fight all the way for MHS Sparked by fine play all sesson, the Mustangs finished with a solid 6-3-1 record. The season began with a convincing 19-8 over the Portales Rams. The next three games saw the Mustangs fall from the win column, with losses to Del Norte and Manzano, and a heart-breaking tie to Rio Grande. At this point, it looked like the grid season would end up in a disaster, but a 22-8 victory in Gallup evened the Mustangsis record to 2-2-1. The homecoming game against AHS was full of surprises. The Mustangs defeated the Bulldogs with the highest point total of the season, making the final score 35-19. Over confidence almost ruined the sea- son in the game against Eldorado, salvaging the game in the fourth quarter the Mustangs finally cor. quered the Eagles 14-6. Going into the Valley game, WM was a heavy underdog but the Mus- tangs were also nearing their peak. Surprising everyone, the griders com- pletely dominated the Vikings, smash- ing them 21-0. The stage was now set for what most people considered the game of the year. Highland Hornets, who needed but one victory to clinch the 2AAAA title faced the improving Mustangs in a contest that left many awed at what WM came close to accomplishing. The Mustangs held the Homets score- less the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter Highlands Dave Powdrell took off on a 62 yd. end sweep. The final score, HHS 6-WM 0. The season final saw the Mustangs demolish hapless Sandia by a score of 29-0.
