POEM MEMORIES VVhile traveling down lifes long, rough road, For one short moment, our feet are slowed. flow did we eome this far so soon? Will we really graduate, come june? Seems yesterday we trudged this way YVith fear in our hearts for our first school day. Each day we found sehool all but a pleasure, Then, unaware of memories we'd treasure. Oh, why does time so quickly fly? Twelve years have swiftly glided hy. Like magic they did seem to go, The happiest years we will ever know: The eareffree years when life was gay, llaeh year was filled with work and play. The pleasures for a child half-grown, Oh, why have they so quickly flown? ln future years, when things look hlue, Dear Qle VVest I ligh, xve'll think of you. Although our hearts with eare may fill, Our thoughts of you luring happiness still. MOTTO life can do all things tlzrmaglz Christ wlziclz strengtlzertetlt us. COLORS rl lnroou and ll'l1ite FLOWERS llflzite Rose CLASS HISTORY On September 4, 1951, sophomores from Berryhi11, Paw Creek and Thomasboro joined together as one unit of 1earning at West 1V1eck1enburg. Now, as we, the C1ass of 1954, stro11 a1ong the hallways of o1d VVest High, we 1ook back and remember our high schoo1 days, thinking with deep gratitude of those advisers, 1eaders, and parents who have he1ped us in so many ways. VVe came as sophoinorees and were destined to be the first c1ass to gradu- ate after having attended three enjoyab1e years at Wfest. VVe 1earned with- out too much dif1icu1ty to work together as one group, and this unity set us on the right path immediate1y. As Juniors, our greatest accomp1ishment was a very successfu1 Iunior- Senior Banquet. Other achievements during this year were the winning of the sportsmanship award in baskctba11 and becoming an accredited high schoo1. Yes, we became a member of the Southern Association of Secondary Schoo1s and Co11eges. When the second c1ass from VVest 11igh graduated, we were next in 1ine to be 'iSeniorsy'1 VVe, 1ike so many c1asses, were thri11ed and excited by our 1ast year. To 1ead our c1ass this 1ast year, we e1ected oihcers who we thought vvou1d be most worthy for this task. As president, we e1ected none other than Danny 11argett. Next, we chose the staff for our annua1, THE TOMAHAWK. Again, with much thought and consideration, we chose per- sons vvho would make our yearbook the best yet. B1air Norris was chosen to edit our book. During our senior year, VVest Highs first homecoming be- came history. This was certain1y a 1H6lHOl'i1131C occasion, and we seniors are 1ooking forward to future homecomings. Yes, we 1ook back over these schoo1 days and ponder them in our hearts. VVe know without a doubt that our Graduation Day is not an ending, but 1nere1y a beginning to something far better. As a guide throughout the rest of our 1ives, vve sha11 remember our motto- We can 010 all things through Christ, which strengtherneth us. LURETTA BENNETT, H istorimfz Page Eighty-five HTHE BIG STORY Today, June 1, 1964, we got a 1-9-5-4 from Chief Emory Elliotte of the Rack-it Squad, our assignment: to get the facts, the facts of the whereabouts of the 1954 Senior Glass. The following is our report: At 9:05 we pick up a man. Your name, Sir? ulohn 'The Rat' Lowefl Your oceupation?,' Stool pigeonfl Living up to his job, he begins to squeal. Melva Greene and Robert Graham have now combined their talents making the l'Greene Graham Grackersm containing Ghlorophyll, further developed by Franklin Kennerly and Nancy Stephens. Terry Lindsay has taken over a chain of Drive-ln Theaters with Robert Faulkenburg and Shirley Floyd as assistants. Vaudry Williams is still bagging groceries for Kenneth Wherry, owner of Wherry's Super Market. Wayne Whiteside and his associates, Eloise Gosnell and Francis Bryant, have developed a new process of converting Ford Tractors into Ghevrolets. Reid Wingate and Gary Jones own their own hillbilly radio show with 1'Sunshine Suel' Gorrell singing and Donald Sutton announcing. 'iAre these really the facts, the true facts, we just want to get the factsf' Honest, these are the facts, all the facts 1 knowf, Okay, you can gof, As we arnble on down the street, we pass the Helms and Adams Radio and T. V. Repair Shop, owned by Myron Helms and Bobby Adams, with Marion llelms as their ever efficient secretary. At 10:08 it happened, we saw her standing on the corner. Your name, please? we inquired. Little Red Biggerstafffl Your destinationf, 'fGrandma Saunderls Grill, owned by Margie Saundersfl Mind if we tag along, ma'am, we're after some facts, malain, just some factsf' Walking down the sidewalk we pass a Naval Recruiting Office, where Admiral Bill Swing and Ensign Bill Freeman are drilling some new recruits. Although their heads are shaved as slick as a cue ball, we recognize them as being Fritz Trull, Olen Belk, Alfred Foard, and Grady Barnes. As we meander on down the street, we pass Teddy Ruth Burrell's Reducing Parlor. We peep through the window and see Garolyn McGee, Nell Chalmers, and Naomi Auten exercising feverishly. Finally we reach Grandma's Grill, and recognize the head waitress, Barbara Mundy. We sit down to eat. We notice some familiar number work by Joe Dale Mitchell on a calendar. The number work is unmistakable, it's the figure of Doris Gloninger, now replacing Marilyn Monroe on all the calendars. As we are sitting there eating, in walked