' Foreword Each year the graduating class of West Linn High School puts out what it believes to be the best annual of all. Although We were handicapped by the war in many of our activities, we feel the spirit of West Linn High has remained undaunted. It is our belief that students, faculty, and our alumni in the service have shown great loyalty and courage. We hope that in future years, as we look back, this annual will still be a reminder of the true West Linn High School spirit. Dedication This Annual is respectfully dedicated to our Superintendent and Principal, Iohn L. Gary. Iohn L. Gary, retiring principal of West Linn High School, affectionately referred to by the students as King Iohn, is a man who has rendered excellent service to our school for the past twenty-five years. During this time he has given un- sparingly of his time in the interest of the students and the faculty. Mr. Gary possesses a Winning personality and has shown remarkable ability in solving the many problems that have developed. While We regret his leaving We wish him prosperity and health and hope that his success in this new venture will be as great as it was at West Linn. Many of our class, both boys and girls, were already planning to join some branch of the armed service-they would not be here in Iune to come back for graduation exercises so mid-term exercises were held. We Wish to thank the faculty and our two able advisors, Miss Moffatt and Mr. Main, for their guidance through our three and a half years of high school. Although the semester passed rapidly, we had many good times and take away with us pleasant memories of West Linn High School. or l MARILYN RUST DARRELL THOMPSON Vuiedictoriun Sulutntoricm Class Will We, the Ianuary graduating class of 1944, being about to possess our diplomas, still in our right minds and under no influences, do declare this our last will and testament, dividing our great abundance of hidden assets among our esteemed faculty and the poor and feeble-minded students who still at- tend this institution. To the Iune Class, we leave our reputation for them to live down. To the Iunior Girls, the hope that the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps leave enough freshman boys to go around. NO PICTURES HANK QUADE WAYNE ROBERTSON Class Prophecy-Ianuary Seniors Dear Marilyn: I understand that you have just returned from South America. I still can't realize you are the famed Entomologist Rust. Did you find that rare species of insect you were hunting for? The last time I saw you we were talking over old times, wondering what had become of our classmates that graduated from old West Linn, so I decided to look as many of them up as possible on my vacation. Locating some of them was quite a problem, but I hired the Iohn Stone Detective Agency to help me out, with grand results. Isabel Vinson was the most difficult to track down, but I've finally located her as a tourist guide in the Swiss Alps. She offered us cut rates if we ever cared to take a climb. She said she had received her inspiration for her work, riding up and down the train with Bill Larson, who operates the said train to the top of Mount Hood. We were able to locate several in New York. As you know, Walt Logsdon writes the Advice to the Love-lorn column in one of the large New York papers, but did you also know Art Huebner conducts the sight-seeing bus through China Town? It was by the sheerest of luck that we found one of the others. It was as we were walking down Broadway, that we looked in a restaurant window and there stood Wayne Robertson turning flap jacks. We went in and invited him to go to the opera with us to hear Lee Hornshuh in the leading role of the Desert Song, but Wayne preferred to go to the Madison Square Gardens to see Gloria Eisele, the world's greatest tight rope walker. Of course, while we were in New York, we stayed in the hotel managed by Pat Brennan, but imagine our surprise to have the bell-hop who carried up our bags to turn out to be Cecil Iohnson. On my way back home I stopped near Reno, Nevada, and Visited Darrell Thompson's Dude Ranch. Taking a much needed rest there from the heavy work in Hollywood was Bud Larson, the great dress designer, and Albert Cissman, dance director of the follies. On my way back up to Portland I stopped in San Francisco to hear Charles Marshall, who is a news commentator now. In his evening broadcast he told of the plans for the first around the world non-stop trip in a one-man sub- marine to be made by Bob Hooff and sponsored by Hank Quade, President of the Submarine Company. I feel sorry for Bob's wife Iwho was Claudia Ishaml who must stay home and operate the streetcar between Oregon City and Portland for him while he is gone. I guess I have told you of everyone of our old classmates, Oh no! there is Chuck Marx, about whom I neglected to tell you. He is piloting the plane between Seattle and Alaska. I will be seeing him in a few days as I must fly back to my hot dog stand on the Alcan Highway as the tourist trade is terri ic. Do drop in and see me before you leave the States again, and write soon. AS EVER. Of one thing though We are sure, that each and everyone of us is going out determined to do his bit to bring about a victorious peace. Many ol us are going into the service of our country, both boys and girls. As we leave, we are thank- ful for the good times We have enjoyed at West Linn, for the guidance ot our superintendent and principal, Mr. Gary, and for the ideals and knowledge the faculty gave us. There were many activities in which We took part whole heartedly. Among them were all sports, band, chorus, pep club, home economics, and Latin clubs. We are Very proud to say that in this past year, more sophomores are represented