school lufe We wauted un a happy yet apprehensuve mood for the bell to rung and the doors to open to admut us as freshmen to West Jefferson Hugh School Most of us Jr lls could be classufued un euther of two ways those who were tumud and afraud of hugh school and realuzed that they really dudnt know anythung and those who thought they had reached the heught of learnung and couldnt possubly be taught anythung else be cause they were HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS The three Jr II homeroom teachers Mrs Metta V Ayers Mrs Florence Lloyd and Mrs Ethel Mad dox understood the emotuonal stages we were experuencung and wuth theur help we survuved our furst year and moved one step up the lad der We were now exultant Jr llls As Jr llls we became more unterested school actuvutues The Jr Ils and Jr llls spon sored a Muss Junuor Hugh contest to secure money for the school Annue Chaffune was The Jr lll homeroom teachers Muss Flossue Mae Smuth Mrs Florence Snow and Muss Betty Sue Youngblood durected our actuvutues and enabled us to reach the second step of the ladder Each of us looked forward to becomung a Sr I because then he could choose two sublects un addutuon to hus requured courses Everyone lukes to realuze hus umportance and responsubuluty and these two trauts we felt tremendously It was our furst year un senuor hugh school and our reluance upon others decreased slughtly Mrs Mary Hull and Muss Flossue Mae Smuth went through thus era of feelung and thought wuth us as our homeroom teachers We clumbed to the thurd step When one us a uunuor un hugh school h seems lust a luttle lower than the angels he ANGELS beung senuors of course To our amaze ment however the senuors were very fruendly and helpful and we began to luke the status of beung 'lust a luttle lower than the sensors We were especually proud of our May Queen Betty Morrus who was a lunuor The Sr Il homeroom teachers Mrs Metta V Ayers and Muss Flossue Mae Smuth auded us extensuvely our struggle for the coveted tutle of senuor At last we mounted the golden pedestal In September 1951 we really got that dug nufued senuor feelung There were thurty sux of us un the senuor class We were very enthusuastuc and began early to make plans and to hold electuons Tommy Hann was elected presudent of the class Charles Tumlun vuce presudent and Betty Bates secretary and treasurer The class presented a pre senuor play If Mother Only Knew, and a senuor play Clumbmg Roses, both under the durectuon of Muss Caunette McDonald Durung our uunuor and senuor years cut West Jefferson nune students of our class were elected to membershup un the Natuonal Honor Socuety ln order to funance our annual all the senuors have at some tume thus year token on the roles of salesmen We have sold cold drunks hot dogs Chrustmas cards hand cream shampoo salt and pepper shakers foldung toothbrushes and magazune subscruptuons The latter venture un salesmanshup was clumaxed by a wuener roast guven by the losung team to the wunnung portuon of the class As our homeroom teacher Muss Caunette McDonald has been a source of helpful guudance and welcome fruendshup As a teacher she has served as an unspuratuon to those plannung to enter the teachung professuon No one could ask for a better fruend Many who started wuth u un Jr ll ha e gone theur separate ways some to the servuce of our country some to other schools some to work and some to engage un that happy yet rocky unstututuon of matrumony We wush these former classmates were wuth us to share thus great once un a lufetume experuence hugh school graduatuon As we conclude our hugh school hustory at West Jefferson we do not want to forget the excutung experuences we have had and shared Neuther do we want to forget the mustakes we have made We wush to cherush the happy I1 Fuve years had passed sunce the class of 52 had graduated from West Jefferson All through hugh school ut had been my dream to make a tour of Europe and now my dreams had funally come through Here I was walkung down one of the famous streets of Parus France I had been so busy vuewung the sughts that I had hardly notuced how tured my feet were The next park bench I came to I sat down I began to thunk about all the thungs Europe was noted for One thung I partucularly remem bered from hustory was that Europe was well known for wutchcraft An udea struck me why not go to a fortuneteller and fund out what each member of the class of 52 was doung ' I wondered whom I could ask for unformatuon sunce ut was gettung rather late I decuded to questuon the cute Iuttle person suttung besude me She Iokoed at me and smuled as though she recognuzed me but I knew that ut would be lust luck to meet an acquauntance here un France I asked her uf she knew of a fortune teller as I wanted to fund out what the other members of my hugh school class were doung To my amazement she asked whuch members I would luke to hear about The furst one I thought of was Doyce Jean Aycock because her name was always furst on the roll book She saud Doyce had been pro moted from the post offuce un Bessue and had become presudent of the postal system un At Ianta Georgua Doyces best fruend Thelma Davus was not far away she was head nurse of Lawson and General Hosputal Bobby Vaughn had become one of Chucagos leadung lawyers Hus furst case was that of hus wufe who had sued hum on the grounds that he spent too much tume at home and not enough on hus 'ob Fannue Marquus had won the Muss Alabama Contest of 1957 and was un Atlantuc Cuty com petung for the tutle of Muss Ameruca Lullue Mae Vanderver and Margaret Cucero had funushed Florence State Teachers College and were at West Jefferson teachung a full schedule of eught three classes each of durected study Charles Tumlun and Kenneth Eady were stull close fruends and now owned and operated a chaun of skatung runks and swummunug pools un New York Washungton and Chucago Jean Vanderver was a pruvate secretary to the Secre tary of State and was tenth un Iune for the secretarual posutuon to the Presudent Mary Swundle was a leadung duetutuan at the Mayo Clunuc un Rochester Munnesota where only three had recently dued from food pouson ung and where ten more were beung treated for the ullness Elmer Aycock had graduated from Buble college and was pastor of one of the largest churches un Floruda Sara Gruffuns and Peggy McCulIoughs graceful fugures had se cured for them modelung posutuons at New York s , . , . 1 I ' I f I I 1 1 I . , . . , . u I ' , I t . . . .
