Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1961 volume:

1 EXIT ■ To record for you your years at West Mecklenburg Senior High is the purpose of the 1961 Tomahawk. Captured within its pages is a little of the spirit of the students, a trace of moods and sentiments, a glimpse of hard study and daily routine, a ray of happiness, and a touch of defeat. Uncaptured in the Tomahawk is the meaning that it holds for each of vou. It is our hope that your experiences of both joy and sorrow will be brought to life as you turn through its pages. The Editor 4 Of PO 1 I f Growth has been the keynote at West for the past ten years, as curriculum and campus expanded to form an even bigger and better school. Our years at West have aided us greatly in our growth toward more mature Christian individuals. Because of the fellowship and friendliness among faculty and students, the varied activities, the interesting classes, the spirit brought from athletic events, and the joys and sorrows shared with our classmates; for these and many other reasons we dedicate this Tenth Anniversary Tomahawk to the school, to every phase of education and to the growth and betterment of West Mecklenburg High School through another ten years. Page Six THE PRINCIPAL ' S PAGE West Mecklenburg first opened its doors to students in this school district in September, 1951. Only 325 students were enrolled with a faculty of 20 teachers that first year, quite a few less than the present enrollment of 850 stu- dents and a faculty of 38. This first year found the school without any school policies, without a student council and many other organizations and facilities that we now take for granted. The West campus was without an athletic field, a gym, and was not connected with the many paved walks that now exist. The first students found a limited curriculum. In its second year, the school began to take on a more familiar appearance with the completion of the athletic field, installation of the P.A. system, and addition of paved walks. In 1952, the Student Body adopted a constitution which provided the foundation for the organizing of the Student Council. Our beautiful gymnasium with two classrooms was added in 1954 and with the addition of the nine classrooms in the new wing West could be recog- nized as it is today. The consolidation of the school systems in 1960 has given West today an advanced curriculum with several college preparatory courses. As you can see, the history of West Mecklenburg has been one of steady growth. We are grateful for this school and the lessons it has taught us in the past, for the opportunities of the present, and for the high hopes of a great tomorrow. T. C. The classes of the year 1960-1961 have memories to share, while ten years of memories have been stored up since the beginning of West Mecklenburg High School. The future beckons too; and as the seniors look forward to a world where books come to life, the sophomores and juniors can look forward to sharing the next years of learning, working, worrying, and laughing together. These are all major aspects of school life. The Senior Class is facing graduation and already high school events are a series of memories. To the juniors they leave the dignity of seniority. Soon, in maroon robes, they will file out of school life and into a world which holds many opportunities. CLASSES r FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT KARI EKSET It has been a very special privilege for West to have Kari Margrete Ekset, of Levanger, Norway, here as our representative from the American Field Service. Kari ' s ever-ready smile and warm person- ality have made a very special place for her in the hearts of those who have had the for- tune of knowing her. Active in school affairs, Kari has served as treasurer of the French Club, a member of the Student Council, was sponsored by the Key Club in the Home- coming activities, and has been tapped into the Beta Club. Kari was also interested in the national election this year, and actively par- ticipated by reviewing both candidates dur- ing their Charlotte visits. Kari ' s purpose in America is to bring an understanding of her country, its people, cus- toms, ideals, and beliefs to the people of the United States. She also hopes that she will gain an understanding of the American stu- dents and their principles which she will pass on to her family and friends at home. When she returns to Norway, Kari will have two more years of high school. This year at West, she is taking courses in college alge- bra, physical education, French II, American Flistory, and English. While here in America under the sponsor- ship of American Legion Post 262, Kari ' s home is with Mr. and Mrs. F. W. DeMeritt, Route 4, Douglas Drive, Charlotte, N. C. Page Fourteen