IYIEEEHEI NUM WI ENDED T To The Class of l95l S thls IS bemg wr1tten the cxtlzens of Amer1ca face a bleak future To be sure the threat of Com mumsm 1n the world today causes one to look mto the future w1th despalr It becomes no laughxng Joke when the Pres1dent of the Unlted States proclalms a state nat1onal emergency The wheels of mobllxzatlon have begun both m1l1tar1ly and xndustrlally Congress de bates rearmmg Western Europe Ironlcally enough we read that Japan may become our greatest ally I short we are gearlng for war or at least preparmg for the pOSS1b1lIty of another World War Thls state of affalrs must be confusxng and bewmld erzng to you as a h1gh school sen1or So lt becomes d1ff1cult to know what to say to a group of young peo ple ready to leave hxgh school You wonder what edu cat1on IS for anyway 1f we use It only for destruct1on and mf It means mmlltary servlce and sac r1f1ces on the part of everyone I agree wzth thxs general premlse but there are two fallac1es xn th1s klnd of reasornng Flrst forces mn addxtlon to those of educat1on tend to mold the thlnkxng of a free people Forces operate for good and forces operate for ev1l Wars do not breed m a publxc school They breed ln the m1nds of men who l1ve 1n a godless world condmtloned by greed lust for power and a th1rst for blood Second It seems from every nat1onal confl1ct both here and throughout the world that some good emerges New d1scover1es are converted to c1v1l1an use and people can l1ve a more complete 11 e Toward the mxddle of the eleventh century the Holy Land had been ln non Chr1st1an hands that IS Mohammedan hands for over four hundred years But when the brutal Seljuk Turks overran the Holy Land 1n the eleventh century thmgs were changed So we had the crusades a desxre to rescue Palestlne from the hands of the xnfxdels Pope Ur ban responded to a call for help by Emperor Alex1us at Constantlnople and lssued the fxrst summons to engage rn a holy war Also a lxttle later we had the Dark Ages when forty percent of the people of Europe dxed because of the Plague But as Europe began to emerge from the Dark Ages a movement sprang up called scholast1c1sm Was th1s then an age of total darkness when great un1vers1t1es were begmnmg to sprmg up on every hand un1vers1t1es llke Cambrrdge Oxford and Pans If then we remember the lessons hlstory taught I am certa1nl1fe holds much in store for us xf we are w1ll1ng to work and pay the prlce It may seem that we are entermg a 'Dark Age but 501719 how wlth the help of God we w1ll work out of It Don t glve up Don't surrender your her1tage Yes It calls for settmg up defenses To thls end you can be of endless serv1ce to yourself and to your country It has been a pleasure to know you and to have worked w1th you I hope that graduatlon wlll not sever the bonds that keep people a l1ttle closer together May I hear from you no matter what your stat1on mn l1fe shall be and may all the good thlngs 1n hfe be yours and Godspeed Smcerely f Superv1s1ng Prlnc lpal 7 V. - V B . , . . . . . . To The Class of 1951 umgn IRST I want to say Congratulations not be cause of your receiving a diploma 1n the near future but because you have completed your high i school education This IS an important accomplishment especi ally in these days of tempting high paying Jobs and voluntary enlistments in one s choice of military branch If only everyone who started with your class back 1n ninth grade would have completed his education' Iam sure some of them are sorry now But you have no cause to be Maybe not now but later on you will realize how wise you were to remain in school You have done a service to your country by doing so This nation needs intelligent men and women people who can make intelligent decisions people who can read and interpret news intelli gently We need to carry on our democratic way of life in the face of the attempt to spread other desirable ways of life throughout the world Having completed your high school education makes you better able to keep our nation mentally and physically strong those qualities which are listed by the D A R in its project to select 'Good Citizens and I can think of no better way to say farewell than to review them again for you I Dependability Were you loyal to your high School? Will you be loyal to your college and loyal to your employer? One must be able to depend upon you for speaking the truth always One must be able to depend upon you to be punctual in all your engagements This is an important quality which you should possess to an outstanding degree II Service Be cooperative in all your undertakings Give and take alike Be courteous to and considerate of your fellowmen III Leadership Show ability to assume responsibility and also be willing to follow the leader Exercise self control and self d1SC1pl1I1C Your personality will play an important part in how well this quality is exemplified IV Patriotism In these months made dark by war clouds this quality is doubly important You all must take an unselfish interest in your nation and in its affairs with other nations in your commumty and in your home and family Y ur one big aim in life should be to be a Good Citizen You can't help but be a good Citi zen if you can possess these qualities that I have mentioned My best wishes to each one of you Sincerely Kenneth H Snyde r 8 ld x x or Il - lI-- - k R . . . p V . - ' r .- . . , . . .
