D.A.R. GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD The Halifax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presents each year the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award to an outstanding senior girl. To be selected for the high honor, one must possess the charac- teristics of leadership, dependability, scholar- ship, and service. Joyce Clanton is this year ' s recipient of this coveted award. The great admiration of the Senior Class for Joyce was shown when they selected her Most Popular Girl. She also serves as Presi- dent of the Beta Club and is a member of the Student Council. As a junior, Joyce was a Junior Marshal and represented West at Girls ' State at Woman ' s College in Greensboro, N. C. AWARDS CIVITAN GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD To a very deserving senior boy goes an honor and a title that fits his outstanding lead- ership and citizenship— that of the year ' s Civi- tan Good Citizenship Award. During all four years of Bill ' s high school career, he has ex- celled in numerous fields. This year, Bill Purs- ley participates as a Junior Rotarian, member of the Senior Safety Club, Boys ' State Repre- sentative, President of the Student Council, and member of both the Beta Club and the Key Club. Bill was also selected by his class- mates as Best All-round Senior Boy.

r FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT KARI EKSET It has been a very special privilege for West to have Kari Margrete Ekset, of Levanger, Norway, here as our representative from the American Field Service. Kari ' s ever-ready smile and warm person- ality have made a very special place for her in the hearts of those who have had the for- tune of knowing her. Active in school affairs, Kari has served as treasurer of the French Club, a member of the Student Council, was sponsored by the Key Club in the Home- coming activities, and has been tapped into the Beta Club. Kari was also interested in the national election this year, and actively par- ticipated by reviewing both candidates dur- ing their Charlotte visits. Kari ' s purpose in America is to bring an understanding of her country, its people, cus- toms, ideals, and beliefs to the people of the United States. She also hopes that she will gain an understanding of the American stu- dents and their principles which she will pass on to her family and friends at home. When she returns to Norway, Kari will have two more years of high school. This year at West, she is taking courses in college alge- bra, physical education, French II, American Flistory, and English. While here in America under the sponsor- ship of American Legion Post 262, Kari ' s home is with Mr. and Mrs. F. W. DeMeritt, Route 4, Douglas Drive, Charlotte, N. C. Page Fourteen