D.A.R. GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD The Halifax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presents each year the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award to an outstanding senior girl. To be selected for the high honor, one must possess the charac- teristics of leadership, dependability, scholar- ship, and service. Joyce Clanton is this year ' s recipient of this coveted award. The great admiration of the Senior Class for Joyce was shown when they selected her Most Popular Girl. She also serves as Presi- dent of the Beta Club and is a member of the Student Council. As a junior, Joyce was a Junior Marshal and represented West at Girls ' State at Woman ' s College in Greensboro, N. C. AWARDS CIVITAN GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD To a very deserving senior boy goes an honor and a title that fits his outstanding lead- ership and citizenship— that of the year ' s Civi- tan Good Citizenship Award. During all four years of Bill ' s high school career, he has ex- celled in numerous fields. This year, Bill Purs- ley participates as a Junior Rotarian, member of the Senior Safety Club, Boys ' State Repre- sentative, President of the Student Council, and member of both the Beta Club and the Key Club. Bill was also selected by his class- mates as Best All-round Senior Boy. ■pi mm SENIOR CLASS Gordon Burnette Coley President Clarence Michael Spain Vice-President Martha Jo Winston Secretary Fabius Avery Mitchell Treasurer Page Sixteen SENIOR CLASS OF 1961 Steve Baldwin and Guen McCracken help to celebrate book week with the suggestions of Mrs. Helen Barr, librarian. This is evident in the fact that he was a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship. Gordon was also one of the high school seniors from Mecklenburg Coun- ty to win a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N. C. He did excellent work as president of the Senior Class, and was ranked first in his class of 245 students. JOYCE CLANTON The faculty of West Mecklenburg selected Joyce Clanton as this year ' s Miss Hi iMiss for her outstanding serv- ice to her church, school, and com- munity. Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S. C, invites each Miss Hi Miss to spend a week end on Winthrop College Campus from March 17 to 19. Miss Hi Miss is sponsored by the Winthrop Col- lege student newspaper, the Johnsonian. Some of Joyce ' s achievements include being president of the Senior Hi Fel- lowship at Steel Creek Presbyterian Church, a choir member, and a church librarian. She also serves as State Clerk of the Mecklenburg Presbytery. As Girls ' State Representative, Joyce attended Woman ' s College in Greens- boro, N. C, and was elected chairman of the Nationalist Party, one of the two political parties at Girls ' State. BILL PURSLEY Bill not only serves West Mecklen- burg in an outstanding manner, but also his church and community. He is mod- erator of the Mecklenburg Presbytery Youth Council and a member of his Church Choir. He was president of his sophomore and junior classes and is president of the Student Council at West Mecklenburg this year. As chairman of the South- eastern Area Advisory Council of the Junior Red Cross, he will join the coun- cil in May of this year at Cincinnati for the national convention of the Junior Red Cross. This past fall, he attended a meeting in Washington to help plan senior high Red Cross activities on a na- tional level. In the world of politics. Bill served as the President of the Mecklenburg Coun- ty Teenage Democrats ' Club. He is one of the high school seniors from Mecklenburg County to win the Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship to Duke University, Durham, N. C. Page Thirty Teresa Roberts MR. AND MIS Selecting a Mr. and Miss West High is indeed a task with so many qualifying, but when the students ' opinion was recorded in the final ballot, Teresa Roberts and Gordon Coley were chosen for their versatility. As Miss West High, Teresa certainly deserves the medal for her hardworking and undying enthusiasm which helps maintain much of our school spirit. She serves well this year as Editor of the Tomahawk, member of the Beta Club, and as a cheerleader. She was also a runner-up both for Home- coming Queen and Senior Beauty. Gordon Coley : WEST HIGH Mr. West High, Gordon, serves the school in a different capacity. His light shines brightest from his scholastic abili- ties, but this does not mean that he did not play a good game of football. Service to his fellow students includes being President of the Senior Class, President of the Science Club and a member of the Beta Club and Key Club. All of their activities and their personalities made their fellow students give them this honor which is most coveted by all