4» Of PO 1 I f Growth has been the keynote at West for the past ten years, as curriculum and campus expanded to form an even bigger and better school. Our years at West have aided us greatly in our growth toward more mature Christian individuals. Because of the fellowship and friendliness among faculty and students, the varied activities, the interesting classes, the spirit brought from athletic events, and the joys and sorrows shared with our classmates; for these and many other reasons we dedicate this Tenth Anniversary Tomahawk to the school, to every phase of education and to the growth and betterment of West Mecklenburg High School through another ten years. THE PRINCIPAL ' S PAGE West Mecklenburg first opened its doors to students in this school district in September, 1951. Only 325 students were enrolled with a faculty of 20 teachers that first year, quite a few less than the present enrollment of 850 stu- dents and a faculty of 38. This first year found the school without any school policies, without a student council and many other organizations and facilities that we now take for granted. The West campus was without an athletic field, a gym, and was not connected with the many paved walks that now exist. The first students found a limited curriculum. In its second year, the school began to take on a more familiar appearance with the completion of the athletic field, installation of the P.A. system, and addition of paved walks. In 1952, the Student Body adopted a constitution which provided the foundation for the organizing of the Student Council. Our beautiful gymnasium with two classrooms was added in 1954 and with the addition of the nine classrooms in the new wing West could be recog- nized as it is today. The consolidation of the school systems in 1960 has given West today an advanced curriculum with several college preparatory courses. As you can see, the history of West Mecklenburg has been one of steady growth. We are grateful for this school and the lessons it has taught us in the past, for the opportunities of the present, and for the high hopes of a great tomorrow. T. C. WRIGHT
