curriculum through vigorous sports, students build firm bodies As school opened, sophomores enrolled in a final year of physical education. Juniors and seniors continued in their physical fitness as gym assistants. For girls the fall and Winter program consisted of basketball, tumbling, volleyball, modern dancing, and stunts on the trampoline and balance beam. In the spring they played tennis and softball and ran track. Basketball, football, crab soccer, and volleyball com- posed the boys' winter and fall program. As the weather warmed up, the boys moved outside and concentrated on baseball, track, and golf. Skills provided by these sports offered students a bet- ter outlook toward indoor and outdoor activities. At the same time, students acquired an appreciation for sports- manship and good physical condition. Inside the gym during the winter months, boys compete for possession of the ball in a game of crab soccer. Before dividing into teams for a game of volleyball, Mrs. Kennedy's sixth period physical education students limber up with the jumping-jack-with- a-kick, push-ups, squat thrusts, and various other exercises. Girls relax and enjoy conversation with friends before lining up in squads for roll call and exercises. Anna Walker and Lotchie Donaldson pursue Debbie Summey in an attempt to prevent her from making a goal.

curriculum driver ed course lengthened by half-day classes During the first months of school, sophomores took time from study halls and physical education classes to study North Carolina traffic laws in the driver education course. Due to the half-day schedule during September, the regular six week course was extended to eight weeks. In the classroom, students covered the fundamentals of highway laws and safety. Several films stressed the importance of careful driving. Use of other audio-visual aids enabled perspective drivers to recognize the shapes of various road signs. Road work began with the usual fear of the first escapade behind the wheel. In the eighteen hours required to finish this section of the course, students lost tension and gained confidence. Six of the hours were spent in actual driving conditions while the other twelve consisted of observation and visual study William Qlouse, driver's education instructor, uses opaque projector to As the period ends, driver education cars return to the school ready SCFCSS P01UtS 111 tfafflc Safety- for the next class of drivers.
