Apex Strives For Excellence I. T. VAUGHN, B.A. Key Club IUDITH LANE SCHMOLL, B.A, Theatre Guild, International Thespians LYNN MARINO, B,ED. JANE ALEO, B.S. EUGENE SWETIN, B.A. Apex, Appropriate Placement for Excellence, was on trial basis and it will continue to be used next year. i'The purpose of Apex is to improve student motivation for learning the skills and concepts in the discipline of English. By allowing students to take specific courses they are interested in we hope to increase their motivation for learningf' stated Mr. Tweed, the department head. Apex is for Sophomores, juniors, and Seniors. Freshmen take a required year long course. This includes communica- tion skills, general orientation, and literary concepts. There are three steps to determine specific courses. The first step is to give to each student a Student Interest Inven- tory Sheet. This lists the courses which may be given next year. A student chooses four according to taste and returns it to his teacher. The top 30 selections and an additional 5 courses which the department thinks would benefit the stu- dent are then offered. Pre-registration sheets are handed out, and students again choose 4 courses according to prefer- ence. Courses attracting too few are dropped. The third and last step is for each student to register for the following yearis classes. Courses are grouped according to the degree of difficulty. These range from one thru five. Students choose on their own. If however, a counselor feels a student needs a course, she can try to pursuade him to take it. Some of the courses offered in the 1971-1972 year were Creative Writingn and 'iFilm Makingw. These range from grammar to literature enrichment. 8 ,ffri A
