The West Express was a main source of information for the students, as well as being fun to read. The local gossip seemed to be the most popular topic in the paper. Her staff included one freshman, two eighth graders and one seventh grader: Julie Wright, Mary Woodard, Lori Brown, and julie Guthrie. CBCDY DCES lT BETTER 4. Ni The 8:10 bell rang and once again another year's activities began. Students opened 'their books and began another hard year of studying. English, math, social studies, and science became a part of their daily routine. The work wasn't easy but we did it. However, it didn't occupy the entire day's hours. Students kept busy by joining the Pep Club and cheering on the sports teams, selling candy- bars for the Student Council, attending matches with the traveling debate team, rehearsing for this year's Freshman Play, competing with other fourth hour classes in softball games during A and B lunches, making floats for the holiday parades, rehearsing for choir concerts, working in the Regal Eagle concession stand, campaigning for Student Council offices and attending pep assem- blies. More students participated in the school's wNE.Sl Carol Ellison works off excess energy be fore her afternoon classes. Second-vice president Marcia Asquith waves 'bye-'bye to Mr. Tobey's calico .The school playground was a place for friends to sit and talk on lunch hour. The CUl'IBif1S- large, grassy campus was a natural for rest and relaxation. ',:p- Students Prove 1980 To Be The Best Year Ever activities than was expected. Victory parties at Ken's Pizza were overflowing, as was the enthusi- asm. The conduct of the student body at victory parites has been greatly improved over last year. School spirit is really better than it was last year. It makes me glad I'm a cheerleader, said head cheerleader Sally Simpson. I think maybe the fire had alot to do with it. The attendance at football games has gone up, so has the score, she proudly stated. The yells have been Iouder. ludy Mitch- ell, cheerleader sponsor, said that she was very impressed with the school enthusiasm. The students worked together this year more ever than ever before. Each person took part in making this the best year ever. 3 4 Susan Freeman and Darrin Lauscher find that two makes better company than one. Susan and Darrin are both Freshman and are loving every minute of it. Disco-dancer Pam Syrus struts for the camera. Pam proved her talent at the mixers where she always drew crowds of watchers. Q ' Y rar-- , km Q . .. u ,L 5 fm' l l l 1 S E la Above is Mrs. Carol Casey, the new school librarian. She came to West from Warner, Ok. The fire totally wiped out the library in the old building. So, this year we had to start from scratch, said Mrs. Casey. The library is slowly filling up with books, magazines and audio visual equipment thanks to other city schools, patrons and the dedicated work of Mrs. Casey. She added that she would try to mold the library into a media center situation. David Napier carefully tools a piece of leather, which will later become a miniature saddle. Leathercraft is only one of the many interesting projects learned in the crafts class directed by Mr. Ed Gibson. Crafts students are introduced to copperart, decoupage, wood carving, mirror art, resin- casting, and more. The crafts couse is one of the most popular electives chosen by seventh, eighth and ninth graders. When we asked David why he decided to take this elective, he said, I've always been kind-of artistic and I like working with my hands. He also said that he really enjoys the class. 1Greg Payton, Valerie Batchelor, Alex Reynolds and April Baker stop for a shot in front of the West jr. High sign. The sign reads Temporary Home of West jr. High . The adjustment of moving to the vacated Sadler Annex was not an easy one, but we did it. The new West junior High School will be located at 56th street and Okmulgee and construction is scheduled to be finished in the Spring of 1982. More people could be served this year because of the large space in which to work. Students were thankful for the brrr-cold Freeze Pops on hot August days. Fashions ranged from painter's pants to pleats and from Levi's to loafers. Cor- duroy jeans were really big this year as were corduroy blazers. Ties were in the form of rib- bons and sweaters were ac- cepted. French collars went out and rounded ones came in. Velour also edged its way into the scene. However alot of the students wore what is always in style Levi's and t-shirts. A few students were seen wearing a pair of Calvin Klein's which are only Levi's with Mr. Klein's name on the righthand back pocket ... never-the-less jeans. Suspenders also were fairly popular. ' So you see the trends will al- ways constantly come and go. In fact if you kept these pleats, blazers and shirts long enough you'll no doubt be able to wear them in style again before long. Pictured to the right is juli Wolfe and Ann Boos, ninth graders. Juli is wearing a cordu- roy blazer with a rounded col- lared shirt. Ann is wearing a pair of Calvin Klein corduroy jeans, a tweed blazer and a rib- bon tie.
