Mustang ictory climaxes many Homecoming events In all her beauty Queen Yvonne gracefully accepts a gift from a representative of another city school during the annual Homecoming assembly. Yvonne and Kevin Carey pause fora look at all the 'Beautiful People' before she is escorted to the Mustang throne. 176 Activities We at West Mesa will look at each other on Mustang Day for the true beauty in each ofus. . . This was true on October 16, 1970, when Yvonne Carillo was crowned the 5th Homecoming Queen. The theme was 'Beautiful People' and represented the true beauty of every- one at WM. First Princess Viola Gonzales, Second Princess Jill Phillips, and members of the court were chosen by popular vote to reign beside Queen Yvonne. p The Homecoming Dance was held ' Oct. l7. Music was provided by Judas, i while decorations included posters of people of different races, and black lights. Clutching the ball, Ray Barrs runs down field for another Mustang touchdown. West Mesa defeated the Albuquerque Bulldogs 34-19 for a Homecoming victory. Dreams come true for Yvonne as she is crowned Mustang Queen by Micky Ross and Bill Dow.

With holiday cheer, Steve Burgess and Barbara Nolin get ready for Christmas by decorating a bulletin board in A-building. Mustangs helped decorate various classrooms, halls, and windows for the Christmas Season. December ushers in parties, spirit of giving December is the month of giving. Many Mustangs helped needy families by bringing canned goods to their home rooms for DECA to distribute to poor families of Albuquerque. Seniors ordered their announcements. The first basketball game of the season was played against Farmington. The wrestlers had a fifth period match, and then left for Gallup. Highland Invitational basketball tournaments were held during va- cation. WM placed fourth. The chorus and orchestra presented an evening concert. All-State band try-outs took place at UNM. West Mesa students earning places were Nina Jorden, Debbie Hernandez, Ann Baltz, Mike Gaddis, Gail Olsen, and Jay Mayer. Student Council held a Christmas door decorating contest. Miss Williams, home room class won first place receiving six dollars. 178 Activities Sampling the 'goodies' at a Christmas party given by the Home Economics Dept., are Humanities teacher Mrs. Elma Humphrey and mathematics teacher, Mrs. Sohela Erteza.
