Close-Up Goes to Washington West Jefferson once again had the opportunity to observe the National Government in action by par- ticipation in the Close-Up program this past year. The program was held in Washington, D.C., on February 4-10, 1979. It was a week long study in Gov- ernment, concentration on seminars with people involved in National Politics. Students participated in dialogues with members of both the House of Representatives and the Sen- ate, Journalists, Representatives of the Executive and Judicial Branches, lobbyists, and Ambassadors. The total program price of $486.00 was raised individually by each member. This included round-trip air transportation, meals, lodging, medical and life insurance. The teacher-coordinator for this year ' s Close-Up program was Mr. Joe Potts. Mr. Potts stated that he did not believe that there was a more successful, and social experience that sophomores, juniors, sen- iors could become involved in during their high school years. Mr. J. Cheerleaders The West Jefferson Cheerleaders attended the National Cheerleaders ' Association summer clinic held at Huntsville, Texas. For the 3rd year the squad received the spirit megaphone. This is presented to the squad showing the most spirit. The squad also won the spirit stick, the super star squad ribbon, 4 supe- rior, and 1 excellent ribbon. West Jeff again hosted the N.C.A. one-day gymnastics for cheer- leaders. The squad competed in the state champion- ship competition held at Bonnabel High School, receiving an excellent rating. In February they are planning to take part in the U.N.O. city champion- ship competition. The W.J. cheerleaders are a very active group. Football cheering is only a part of the job. Immediately after tryouts each spring the squad begins to prepare for summer camp and a new season of activities. Ms. D. Russel is sponsor. CO. E. Works A senior business student that is interested in pursuing an office career and earning money has the opportunity to enroll in the Cooperative Office Education program. The program affords this student 3 credit hours and invaluable on-the-job training from the part-time office position. The students are supervised by a teacher-coordinator and a person in the office.
