Black History The Black History Club was established at West Jefferson High School in September, 1970 by the late Wilfred N. Crosby, a former social studies teacher. The objectives of the club were to con- tinue the practice of observing Negro History Week, educate students about the contributions that Black Americans have made to our American society, and to entertain the faculty and parents of club members with a Soul Feast which con- sists of foods prepared the Black way, appro- priately called Soul Food . During the course of time, the objectives of the Black History Club have broadened to include the Black History Pageant where a queen and her court are selected to represent the club; the sing- ing of Christmas Carols and the presentation of a basket of fruits and gifts to the elderly at Heritage Manor; a banquet for the members and their guest s with a reputable speaker from one of the universities in the area; and several other fund raising functions. At the end of the school year, the club also sponsors a picnic for the members and their par- ents. Sponsors this year include Ms. M. T. Cart- wright, Mr. Ralph Hunter, Sr., S. W. BETA Club The Beta Club is an organization open to those students who maintain a 3.0 or better average. The purpose of the club is not to better its members, but to better others by relaying Leadership, Charac- ter, and responsibility throughout our community and school. The state convention is the highlight of the year for the members. We attend the convention to obtain a better understanding of what Beta is all about. This year, we have participated in the Senior Ring Ceremony, career night and sold concessions at the basketball games. We currently have 19 members and hope to induct more members by the end of the year. Mrs. Doescher serves as sponsor to this organization. 1st Row, L to R.
