Varsity Basketball Becomes High Scoring Team The 1970-71 varsity basketball team, coached by Darl Kriete, had a very successful season. lim Valentino led the offense with a total of 381 points and a total of 468 points in the all-time scoring. With that amount of points, he became the top scorer in the Des Plaines Valley Conference and an all-conference player. Dave Combs received an honorable mention from the con- ference coaches and was 9th in the all-time scoring with a total of 403 points. Another leading scorer on the team was Bob Kozak who placed 8th in the all-time scoring with a total of 457 points. The team scored a total of 1512 points compared to 1155 points for their opponents and were 4th in the all- time field goal percentage. They were also 2nd in the all-time free throw percentage. The Knights finished the season with an 8-6 confer- ence record and a 4th place finish. In the basketball sectional at Maine East, the Knights lost a close game to Maine South, 65-62. The members of the varsity team who did not play regularly, placed 4th in the l.V. level. They along with juniors, Steve Eddelman and Dan Pikel will return next year for another fine season. ROW 2, Coach Soph Basketball The Sophomore basketball team, coached by Phil Waddell, improved greatly over their freshman show- ing. Although they had a conference record of 4-10, and a season record of 7-14, the individual players made vast improvements on their skills. Several of the players will be playing on the varsity team next year. Mike Spejcher was the most valuable player on the team. lim Constantino was voted the most inspirational player by his teammates.
