curriculum l Horticulture students take time to examine the numerous specimens of plant life in the school greenhouse. usaf offers junior rotc ROTC gave boys insight into the military profession. Air Force history, ceremony, and drills were studied. Cadets toured Shaw Air Force Base in February and attended the military ball on December 12 at Indepen- dence High School. Industrial arts and machine shop offered boys an op- portunity to use a variety of hand and power tools. Weld- ing, metal finishing, and painting procedures were skills taught in auto body and fender repair. Electronics students learned the principles of elec- tricity. An introduction to drafting and design prac- tices, Drafting I, included lettering, pictorial sketching, and geometric construction. Drafting II concentrated on the application of these skills. Organized to give instruction in areas of soil and plant science, agriculture and horticulture courses introduced students to methods of growing trees, shrubs, and flowers. Marching alongside, Captain Alfred McKay calls cadence as ROTC drill team practices on the tennis courts. Flight Commander Mark McKeen gives the order for ROTC cadets to fall in before beginning daily drills. as boys' elective course Industrial arts students Mike Seagel and Jimmy Paxton make use of the electiic sander to complete projects.

Two new courses, housing and boys' home economics, joined family living, fashion merchandising, foods and clothing, and Home Economics I and II as electives. Housing, offered for the first time as a full year course, included interior decorating. Boys' home economics taught skills of cooking and homemaking. Units on nutrition, preparation of meals, home furnishings, and child development prepared family living students for marriage. In fashion merchandising, students learned fashion buying and selling. Foods and clothing class concentrated on preparation of special dishes, etiquette, and sewing. Introductory courses for homemaking, Home Economics I and II emphasized child care, foods and nutrition, and clothing. Art and drama, fine art electives, gave students a chance to express themselves creatively. Art students concentrated on fundamentals of art, theory, and art history. After studying theater history, drama students produced short plays. D. Walker examines W. Elliott's make-up under bright lights in order to assure the desired skin tone for the stage. Donning aprons, members of the boys' home economics class move into kitchens for actual cooking experience. A curriculum Housing student J. Cash employs a scale model as she demonstrates kitchen furniture arrangements to S. Parker. Robin Dorsett and Miss Alexander select garments to be used in a clothing exhibit in the cafeteria display case. n