two wrestlers. We recognize them as Rowdie Richard Rumple and Roger The Terror Tadlock. We eat and get up to leave. Who should walk in the door but llarold Boone and Pat Denson, Mr. and Mrs. Physique of 1964. We start on down the street to get more facts. As we pass the Williams, VVi1liams, and W'illia1ns Shoe Store, owned by Gene, Paul, and Shirley Williams, we see a suspicious looking man, whom we recognize as Baby Face Barefoot. The only in- formation we get from him is that Phyllis Whitley now weighs 350 pounds and is selling tickets at Bill Boyd's Wild West Show. HBaby Facev says she might squeal. At 1:03 we arrive at the ticket office. We see Slim Phyl, who begins talking. She tells us that Nancy Sheets, Dot Springs, Laura Underwood, and Nancy Wilson are work- .ing in the show as the nation's only female Bronc Busters. We go to the back of the arena and question Laura Underwood. She spills that Ieanette VV'arner is working for VVarner Bros. Pictures in Hoskins. Sonny Reynolds is directing a new movie there Page Eighty-six with Janice llartlcy, Pansy Rayburn, Dorothy Taylor, 'lihomas llarlee, and Elmer Jenkins in the leading roles. Dwight Saine has opened a used ear lot. Clarence Saunders and Bill Foster are his head mechanics, and Frank Keistler and Layton Hoyis are his best salesmen. Laura tips us off that her boy friend, William Barley, who owns Barley's CofPilot Night Club, a respectable restaurant, down near the banks of Paw Creek, may give us some info. Wfe catch a taxi, and who should be driving but Dennis Cathey. As we pass Charles Freemanls Bicyle Repair Shop, we see William Eppes working feverishly to repair Arvard Nayey,s bicycle. As we ride along, Dennis tells us that Ben Blankership has discovered a new theory of evolution. About this time we pass Mulberry Manor where the mayor of lWulberry, Kenneth Summerville, lives. Out in his yard, Harold Chandler is polishing Kenneth's new Cadillac, which is chauffeured by James Helms. Also in his yard is Lorraine, the Gardner. At 3:06 we arrive at Barleyls Co-Pilot Night Club. We go in. we see Dot Clark at the piano with songstress Johnnie Lee Gladden, singing a song from the Musical 'fhlurder at Midnight, written by Martha Johnston, Betty Kiser, and Tommy Sig- mon. We recognize, sitting over in the corner, several players of the Berryhill Bruisers pro football team: Jim Thompson, Johnny Welch, Floyd Stewart, Gil hlillsaps, and their coach, Blair Norris. We eye the pro players, they eye the stage. Coming in are the chorus girls, Nadine Primm, Julia Elliott, Elizabeth Choate, Dale Atkins, and hlary Derrick. As we glance about the room, we notice several famous celebrities: Danny Hargett, Tootsie Pop King of 1964, handsome singing star of T.V. and Radio, Ralph Forbis, and the movie star of Low Midnightf, Gary Cooper. Over in a dark corner we see Percy The Crook, who is now going straight, sitting with Adrienne Southerland and his favorite Parole Officer, Joseph Gilliland. Then Ralph Preslar, chief Bouncer, tips us that Barley will now see us in his office. As we enter the office, we recognize three of his cigarette girls, Linda Dunn, Loretta Bennett, and Shirley McCarter, waiting outside. Barley begins his list of factsfJean Helms and Jo Ann Helms, owners of H 8: H Button Hole Mfg. Co., due to financial difficulties, are going in the hole, and are seeking assistance from the multi-millionaire Jon Lassiter and his fiance, Ann Gillis. Shirley Keistler is now president of Keistler's Garage, and Carole Cline is part owner in Cline's Esso Station. Margie Zack, hiary Ann Outen, and John Kelly are writing comic strips for Looney Tunes. Shirley Bridges Smith, Joan Burgess, Shirley Brown, and Shirley Overstreet Helms arc man- aging Leon Allman's Day Nursery. Brownie Grier and Joan Hovis, owners of their new funeral home, have perfected their lay-away plan. Their undertakers, Larkey Brown and Robert Alexander, are the last friends to let you down. Ronald Medlin and Bill Stevenson, jet jockeys of 1964, are now testing jets for the Hudson Co., owned by Frances Hudson. Gail Cox is selling the new candy bar 'iOrr Henryf' manufactured by Bobbie Orr and Joanne Henry. Gorgeous Gordon, with his manager, Robert Hil- ton, is planning to enter the weight lifting division of the 1964 Olympics. Jerry Faulkner, Donald Price, and Larrv Wilkinson are holding a revival on the camp grounds of Deacon Barry Choate. Singing in the choir are Susie Abernathy, Peggy Doby, Nancy Orndoff, Elaine Rawlins, and Nancy Thomas, accompanied by Evelyn Bailey at the piano. Benita Holder has just released her latest recording i'Dear John. Ronald Ledford is pitching for the Charlotte Crackers, a crummy baseball club, owned bv Grey Hendricks and Shirley 1Vlontgomery. Richard UThe Jarring Jeepl' McQuayiis captain of the Queens College football team. The team stars Nancy Eckard at left tackle, Frances Robinson at end, and Joan Puckett at center. Joe Martin is scheduled to graduate from West Ili this year. M. W. Grass and Jimmy Johnston are drivers for the Adams and Aycoth Bus Line, owned by Carolyn Adams and Vivian Aycoth. Nancy Jones has solved the problems of tooth decay by pulling all of her teeth. Jane Cathey is operating a show boat on Moorels Park Lake with Jeanette Tench as her main drawing card. As we leave, we thank Barley for his tips. We arrive at the station at 6:01.
