To The Senior Class of 1949 T agam becomes my happy privilege to write a word to your class as a fitting benediction your work here at West Lampeter Yet I should not want you to consider this writing w1th any finality but rather a challenge to do even better I am also happy to have had the privilege of bemg with you for the past sue years We entered this High School building together in the fall of 1943 During this period of time I was able to watch you grow and make many observations So, naturally I am proud of your attamments You spent more than half of your school time under very adverse circumstances I am wor ned lest you consider these adverse conditions as an acceptable pattern of living, and lest you should think that money, materials and services will always abound in your lives NO, dismlss this idea from your thmking immediately The curve of inflation will sometime dip, and unless you are prepared to absorb the shock and are willing to drop from your lofty pinnacle of inde pelimdence, you will be severely disappointed in life and mental confusion and frustration will re s t You may as well be told right here that vou must face some grim realities of hfe While seem ingly we have wealth liberty, scientific technology, a.nd mtell1gence, we must nevertheless 30,000 people killed on the highways annually thousands of children not in school, the threat of cancer, polio, and tuberculosis is still with us So we cannot afford to accept the status quo as a true pattern of living Deeper values exist and will some day prevail You will have to discover some of these yourself You will be g1ven opportunity In 1929 when I entered Teachers College I was advised agamst going into teaching I soon discovered that there is plenty of room at the top Look at the teaching situation toda With present growth of population, and lack of building, by 1960 a large portion of America s teachers will be on emergency certification Would you want a mayor surgical operation per formed by an emergency physician ? Would you want an emergency lawyer plead a manslaughter case for you? Of course not So, my thought to you at this time is to warn you about a pseudo type of living as prevailed during the war and post war period and prepare for the real tasks ahead There IS a place wait ing for you if you look around, even look back sometimes as jesus told Iohn the Baptist when they met for the first time by the sea of Galilee Your responsibilities, then, become clearly defmed Gwen then, that you cannot do otherwise, to paraphrase the gospel writer Luke You will be increased in wisdom and stature, and in fa vour with God and man With best wishes m your work and your personal life, I remain Sincerely Qgifwf 557 M0-e f'!
