When the high schools were consolidated in 1955, Mrs. Currault became a mem- ber of the first faculty at West Jefferson High, a position she held for 23 years as a business education and journalism teacher and director of student activities. During the years that she sponsored The Buccaneer, the school yearbook, and The Jolly Roger, the school newspaper, both publications received numerous awards. Mrs. Currault organized and co-sponsored the first Future Business Leaders of America chapter in the Greater New Orleans area. For many years Mrs. Currault had worked with young people and had many hon- ors bestowed upon her. We will miss her dearly. Dur- ing the last eleven years Vfe mil- lion students have been tapped into membership and listed in our Membership Registry. This program provides national rec- ognition for class leaders and also inspires younger students to set high academic goals. As with honor societies on the col- lege level, the prospect of membership in the Society encourages top performance on the secondary school level; a striving toward not merely a good record, but an excellent record. Through National Awards Program, the candidates selected are also eligible to compete for college scholar- ships and grants earmarked for them from sponsoring col- leges. L to R; Brian Pizzolatto, James DiFuIco, Michael Roppolo L to R; Philip Saul, Robert Akins, David Racker 20 Selecting Our Candidates Membership in the Society is designed as a significant and rewarding national high school honor. When making our selections, we first consider academic excellence along with leadership in extracurricular and civic activities. This year we have selected 8 seniors and 6 juniors who have maintained a 3.5 or bet- ter average besides their leadership in extracurricular and civic activities. The ten students were recommended by their teachers during their junior year to the American Legion and its Auxiliaries. The American Legion and local business organizations provide transporta- tion, room and board, and meals to students from all over the state. When the students arrive, they are separated from almost everyone they know. Each group of 35 people writes up its own laws and elects its own officials. The groups are named after cities in Louisiana. The group then forms parishes combined of two cities. Each parish sets up a court system and actually tries people in the courts. They then divide each parish into two par- ties called the Nationalists and the Federalists. Each party elects one candidate to run for Gov., Lt. Gov., Secretary of State, etc. After the election takes place, each student has learned how each and every person can have a voice in election of state officials. One of the best things about the program is the opportunity each student gets to meet people from all over the state. They will probably never forget them for the rest of their lives. Selection has been a coveted honor of the Senior Class members. Each senior receives through his home- room teacher a form to complete regarding his extra-curricular activities, the honors he has received and his contributions to West Jefferson. Using a point system the seniors are then scored by a committee consisting of stu- dents and faculty members and those selected are finally reviewed by another committee of teachers, administrators and disciplinarians. The purpose of the pageant is to allow young women from the various public high schools on the West Bank to compete in four areas: casual attire, formal attire, talent, and public speaking. The young lady receiv- ing the highest number of points is crowned Queen. The court consists of the Runner-up, First Maid, Second Maid, and Miss Congeniality. The queen and her court participate in the Christmas Banquet, the Annual Soul Feast, and all other subsequent activities of the organization for that year. The reigning queen returns the next year and crowns the new queen. To date, the queens have been Dianne Williams, Lisa Green, and Yolanda Pierce, this year ' s queen. The young men in the club do all the preparatory work; that is, registering the young ladies, setting practice sessions, ordering trophies and plaques, escorting the young women, and presenting the awards. A major objective of the pageant is to build character, initiative, and responsibility on the part of the young men and ladies. 59 AFJROTC Military Ball On Friday January 5, 1979, the West Jefferson AFJROTC Military Ball was held at the Alvin Callendar Base Officers Club. Perry Walker and St. Augustine. Even though these games ended in ties and not victories for the Bucs, they made the Scarlet and Silver squad strive for the ultimate goal in prep Quad — A sports, the state cham- pionship. Jamboree The tension was thick for the opening night for the Bucs as they were facing the Hahnville Tigers in a traditional rivalry. The scoring was executed in high fashion by Aaron Kent and Daryll Tripplet. Daryll Triplett going for a TD. Bucs 27 Tarpons 7 The Bucs traveled to Galliano where the 1977 Quad-A champs had never been defeated in three seasons, until the fateful night of Sept. 8 when Quicksilver and Scarlet Fever marched on to glory to defeat the Tarpons. The Bucs ' first score came on a 16 yd. T.D. pass from Dexter Henderson to TE Cordell Robinson. With the superb rushing of Aaron Kent, the Bucs were within scoring range again. The next TD came from Henderson to Daryll Triplett. Great running by Kent, Tripplet, Battle, and Brazil and fine catching by Cordell Robinson and Amando Cas- tillo brought the Bucs to the Tarpons 1 yd line where QB Dexter Henderson took it over from there. With a 20 to 7 lead, one of the Bucs, namely Daryll Triplett, would not give up. He twisted, wiggled, and bal anced his way for a 23 yd TD. Aaron Kent rushed for almost 200 yds. and received the first Prep Player of the Week award for the year. The team also received the rating of the No. 1 Quad A Team in the state. 