in the Honor Society than either Iuniors or Seniors. Class otlicers are lay McMurren, Gordon Murphy, Mary Kern, Palma Kittleson, and Dick lrion with Miss Rod- man and Miss MacRae, our able advisors. Freshman Class '44 MISS HART DON BYERS MISS MCGUIRE Advisor President Advisor Although the Freshies got off to a rather bad start by losing the annual bag rush to the Sophomores, they soon made up tor it in other tields. We contributed several members to the band. Our beauty crop has added vitality to the Pep Club, while other melodious lads and lasses have added their talents to the Girls and Boys Choruses. We even invited the Sophomores to a skating party. This turned out to be a great success, thanks to our advisors, Miss Hart and Miss McGuire. As a whole, Freshmen activities have been successes. Olticers are Don Byers, president, Bruce Wolfe, vice-president, Betty Olson, secretary and Maralyn De Bok, treasurer. I F. Mrs Watson Art lt is the job of journalists to present to you a pictorial record of your school and to remind you of its good points, to note traditions and to foster them, to present a fair record of achievements and personalities, and to do these things as well as our time, money, and abilities permit. The Green and Gold, this year, attempts to be a real annual, a roundup of everybody at school, introducing us to one another, faculty, freshman, workers behind the scenes, artists, singers, leaders, followers, brain trusters, athletes, and, most of all, just plain West Linn students, We want to express our gratitude to lvfrs. Watson and the art classes for their splendid drawings. Without their help the Annual Staff could not have :,:uccefz.:fully produced this volume and we feel they deserve special tribute. STUDENT BODY PLAY-THE BLUE BAG Cust: Chattanooga, Mary Kay Iohnsonp Dramotics Coach, Miss MacBaeg Mrs. Mocklyn, Yvonne McCauln , Letty, Donna Shainholts, George, Bill Hetherington, Anton, Bob Wievesickp Bill, Darrell Thompson' Mr Keefer, Don Hadley, Enid, Irene Shepard, Allen, Bud May, Mrs. Keeler, Margaret Van Laninghoni. Drarnatics, under the direction of Miss Ethel MacRae, has attempted to make their Work this year, far more flexible in nature than the Word, Drama, often implies. Using the Drama class as the nucleus, its personnel has spent many hours of real Work in rehabilitating the stage, a real task for an interior decorator. Mrs. Pearl Watson, with her timely suggestions, designed clever motifs for redecorating the large dressing room on the left of stage. Stage work began with a thorough cleaning of both cyclorama and cur- tains, a much needed improvement. Flats, which are used in creating stage effects, are now found in a bin erected by the boys. The area, housing the footlights, was cleaned and the apron scraped and repainted. An endeavor to brighten the entire stage was brought about by the constant swish of brushes wielded by girls and boys, alike. Students, as well as faculty, welcomed early in December the rib-tickling play, The Blue Bag. Chattanooga was well supported by an earnest cast, for the most part, making their first appearance. Spring ushered in One-Act plays with participation by every member of the drama class The one-act play, Betty Behave, was presented for the Mothers Day tea, May 12. Hi-Y lst row, leii to right. Football CECIL IOHNSON COACH BROWN ART HUEBNER Outstanding Player IUSPUUUOU An epoch of football enthusiasm enclosed the West Linn campus the first of the football season as the Lions made their annual jaunt to Kelly Field and whipped the Oregon City Pioneers 13 to 6. This stretches West Linn's win streak over the Pioneers to three straight. ln league competition the Lions didn't fare very well, because most of their players were participating in their first year of varsity ballg while other T.Y.V. schools had an abundant supply of lettermen, The Lions managed to end the season with an even percentage with four wins and four losses as they subdued three non-league opponents. Cecil Iohnson-Without his driving and ability we surely would have been lost. Art Huebner-Selected by the team as the most inspirational player. P really good end. Bob Brending-A good player to have for tough blocking assignments. Played guard. Lee Hornshuh-His blocking from the center position was responsible for much yardage on plays through the center of the line. Wayne Robertson-Though not an exceptional runner he was deadly when a pass was coming his wayi Paul Miken-An outstanding tackle, large and heavy enough to stop any fellow coming his way. Bob Wood-Tough, small, his passing and place kicking from the tail back spot also accounted for many valuable points. Lee Bettinger-Tough, small, he very effectively blocked on all the plays. Bill Larson-Another end who should have come out for football sooner. Showed great promise. Bob Smith-He was always in breaking up plays. A very effective player on defense. Individual Players-Football 1944 Snail LE ROY HORNSHUH BOB BRENDING ARTHUR HUEBNER DON SMITH RONALD BAIRD IOHN SELNES IERRY RYAN DARRELL THOMPSON BILL LARSON LEE BETTINGER BOB SMITH PAUL MIKEN OLIN PEPPER IAY MCMURREN BOB WOODS l Mr. Nixon When Mr. Nixon left West Linn High School in March to join the armed forces, faculty and student body wished him well. His going was a real loss and We all look forward to the time when he will return. The Lions have received some pretty hard breaks this year. They started the season under Coach Sam Nixon, but when he was called into the service, the position was taken by Earl Stone, their present mentor. The armed service handed them a set-back when it took Cecil Iohnson, one of their three experi- enced players, and surely one of their best. The Lions' record for the season is 6 wins and 10 losses.