Seniors. We give the warmth of friendship to one an- other and thus encourage growth to maturity. There are organizations for every purpose and person in our school. Em- phasis varies from scholarship to entertainment and fun. Students frequently find themselves in several groups at one time. Encouragement is given to the students ' participation in school organiza- tions, hoping that these activities will provide the student with social training for his future life. The Bow and Arrow strives to g ive an accurate and complete coverage of the news at West Mecklenburg. Because of the hard work of the journalism class in selling advertisements, West will have letter press paper this year. The newspaper has progressed from mimeo- graphed to offset, and now to letter press, which is the type paper that most of the Mecklenburg schools have. Six issues of the paper are planned for this year. The Bow and Arrow staff is composed of Eugene Oli- ver, Hoke Smith, Sandra Green, Nancy Mobley, Reba Pressley, Judy Justice, Peggy Dean, Charlie Barnette, Jerry Mitchell, Gloria Sanders, Gene Whisnant, Linda Stegall, Gloria Deaton, and Bobbie Baker, and is under the direction of Mrs. Harriet Ross. Page Fifty-four ... — : — r — 1 _ , r BOYS ' STATE Each summer four outstanding ris- ing seniors are selected from each high school by the American Legion to attend the University of North Carolina for one week to study state government. These boys should pos- sess such outstanding traits as ability in leadership, intelligence, depend- ability, honesty, and integrity. The representatives from West Mecklenburg this year were as fol- lows: Gordon Coley, Mike Spain, Bub Mitchell, and Bill Pursley. GIRLS ' STATE Each year the faculty and Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary representatives choose outstanding girls from the Junior Class to attend the Tar Heel Girls ' State on the campus of Wo- man ' s College, Greensboro, N. C. These girls met with 313 other North Carolinians for one week in June. They organized their own city and county governments and elected their officials. Delegates to Girls ' State were Nancy Hargett, Joyce Clanton, Pam McCall, and Candy Keener. JUNIOR ROTARIANS The Junior Rotarians are chosen to represent West Mecklenburg at the monthly luncheon meetings of the Rotary Clubs of Charlotte. Represen- tatives are picked on the basis of their scholarship, honesty, and integrity. Each of these young men attends the meetings one day each week for one month and hears interesting speakers, sees films, and meets many of the distinguished businessmen of Char- lotte. The purpose of these meetings is to acquaint the young leaders of today with the demands of the busi- ness world, which they will be a part of tomorrow. Teach us how to play the game. Only in a sporting vein. Endow us with the will to win, With a spirit striving from within. And, Coach, teach us as we live and learn To expect only what we rightly earn. Quitting never; though discouraged, be Ever true to self, to team, to Thee. Keep us clean in speech and thought, In doing, and in living as we ought. Of ha te and envy keep us free, For more deserving man than we. Prepare us now in friendly strife On the playing field of life. And someday, Master, Coach Supreme, Let us play on your great team. Author Unknown. . . . ATHLETICS mm Jimmy Hyder Nick Abernathy Jimmy McAnulty Assistant Coach Lavon Laye Billy Payne James Dagenhart Eddie Truette BASEBALL 1961 Head Coach Carl Bolick and Assistant Coach Lavon Laye, coaching the West Mecklenburg baseball team, again piloted it to the State 4-A Baseball Finals, played in Charlotte, N. C. Combining good hitting, defense, hustle, and desire, West played its first year in the highly competitive Western 4-A Conference, compiled a 10-4 record and the championship. Advancing into the State playoffs, the team, urged on by a spirited student body, slipped by Wilson High School, Wilson, N. C, thereby gaining a berth in the finals. Playing the State championship game against Greens- boro, N. C, West fell behind and staged a final inning rally, only to have it fall short and see the coveted crown slip from their grasps. Even in losing, the team and student body showed their good sportsmanship and gained the respect of all for their out- standing spirit. Page Seventy-one Eddie Dickerson Ronnie Sadler Billy Reavis Robert Costner Herb Baker Jimmy Barnette FOOT Long before the student body returned for another year of study, the West football gridders were under- going intensive training in preparation for a rough ten game schedule. This year was very much different as the squad was faced with the difficult task of be- coming acquainted with the type of training of our head football coach, Mr. Frank Maennle, from Andrews High, Andrews, North