Spirit is the feeling that you are a part'of the school. lt is the willingness to become involved in school activities. Underclassmen trying vainly to beat the seniors in a competition yell, an understanding teacher sharing laughter with a student, a teacher guiding, instructing, and inspiring a young pupil: a skit which brings laughter to a pep assembly, participation in the school band, a reflective moment to think about the future--these are all examples of the type of spirit that unites West Linn High School. This is the spirit that the Green and Gold has sought to capture and present to you. l x W Above: Bonnie and Patti look over some candids. Right: Sally checks a print order. We have di,vided the representatives' terms into semesters with the purpose of involving more students, stated Student Body President Eddie Dierickx. The Executive Council, through its own spirit and participation, has promoted class competition in the Trash Clash, Student Council, the clothing drive: and the WI-OC rivalry. They also initiated the Class of the Month and the Class of the Year. The spirit and participation exhibited by the Executive Council spread through the entire school. Executive Council, we thank you for a great year! ce T9 Treasurer Leslie Wievesiek PfeS'de ' Eddm Dlermkx SHA HARUDIN A student who comes from the Far East, who is familiar with the four malignant scourges of mankind--poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy, finds America to be the most attractive place to seek refuge. But a student from Nlalaysia, whose country is young, who aspires freedom and alle- viation from these misfortunes finds America a source of hope and aspiration. This is evident at West Linn. Though most of you are un- aware of the blessed fortunes, you exhibit the beauty of freedom and the value of liberty. In addition, West Linn seems, since the day I arrived, to approve of me as one of her students. I can never forget the bursting cheers accorded to me by the Student Body. What is more cher- ishable is the warmth and friendliness of the students toward me. Foreign, but unforgettable to me, is the brimm- ing spirit the students display during the football games. Football, pep assemblies, and homecoming dances are a few of the images that are etched in my memory of West Linn. l'm proud to have West Linn as my American Alma Mater. I will find it to be most painful to depart from West Linn when the school year ends, but as the saying goes: some may come and some may go. l may go but I take with me pleasant memories of my stay in West Linn. --Shahurudin BIN MOHAMED 0F MAl.AYSlA It is well worth one's while to go io a country which can teach us the beauty of the word F R EEDOM and the value of the thing LIBE RTY --Oscar Wilde Din's family, left to right: Mr. Mohamed, Zulkifly, Mrs. Mohamed. The 1967 Football Homecoming was a day of splendor, spirit, and joy! Affairs began with the pep assembly. Cheers and applause rose at the presentation of the Royal Court. That evening the spirit ran high as the gold clad Lions drowned the Dragons 32 to 7. Following our victory came the heart pounding sounds of the Ouints. The glimmer of stars, the wave of excitement, led the dance to the end of a truly SPLENDOUR D' AUTOMNE! 24 Coach Martin C0-:ich MaCk9Y Congratulations are in order for an out- standing performance by WLHS swim team this year. WINTER Y 3 Wi THE SKIN Of OUR TEETH' BY THORTON WIIDER Enjoy yourselvesl Here is a comedy about George An- trobus, his vvife and two children, and their general utility maid, Lily Sabina, all of Excelsior, New Jersey. George Antrobus is John Doe, or Joe Smooe, or you or me---the average American at grips with des- tiny, sometimes sour, sometimes sweet. The Antrobuses have sur- vived fire, flood, and famine, a doz- en wars, and as many depressions. They run many a gamut, and are as durable as radiators. Alternately be- witched, befuddled, and becalmed, and they are the stuff of which heroes are made---heroes and buf- foons. They are the true offspring of Adam and Eve, victims of all the ills that flesh is heir to. They have survived a thousand calamities by the skin of their teeth. This play isa tribute to their indestructability. 30 But who can tell your past, eh? Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. l'm waiting, George. . . Al'll'lOLll lC6l' ..... The Lions opened their season by wrestling North Eugene. West Linn just wasn't quite ready to handle North Eugene and was overtaken slightly, 27-20. The Crook County Tournament found Crook County on top, Crater in second, Gresham in third, and West Linn in fourth place. Our next match was with Oregon City and the Lions successfully dumped O.C., 31-24. The O.C. match started a three-match winning streak until Tigard broke our record by a 43-8 win over the Lions. Four more matches in a row were handed to the Lions and this time it took Tillamook to set the Lions back on their heels, 33-17. West Linn repeated its performances against Oregon City by delivering them another defeat, this time 27-18. Newberg dropped West Linn 32-15 to finish the regular season. West Linn played host to the invitational meet which saw Gresham take first, Milwaukie, second, West Linn, third, and in fourth place was Oregon City. Slogans, posters, speeches, anticipation for the outcome--the entire student body awaited anxiously the announcement of their new leaders. BASEBALL R0l.l.S INTO SPRING The Lion baseball season had its ups and downs in 1968. The West Linn nine played some fine baseball against their across-the-river rivals, winning the first game 1-O and losing the second game 2-0, even though Larry Parsons struck-out ten Oregon City batters and only gave them two hits. West Linn forced Lake Oswego into extra innings before they were defeated 4-3. Too many men left on base posed the most problems for the Lion ball team. Against Tigard and Lake Oswego, fifteen and twelve West Linn players were left stranded on base. The pitching chores were handled by seniors Larry Parsons, Ed Dierickx, and Tom Mahar. Top batters included Bob Moravec, Roger Fetz, Larry Parsons, and Ed Dierickx, all three-year lettermen. Sophomores Arba Mushlitz and Scott Smith filled in as catcher and shortstop. Lon Cardiff, Rick Rollins, Fred Lenzer, and Gregg Robinson finished out the Lion line-up. West Linn statistician Sharon Fisher was assisted by freshman Kathie Steele. Sharon also was TYV League Statistician. The Lions are coached by Bill Lee. 53 ?i on third? Ro ger Fetz running out a rap. BASEBALL FEVER What game is this we're playing? Our team, only two years old, has al- ready shown that it has this determina- tion. Although they have won no team victor- ies, many individuals have brought recog- nition to West Linn. Sue Williams, a Senior, holds the State javelin record of 127 feet. Upcoming champions are Deb- bie Stanley, Sophomore, who's long legs helped her capture fourth at District in running the 440 in 62.7 seconds. Junior, Janis Brady, took first at District in the Broad Jump with a 16'2 record. Her victory enables her to go on to state. Two assets that can't be overlooked are coaches, Mrs. Grunst and Mrs. Mackey. Without their efforts and time, this new addition to our sports would never be. West Linn can be sure that much will be heard from this team in years to come. Team from left to right: D. Burnum, J. Brady, B. Giegly, A. Kennerly, L. Oldenstadt S Ray C Brainard. Second row: K. Green During the sophomore year, the canine teeth of the young lions became well developed, and they began to hunt their own prey. It is most intriguing to observe how from their blundering and uncertain start as freshmen, the young lions gradually grew in efficiency until they obtained their quarry with the same skill as old and pronounced hunters. The sophomores sponsored the successful football homecoming dance and won the bagrush. Their spirit and enthusiasm also added to the West Linn victory over Oregon City in the annual football civil war rivalry. The sophomores' sign reading, WL SOPHS say BEAT OC was hung over the OC elevator much to the dismay of OC fans. Next year as juniors, the class of 1970 is sure to carry on in true West Linn spirit. - .. - . y ,jf' 54 ' ' .I 353331-..,- 1 ef? L 4 -' l K r ' -lx K A ' ' 1 F ff wwf? 'T' Q. ffff. SOPHOMORES: two down and two to go!!! E. Wolf ii 1 f , Q y A M. Zacher Like LION cubs, the freshman experienced a world of new activities and situations at West Linn. The first challenge, the bagrush, was lost and conse- quently the freshman were in- itiated as all lion cubs should be. New circumstances were constantly on hand for the freshman to encounter includ- ing class, athletic, and scholas- tic competition. As the year progressed, the freshman cubs gradually adjusted to the life of a LION at West Linn High. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the treshold of your own mind. The astronomer may speak to you of his un- derstanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding. The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrest the rhythm nor the voice that echoes it. And he who is versed in the science of numbers can tell of the regions of wight and measure, but he cannot conduct you thither. For the vision of one man lends not its wings to anotherman. -from THE PROPHET if eff K SCHOOL BDARD, FACUITY Nlr.
