AFJROTC West Jefferson ' s Air Force Junior ROTC is the largest Air Force Unit in Louisiana. In addition to cadets from West Jefferson, Title IX cadets from Ehret and Higgins High Schools are bussed to West Jefferson to participate in the program. The 63rd Louisiana AFJROTC Group — the official name of the organization consistently has been recognized as an HONOR UNIT, the highest recognition according to the Air Force. The Group is noted for: 1. the large number of full scholarships received (to the academics) 2. the multiple activities and service projects 3. the excellence of organization 4. the leadership opportunities provided 5. the guidance and counseling provided cadets 6. the citizenship, character, and discipline of its cadets. Training in ROTC is centered on aero space education, leadership training and career oppor- tunities. The instructors have a combined experi- ence of over 80 years in the military and 30 years of teaching. 255

Foreign Language The foreign language department offers French, Spanish and Latin. The basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are stressed. The cultural approach is emphasized with the help of movies, filmstrips, maps, and other audio-visual aids. The student is made aware of the French and Spanish heritage of this area. Students participate in the language festi- vals at the University of New Orleans and the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafay- ette. Each year food festivals are sponsored. Trips to study the influence of Spanish and French in architecture of the French Quarter and area are planned. Field trips include a river boat ride, visits to museums and theatres. 254

DE, COE, T l Students at West Jefferson are offered three courses in which they come to school for three hours per day and work in the field for the rest of the day. In the Cooperative Office Education classes, the students do work in the offices of the commu- nity and use all of the clerical skills they have learned. In the Distributive Education classes, the stu- dent works in the sales, marketing, and retailing fields. In the Trade and Industry classes, the students have the opportunity to work directly with indus- try. The purpose of each program is to incorporate the high ideals of the programs into the personal- ities of the students through sound working tech- niques in the business community. In addition to classwork, the DE and the COE students are organized into DECA and COE with both clubs jointly sponsoring employers to a night at the Beverly Dinner Playhouse. ;i 256