Carolina, and also of making the transition from the single wing to the split T formation. After many days of hard work, they were prepared to tackle the tough schedule that was before them. The Indians did not win the Conference Cham- pionship, but they still managed to have a successful season. Every year it seems that, while the Indians do not have the size of some of the other teams in the conference, they have more than enough spirit to meet DONNY LEMMOND George Johnson Frank Vogt Butch Jones r m Henry Sadler Jimmy Pettus Billy Ellis Gordon Coley BALL the obstacles put before them. Hard work and the will to win made the team one we were proud to call our own. In order to field a football team, it is necessary to have a staff of coaches who have the knowledge of their field and the wisdom to adjust this knowledge to the potential of available men. During his first season at West, Coach Maennle has demonstrated his knowl- edge through the coaching of the team. The new system that Maennle installed at West, once Mecklenburg County ' s only single wing club, is not strictly T . It ' s a wide open brand of football, with a single wing line and a T backfield. Helping Coach Maennle are three capable assistants: Carl Bo- lick, line coach; Lavon Lave, back coach; and Bonald Patterson, Junior Varsity coach. Coach Frank Maennle Assistant Coaches Carl Bolick, Lavon Laye, and Ronald Patterson Jerry Kirkman Bill Young Mike Spain Jimmy Hyder BASKETBALL ' 60 — ' 61 Kent Moseley, Varsity Coach VARSITY Tommy Lacy Tim Harris Mike Mullis Donny Lemmond After losing most of the height of the 1959-60 team, the 1960-61 basketball team developed into a hustling aggressive unit. Using, for the most part, an effective zone press and a devastating fast break, the team became a scrapping quintet displaying a brand of ball never before seen at the school. While a rough schedule was faced, all were enthusi- astic about the fine showing and looked for- ward to the western 4-A tournament held at the end of the season in Charlotte Park Center. The Junior Varsity team worked hard to prepare themselves for future varsity compe- tition and in doing so have caused a great deal of interest to be shown in their play. Most of the boys on the team are sophomores; how- ever, they show a great deal of finesse and poise and are certain to produce a fine future team. Our J. V. Much of the credit for this interest must be given to Mr. Ronald Patterson, the hard-working track coach. Since coming to West four years ago, Pat has developed track and cross- country into successful sports. The West Cindermen participate in a rugged con- ference and are respected by their opponents. Starting in early spring, the team works steadily toward the Charlotte Queen City Relays and the State Meet at Raleigh, N. C. Heading this eager group is Dudney Jarnigan, one of our best track men. Coach Ronald Patterson Dudney Jarnigan GIRLS ' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The purpose of the Girls ' Athletic As- sociation is to sponsor and promote a pro- gram of athletics that will be interesting, stimulating, and suitable for the high school girl; to promote competition that stresses enjoyment of a sport and the de- velopment of sportsmanship and char- acter; and to encourage leadership through student management. They made us happy, they made us cheer, they made us boost the feelings of our team. Their contributions are not to be taken lightly because they added that certain spark which made us really enjoy the competition with our fellow school teams. Many times during the year the cheerleaders don their uniforms to support the Indians and to lead the cheering of the fans. Their work is hard and sometimes unrewarded, but they continue to give it their best and to keep up the school spirit. Where can you find such tal- ented youngsters? That ' s easy: there are thousands of them in the Junior Achievement movement. They ' re doing all these things . . . learning the American way of doing busi- ness . . . seeing for themselves that free enterprise pays off self-reliance with profit, prog- ress and freedom. Junior Achievement is spon- sored by many of America ' s businesses, including the most famous corporations, to give enthusiastic youngsters prac- tical training in business and citizenship. Volunteer advis- ors from all fields of business guide them and their junior corporations towards success and profit. The kids get busi- ness experience and under- standing that will be mighty valuable when they ' re on their own. And they have a lot of fun, too, seeing their pastime pay off in cash! Most important of all, Junior Achievement helps young people think for themselves. It helps develop responsible, young citizens who will be America ' s biggest asset some day.
