Promoting service projects occupies time of council Elected as Student Council officers are Mickey Ross, presidentg Bill Dow, vice-presidentg Mei Hua Lindstrom, secretaryg Karlan Gamble, parlimentariang and fnot shownj, Joe Barela, treasurer. Backing and promoting projects in- troduced by council members and other school organizations occupied much of the time of Student Council. Their first project was selling West Mesa and Mustang decals at the begin- ning of school. Projects that followed included Home- coming, Twirp Week, and the Beauty and Beast contest. In January, Penny Wednesday was started to collect money for nextyear's foreign exchange student. Collections were made on a donation basis with the homeroom which contributed the most receiving a prize. Activities discussed during meetings concerned the closing of the snack bar, the seating of students and press mem- bers during basketball games, sand- ing the patio benches, and many others involved with student welfare. American Field Service International Scholarship is an open door which leads to understanding and friendship among the peoples of the world. The 1970-71 foreign exchange student, Asim Mehmet Atay, was from An- takya, Turkey, a city near the Medi- terraean Sea. He wants to become an engineer. He has various hobbies such as playing the guitar, collecting stamps and coins and listening to all kinds of music. He lived with the family of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter in Corrales, who had children attending WM this year. A Penny Wednesdaya to raise money for future foreign exchange students was carried on second semester.
