This might be because of all the material available for stuay, or because we want to talk to our friends about the happenings of the night before. For those who wish to study, Howard Evans, librar- ian, is always on hand to give much needed service. Many are the times he has helped on research papers and themes. New books are ever being added to our library shelves. A grand addition this year was two new sets of encyclopediae Magazines such as Post, Colliers, Life, and Charm are the cause, on days of arrival, of many a stampede to the library. The first thing we will hear is l'Como esta usted in Espanol, We can then enjoy many of the fiestas, exciting games, and the holidays of the colorful Mexicans. We happened to find some of those friends we wrote to in Spanf ish through Mrs. Gladys Isaac. We learned to pronounce Spanish words and learned their meanings. We had many conversations in class where we would ask questions in Spanish to other mem' bers of the class and we learned to answer them very well, Some poems and songs were learned and the cultural life of Mexico and the South American countries was studied. A band lends pageantry and color to any game, but especially when it is our band, playing for our games, and playing our songs. We had a very good band this year and it added some thrilling moments to our athletic events. The band made wonderful progress, even though we did lose a lot ot members through graduation last year. lamie Iamison led the band in his white suit and tall cap, While the majorettes performed in front of him. The maiorettes this year were Edith Kennedy, Pat Morrison, Linda Barrett, and Betty Bible, their fine exhibition and fancy routines were much appreciated by the audience. Of course our band was not only a marching, but a concert band, too. lt played ,at the spring concert and made a good showing at the various contests. The band and orchestra contests give the musicians a chance to learn from other orf ganizations and to show them what we can do, West Side pupils did very well in the individ- ual solo contests and ensemble contests. ln the district, fourteen out of the twenty-five conteste ants won firsts. Under the guidance of Mr. Ellis Hopkins, sponsor, and Dorothy Ayres, editor, the two staffs published twelve issues during the year. There are many highlights that the staffs will remember. They will recall the tirst issue which was put together during the sultry days of August so that it could be distributed along with schedules on the first day of school in September. They will remember the big Christmas issue that contained the prize-winning stories, poems, and essays of the annual Scarlette Christmas composition contest, They will remember with a smile the carnival foolishness in the big April Fools issue, Perhaps the seniors will recall with a slight note of sadness the last issue that they worked on, the May l9 issue. The juniors may remember the enthusiasm that they displayed on their first issue, the Iune 9 issue, which was put out by the l95O-Sl staff, We, the Scarlette staff of l949-50, are deeply indebted to the Lafayette Printing Company, who printed the paper, for their service, co-opera- tion, and advice, to Prof. Gretchen A. T L. to r.: Pat Bartlett, President, Arlene Rogers, Vice President, Miss Fites, Sponsor, Marilyn Meyer, Secretary-Treasurer. g.a.a.: for exercise and fun The Girls' Athletic Association has had an active year under the sponsorship of Miss Fites and the leadership of its officers: Pat Bartlett, president, Arlene Rogers, vice pres- ident, and Marilyn Meyer, secretary-treasurer. The girls strive to achieve awards based on points re- ceived from participating in soccer, volleyball, swimming, speedball, bowling, tennis, baseball, archery, and tum- bling. Having earned 5 points, they receive a club ping l5U points, a numeral, 250 points, a WL. letter, 350 points, a state award. ' This year the GAA. archery team won first place at Huntington and in April a few of the girls attended G.A.A. State Camp. The pencil machine placed in the library, candy sales, and mixers are a few of the ways GAA. has made money.
