Monday started off the week with the social and the slave sale. Slave day was Tues- day as well as the first half of hall decorating which took place after school. Wednesday was Crazy Day, when everyone dressed his craziest. Wednesday was also the second half of hall decorating. Thursday was even better, Arthur Fonzerelli Day, more commonly known as 50's day. The student, faculty basketball game and hall judging took place after school on Thurs- day. This great week ended on Friday with the Awards' Assembly and a Spirit Week dance. To their success were two plays, Meet Me In St. Louis and a muscial entitled Rock 'n Roll . West's fall play, Meet Me ln St. Louis , directed by Mrs. Hopkins, was a complete sell out on both nights of its presentation. This three act situa- tion comedy took place in 1908, and showed the frantic hay-wire that can happen in the everyday hilari- ous family. The spring play, Rock 'n Roll , a nostalgic '5O's musical, was also a success, directed by Mrs. Hop- kins, Mrs. Taft and Mrs. Freeman. The play was about a dreamy, high school romance. Besides putting on the plays, the club saw various drama programs and certainly made their eslxtence worthwhile. I 1. West Excels In Forensics 1976 was definitely one of the best years that the West forensic program has ever had. Under the coaching of Mrs. Hopkins they com- peted in the state junior high for- ensics contest at the University of Michigan and brought back sev- eral trophies, medals and certifi- cates. There was also a school contest and a spring junior high tourna- ment in which this group competed. Also, they told children's stories for various elementary schools in Taylor. This group works and has fun at the same time, and enriches every part of this school. After all, if you can't communicate with other peo- ple, what's the point of existing at all? That's what forensics is all about, human communication, and West is definitely best! 1. Carolyn Click, Mark Cuddy, and Chris Rutledge rehearse a multiple reading. 2. The Booster Club The West Booster Club, sponsored by Miss Frank, enjoyed another successful year. Helping to make this year a success were such fund-raising projects as the selling of candy canes at Christmas, and carnations for Valentines' Day. The club also sponsored another DancelSocial during Spirit Week, and sold popcorn at several of our home football and basket- ball games. As a part of America's Bicen- tennial Celebration, the Booster Club sold West Spirit of '76 T-shirts. On November 17th, West was officially recognized by the Taylor Bicentennial Com- mission as a participating Bicentennial school . West was one of the first schools in the nation to receive this special kind of recognition. Included in the ceremony was the officialraising of the Betsy Ross flag and the Bicentennial flag. A sign-placque was also set up on the school grounds. The student Council Bicentennial Com- mittee worked with Mr. Killingbeck to or- ganize and carry out a continuous program involving the student body and faculty. Dur- ing the school year some twenty-three pro- jects involving the Bicentennial were com- pleted. The most ambitious of the projects was the placement of a new flag pole as a lasting memorial to America's Bicentennial. llllisill -av' 4.15K T' ll .J Upper Left: Mr. Killingbeck accepts let- ter of approval declaring West as an of- ficial Bicentennial School, the first in Taylor, from Willard Koths. Our pre-season practice had been such that we were expecting to go undefeated. Our first two games in which we came out victorious, proved that our evaluation of our talent was accurate. lt was during the second game that the turning point of our season took place. Flay Sekula, our leading ball carrier, was injured to the extent that he saw only limited service, and that at half speed, for the rest of the season. This indeed was a costly injury. The rest of the season was a struggle. ' Losing Fiay meant breaking up a backfield that had scored touchdowns the first six times we had the ball on offense. Following Ray's injury we had a difficult time finding the right combina- tion for our backfield which meant we just didn't score much. Our defense was better than aver- age, with John Olsen turning in outstanding performances. However, by the last game of the season, we had gone through a number of key injuries, as a re- sult our season turned out to be quite a disappointment. We will conclude by stating that the talent this team possesed has not yet been fully realized. We are anxiously awaiting to see the type of performers the members of our team will be. We are predicting that we will hear much and read about the successes these people will bring about for their high schools. We wish you many injury-free seasons and great success. Beckius, L. Vega, K. Patterson, C. Fry, T. Christian. The gymnastics class which consisted of 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls, was a great success in its first year at West. Through recommendations and skill require- ments we were able to have the very best gymnasts enroll in the class. From this class 14 girls were select- ed to represent our school. The many hours of diligent practice resulted in a very rewarding experience as well as an excellent season for the team. ' Coach B. Mathewson J. We ended up with a seven win five loss record, but perhaps the most important factor to keep in mind is that our team could have won every one of their games. We were in contention in every game.,This is something we are proud of. We never gave up. A coabh can- not askfor more. This years's boys' gymnastics, under the direction of Mr. Henry, have a fine job of exhibiting West's gym- nastics throughout the year. The team participated in several meets, and placed well in all. -' Gymnastics is divided into six categories in which the boys compete: tumbling, floor exercise, trampo- line, uneven bars, balance beam, and vaulting.
