AFJROTC Military Ball On Friday January 5, 1979, the West Jefferson AFJROTC Military Ball was held at the Alvin Callendar Base Officers Club. ARE YOU GOING TO SEE ME NOW was the theme at this year ' s ball. The cadets celebrated their fourth year as an Honor Unit for Louisiana. This year ' s Queen and her court were announced by Group Commander Bruce Heckler. The court was Nancy Cutts as the 1979 Military Ball Queen. Her runner-ups were Wanda Bougere and Barbara Sloane. Mr. Stanley Crosby explains to audience the question- answer phase of the pageant. Perry Austin 1979 marked the third annual pageant of the Black History Club at West Jefferson High School. The purpose of the pageant is to allow young women from the various public high schools on the West Bank to compete in four areas: casual attire, formal attire, talent, and public speaking. The young lady receiv- ing the highest number of points is crowned Queen. The court consists of the Runner-up, First Maid, Second Maid, and Miss Congeniality. The queen and her court participate in the Christmas Banquet, the Annual Soul Feast, and all other subsequent activities of the organization for that year. The reigning queen returns the next year and crowns the new queen. To date, the queens have been Dianne Williams, Lisa Green, and Yolanda Pierce, this year ' s queen. The young men in the club do all the preparatory work; that is, registering the young ladies, setting practice sessions, ordering trophies and plaques, escorting the young women, and presenting the awards. A major objective of the pageant is to build character, initiative, and responsibility on the part of the young men and ladies. 59
