Martha Jo Winston Melinda Elizabeth Withrow Ruth Carolyn Wyatt William Marion Young John Williams Zimmerman HONORS f J GORDON COLEY Gordon, at home in a college algebra class or on the football field, does an A- plus job wherever you find him. This is evident in the fact that he was a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship. Gordon was also one of the high school seniors from Mecklenburg Coun- ty to win a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N. C. He did excellent work as president of the Senior Class, and was ranked first in his class of 245 students. JOYCE CLANTON The faculty of West Mecklenburg selected Joyce Clanton as this year ' s Miss Hi iMiss for her outstanding serv- ice to her church, school, and com- munity. Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S. C, invites each Miss Hi Miss to spend a week end on Winthrop College Campus from March 17 to 19. Miss Hi Miss is sponsored by the Winthrop Col- lege student newspaper, the Johnsonian. Some of Joyce ' s achievements include being president of the Senior Hi Fel- lowship at Steel Creek Presbyterian Church, a choir member, and a church librarian. She also serves as State Clerk of the Mecklenburg Presbytery. As Girls ' State Representative, Joyce attended Woman ' s College in Greens- boro, N. C, and was elected chairman of the Nationalist Party, one of the two political parties at Girls ' State. BILL PURSLEY Bill not only serves West Mecklen- burg in an outstanding manner, but also his church and community. He is mod- erator of the Mecklenburg Presbytery Youth Council and a member of his Church Choir. He was president of his sophomore and junior classes and is president of the Student Council at West Mecklenburg this year. As chairman of the South- eastern Area Advisory Council of the Junior Red Cross, he will join the coun- cil in May of this year at Cincinnati for the national convention of the Junior Red Cross. This past fall, he attended a meeting in Washington to help plan senior high Red Cross activities on a na- tional level. In the world of politics. Bill served as the President of the Mecklenburg Coun- ty Teenage Democrats ' Club. He is one of the high school seniors from Mecklenburg County to win the Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship to Duke University, Durham, N. C. Page Thirty
