They learn not only about governmental procedures, stu- dent fnances, and apathyg but also, they get an idea of how better communications and understanding will be impor- tant in solving todayls prob- lems. Peter Kincart Dick Cullison expresses complete amazement. . . Debbie Lohman listens attentively. . . Mr. Gettel, advisor, explains the new budget. Scott Thomason sits t o n g u e-in- cheek . . . While secretary Holly takes it all lin with a smile. Vice-president Peter Kincart addresses Student Coun- cilfrom the podium. I nterclub Council Coordination, evaluation, cooperation: three important words when InterClub Council comes to mind. ICC is responsible for coordinating the activities of all clubs and scheduling all dances. ICC evaluates the bands that play here and keeps a comprehensive record, made to be used by other schools in our area. The activity director, a new Student Body office, becomes president of ICC. This brought about one very important improvement, a high degree of cooperation with Student Council. I President of I.C.C., Paul Boettcher Kaleidoscope Members of ICC, the club presidents, attend a meeting. Combining talent into a true ' kaleidoscope of colorful thoughts that are cons- tantly searching, changing, and growing is the purpose of Ka- leidoscope. Ka- leidoscope is West Linn's an- nual literary ma- gazine. It is com- posed of original poems, essays, stories and art- work. This year's Sirs found themselves left with money problems that had never been solved the year be- fore. They still man- aged to get into the Christmas spirit, though, by donating two baskets of food for the needy families ofthe community. Selling concessions at ga m es was another Sirs' project. Hopeful- ly, the Sirs will con- tinue to earn money and help those who need help. S irs , 4 1 Officers: Paul Boettcher, Pat Boettcher, and Joe Walsh. Row I: S. Smith, P. Boettcher, P. Boettcher, K. If you can imagine all that, you can imagine the Debutants. The Debs are the hard-working, high-kicking girls who devote their time and energy to representing West Linn. There are less than two dozen girls this year, but all have worked hard to pre- serve the Debs. Of course, participating in Debs meant you had demonstrated your ability and versatility. Then, put them into good use by dancing in the an- nual May Day dance, and by partici- pating in the many activities that make afull-fledged Debutant. 27 bs lu. l C Row 1: K. In March they put out the Hrst Thespian production of the year, You Can't Take It With You. Then were the annual one-act plays, in which each Class won an award. Sophomores re- ceived the award for the best play, Servants ofthe People. We lost seven games compared to only one win and one tie, but season records need not tell the entire story. lt was a year when words like spirit, deter- mination, and particular- ly courage were a part ofour vocabulary. Tw'o outstanding games were those against Dallas and Oregon City. West Linn repeatedly threatened the lzigh- rankea' Dallas team at their goal line but the final score read 20-6 in favor of' the Dragons. The expressions of the boys are vivid, their glistening bodies, tight with the momentum to win. Long, strenuous practices help to keep the wrestlers in shape for matches, but inevitably a couple boys have to do without food for a day or two before weigh-ins to make the right weight. It starts out small in its early stages but grows quickly upward toward its peak. Suddenly it blooms and comes truly alive with color and life. May Day isn't just the first day of May, but starts weeks before with long hours of hard work, all building toward the climax. The splendor and color of West Linn's blossom takes full form as the carefully planned routines are presented before the queen and her court. The traditional acts were all there: the Maypole, the square dancers, the gymnastics, the Debs, and the choir all took part again. Two new dances were presented by a group of West Linn's own daisies and the court also added a presentation of their own to the performance. And as in any headquarters, there is never a moment's rest. All day long the switchboard buzzes, phones ring, visitors traipse in and out, typewriters clack. Mr. Wyffel's visiting bench is occupied, a student waits for a band-aid, Mrs. McLarty helps someone at the window, Mr. Gettel has a line of students waiting at his door. These are on the outside, where anybody can see. But miles of work go unpraised, unnoticed, but get done. There are minuscule and monolithic tasks, schedules, and paper-work lying underneath all that is done. Lots of people like to complain and beg for changes-and maybe someday the changes will come with the inefficiency of computers replacing the inefficiency of all the diferent people who make an omce work. But they've got to be good for something, or they wouldn't be around. If you were to stop and think about it, a teacher has a million duties: advising, counselling, patrolling, ticket-taking, chaperoning, door-guarding and just plain teaching. Teachers are human beings, especially when you realize that they have also found time to raise fam- ilies, participate in community affairs, and maintain their private hobbies . . . after they get out of school. Teachers spend over a thousand hours a year 'just plain teachingn. That d0esn't include all the after-school hours and the paper-correcting. Teaching is not always a rewarding job . . . but there's something we must not know about, or why would the teachers still be teaching? Kids always love to gripe about how much good time they waste by going to school, but think about this: long after you're out ofhigh school, the teachers will still be here. Our major goal this past year was to try and get students more involved in the school and what it has to offer. To some extent we have failed to reach our goal . . . With this thought in mind we hope that the coming changes within our school will give the students the incentive to unite, strive, and reach their future goals. We hope that whatever little accom- plishments we have gained will in some way help the students in the fu- ture. To the Students of W.L.H.S. we extend our thanks and gratitude for their cooperation and support. It dawned slow- ly on most that this was their last year of high school yet the class seemed to come alive with accelerated activity that will leave their hnal impression on West Linn. Sports, rally, May court, plays, graduation, all were activities that had a special meaning for the many Seniors in- volved. Activity was not limited to the school, however, and many individuals earned out- standing honors and recognition on state and national levels. Let us remember, though, the entire class and the achievements it made in education and growth. This year's class is particularly aware of the many crises in pollution, poverty, Vietnam, ana' international conflict that face their genera- tion. They will step from high school to local involvement with a vote and a voice, a right to be heard. Upper leh: Tom Hood, Jill Cross, Jerry Baunach and Eric Munson, Seniors. Reflections Fifteen years ago, West Linn was a small su- burban high school of approximately 450 students. As years advanced, enrollment increased until we reached approximately 1,200 students, which in- cluded all of the Gladstone students. The only building we had was the old building, with the old gym. In 1956 the new addition was opened, which gave us a new gym, and provided us with eight new classrooms and office space, the old gym was re- modeled for wood shop purposes. Today, as every- one knows, we have a new library, new home eco- nomics and art departments, new shops, and many additional classrooms. In reflecting upon curriculum, the basic of- ferings were for the most part college preparatory offerings. Today, West Linn ojjfers over 150 dif- ferent subjects, with elective options in English, mathematics and science, and a very fine vocational program. Athletically, we started with only varsity com- petition. This has grown now to include junior var- sity and a double freshman program. We have also added gymnastics, skiing, gom girls' swimming, and girls' track, which makes a fairly comprehensive athletic program. Fifteen years ago, the student body followed pretty much the program or the direction of the teachers and the administration, but now they are involved in Parent-Student-Teacher Committees, they are involved in helping shape their own des- tinies, and becoming truly involved in an educa- tional program. These and many others are the reflections and memories of the principal. -Charles P. Zacur Mr. Shearer, a counsellor, and Mrs. Lightowler, an algebra teacher, have also spent their last year at West Linn. They will retire after giving many years of sen- vice to the high school and its students. M22sff5Vf x 1W W ,'fT,LfbL ' 'CIT L ww M my Nfffg pf U Q f ..., I V L , -- If LL L LL I L W A .
