for a West Mesa victory West Mesa's Mustang basketball team got off to a slow start losing their first four games to Farmington, Manzano, Los Alamos and Del Norte. A win over Rio Grande gave them the confidence they needed for the Highland High School Invitational Tour- nament. Going into the tournament, the Mustangs defeated West Las Vegas by a score of 61-58. The last two games were both lost to Los Alamos and Highland. The 1970-71 U of A champions, the AlbuquerquefHigh Bulldogs, conquered the Mustangs, 70-47. Valley got by West Mesa by six points. Manzano's second time round was an unforgettable one losing to the determined Mustangs, 51-50. The encounter with Highland was a heart breaker as the 2 1 Robert Olivias takes an unsuccessful jumper in the WM-A HS game. Mustangs lost by three in the last two minutes of the game. WM sought revenge on Del Norte by a non-suprizing 52- 44 win. ' West Mesa came out 1-2 at the U of A tournament, de- feating Rio Grande and losing to St. Puis and Valley. Mus- tangs placed sixth. The upset of the year almost happened as the Mustangs lost a heart breaker to AHS. WM was leading the Bull- dogs the first three quarters of the game. But the fourth quarter vanished their hopes and they lost, 50-41. Two wins against Valley and Eldorado and a loss against Sandia helped to close the 1970-71 prep season. Games against HHS, SHS and Sante Fe had not been played before the El Chicote deadline. First year player Art Casias proves his ability to play good basketball as he dumps in two points. The Mustangs point man, Mike Baca, makes two of his 16 points during the heated fourth quarter of the WM-Valley game. Sports 145
