English West Jefferson ' s English teachers instruct their students in spelling, grammar, vocabulary, com- positions, American literature, British literature, World literature Advanced placement, reading speech, filmmaking, drama, and journalism. Courses are based on the continuous program concept. This means a student does not move to the next level until he has mastered his present level. The continuous progress program provides a challenge to each student while avoiding the frustration of being confronted with material with which he cannot deal. Special English projects include the Literary Fair, the Jefferson Parish Players, and the various contests which are held during the school year. 252

Music and Art West Jefferson has an excellent music and art department that certainly meets the needs of the student. In the music area vocal and instrumental music are offered. The vocal program includes choral work as well as the study of today ' s music. Music appreci- ation is stressed. In the instrumental music area the student has the basic classes, then is offered participation in the Marching Band, the Stage Band, and the Con- cert Band. The Buccaneer Marching Band has brought countless honors to the school and many outstanding trophies from Carnival parades. In the Art department the student is offered drawing, painting in oils as well as acrylics, papier-mache work making masks, etc.; jewelry making in silver, gold and other metals. He has the opportunity to exhibit his works at the art shows in Oakwood and in the main office of the school.
