LA Boys State Attracts 10 West Jeff Seniors West Jefferson was represented at the 38th annual Louisiana Boys State held on the L.S.U. campus in Baton Rouge during August. The ten students were recommended by their teachers during their junior year to the American Legion and its Auxiliaries. The American Legion and local business organizations provide transporta- tion, room and board, and meals to students from all over the state. When the students arrive, they are separated from almost everyone they know. Each group of 35 people writes up its own laws and elects its own officials. The groups are named after cities in Louisiana. The group then forms parishes combined of two cities. Each parish sets up a court system and actually tries people in the courts. They then divide each parish into two par- ties called the Nationalists and the Federalists. Each party elects one candidate to run for Gov., Lt. Gov., Secretary of State, etc. After the election takes place, each student has learned how each and every person can have a voice in election of state officials. One of the best things about the program is the opportunity each student gets to meet people from all over the state. They will probably never forget them for the rest of their lives. Cheerleader Awards The West Jefferson cheerleaders returned from Texas this summer with several awards and ribbons. The squad attended camp at Sam Hous- ton State University in Huntsville, Texas. Their awards included 1 excellent ribbon, 3 superior ribbons, The Super Star Squad ribbon, and the Spirit Stick. The most prized award was, for the 3rd consecutive year, again awarded to the W.J. squad — The Spirit Megaphone. This is voted on by the 90 squads in attendance for the squad with the most spirit and enthusiasm throughout the week, or as the National Cheerleader Assoc, instructor said The one squad the others felt deserved it.
