CARL GEBHARDT, M.A. Social Studies The main objective of the Social Studies Department is to better inform students about themselves and the people and places of the world so that the students will be able to associate in their communities, nation and the world, also to expose them to the great thinkers and philosophers whose ideas have and still are shap- ing the nation and world in which we live. World history students were involved in a new na- tional program that was originated at Leyden by the department chairman, Mr. Schneider. The program is entitled, Voices From Developing Nations and its purpose was to give students a better understanding of the developing nations of Africa, Asia, and Latin Amer- ica. Students were able to hear returned Peace Corps volunteers, on tapes, talk about their fascinating experiences. The contemporary problems course was updated so that it would reflect problems of today and to give new instructors a chance to bring their ideas into the curriculum.
