Varsity Football Team Earns Respect Coach Ohlson once said the football team can do one of three things: win, get beat, or lose. He said the team would never lose but would have to be beaten. With these words of confidence, the team went on the field and earned the respect they deserved. They set a new record by intercepting 18 passes. The old record was 4. At the end of the season, they posted a 4-4 record and placed fifth in the league. Five West Leyden players made the Des Plaines Val- ley League all-Star Football Team for 1970. On the of- fensive team, Ray Cireeley, captain, and Randy Kruse, this year's most valuable player, were selected. Those selected for the defensive team were Terry Fox, Scott McKinney, and jim Valentino. Terry Fox is considered one of the top football players in the League. Scott McKinney passed for 5 touchdowns and 5 extra points, ran for 2 touchdowns plus one extra point and inter- cepted 4 passes. lim Valentino caught 11 passes for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns and one extra point. Others deserving recognition are Ron Lemanczyk, lay Bodine, Charlie Halan, and Ken Regis. Ron Lemanczyk was credited with 93 carries for 451 yards. jay Bodine car- ried the ball 110 times for 550 yards. Charlie Halan was an outstanding junior guard and defensive middle guard. Ken Regis was the best blocking full-back in the league. He carried the ball 29 times for 166 yards. He made 2 touchdowns and caught 4 passes. The Knights will continue to be 'a team' to be re- ckoned with in the future.