105 Bucs 7 Eagles Remember the playoffs! could have been the battle cry of the Bucs on this muddy evening, but the history of the playoffs did not repeat itself. The lone WJ touchdown came on a 47 yd run by Darryl Triplett with only 2:37 left in the game. Myron Walker kicking one of many PATs. Bucs 20 Tigers 14 One of the worst officiating jobs ever , commented coach Crosby. Although the Bucs played the officials as well as the Thibodeaux football team, Quicksilver and Scarlet Fever came through as usual. After the Tigers scored early in the first half, the Bucs came roaring back with a two yard run by Edwin Brazil at the end of the half. In the third quarter the Bucs became airborne. The first TD pass came on a 45-yd pass from Henderson to Triplett; the next, a 1 0-yd pass from Hen- derson to Robinson. This win made the long ride home a bit more enjoyable. Let go of my leg. 106 BucsO Bulldogs 29 Plagued by injuries and needing a rest, the Bucs traveled to Lutcher to face the No. 2 ranked triple A power. Quicksilver and Scarlet Fever just couldn ' t get it together. The Bulldogs just out- manned the Scarlet and Silver squad and strip- ped them of their No. 1 ranking. Joe Morton takes an interception. Bucs 20 Roneagles 13 After two hard weeks on the road, the Bucs are glad to be home again. The Roneagles were not ready for what the Bucs had in store for them. A 50 yard drive was capped off by Dexter Hender- son going over from the one. A Scarlet fever blocked punt on the 20 yard line set up the next Buc TD, this one by Superman Aaron Kent. The final WJ tally capped a 60-yard drive. It came when Dexter Henderson scooted around end for 50-yds. This win gave the Bucs extra confidence for the opening district game next week. Mike Grant stops a Hahnville runner. Edwin Brazil breaking through the line. Daryll Triplett on the loose. 107 Bucs22Bruins7 Friday the 13th proved to be an unlucky day as it was believed to be, in ways for both the Bucs and the Bruins. For the Bucs were almost late to the game by being held up, 1) by a burning car, and 2) by a wreck on the bridge. But the Bucs didn ' t mind the extra rest that the unluckiness of the day brought. The day also brought some luck to, Amando Castillo on a 45 yd TD pass; to Daryll Triplett on another scoring pass play; to Dexter Henderson on a 25 yd scoring run, and extra luck to Channing Bennett who replaced Steve Marchese early in the game. Bucs 27 Wildcats 20 The pattern for the outcome of this game was set early in the game by Mr. Outside , Daryll Tri- plett, Quicksilver ' s pride and joy. He ran the opening kickoff back 96 yds for the first Bucca- neer TD. The second scoring drive was capped off by a 12 yd run by Dexter Henderson. The third Buccaneer TD was by West Jefferson ' s Mr. Inside , Aaron Kent, who bulldozed his way to the Bucs ' 3 yd line; two plays later he scored from the 1. Midway in the fourth quarter, the Bucs scored still another TD, this one, a 14 yd pass from Dex- ter Henderson to TE Cordell Robinson. The Scar- let Fever Defense played an excellent game, with- out two of the original starters, but Sophomore and Junior DBs Juan Common and Channing Bennett held up their own with the more experi- enced competition. Come on Aaron, get me out of this. Joe Morton tackling a Patriot. All RBs found out that Scarlet Fever was a raging epidemic. 108 WJ27EJ20 Tonight the Bucs took on their arch-rivals, the East Jefferson Warriors. EJ scored first, but the Bucs came back with a 14-yard pass from Dexter Henderson to Cor ' dell Robinson. The second scoring drive was capped by a 1-yard run by Aaron Kent. A great running show was presented to the crowd by Junior running back James Bat- tle. After a series of runs by Battle, Edwin Brazil ran 12-yards for the score. When starting QB Dexter Henderson was momentarily injured and sat out for a play, Jr QB Clarence Rodrigue went to work. For that one play he was in the game, he threw a 10-yd TD pass to Aaron Kent. James Brown, Darren Johnson, and Juan Common each had key interceptions in this suspenseful game. With this win the Bucs were assured a playoff spot. Darren Johnson breaks up a play. Patriot runner catches Scarlet Fever. Aaron Kent getting extra yardage. Bucs 1 6 Broadmoor 15 One of the most important games of the season is tonight. It is not for the district title, not the state championship, but it is the homecoming game and the Bucs face Broadmoor of Baton Rouge. The Bucs were down 3-0 at the half, but in the third quarter, they came to life by driving 67-yds in eight plays with Aaron Kent getting 44 of them and the last 5 for the go-ahead TD. A Buccaneer pass was intercepted, but when the interceptor tried to return it, Steve Marchese came up, made what looked like a hit, then scooted down the sidelines with the ball tucked under his arm, but was brought down at the 6-yd line. Kent took care of the problem two plays later with a one yard plunge. Broadmoor scored, cutting down the lead. On the next possession, the Bucs went on to a 16-9 lead with a 13-yd FG by Myron Big M . But Broadmoor wouldn ' t stop. They scored with 2:23 left in the game, making the score 1 5-1 6; and the question was to win or to tie. Broadmoor ' s answer was to win, but the Bucs ' answer, stated by Juan Common and Joe Morton was to lose. The Buc answer was right. 109 Bucs 14 Patriots 20 The biggest game on the Westbank took place between the Bucs and the Patriots of John Ehret. West Jeff started out on the right foot by driving down the field after capitalizing on an Ehret fum- ble with Aaron Kent doing the honors from the 2- yd line. After being down 20-6, the Bucs began the climb up with Clarence Rodrigue hitting Daryll Triplett with a 27-yd TD; he then hit Cordell Rob- inson with the two-point conversion. A Bucca- neer rally in the 4th quarter fell short, therefore giving Ehret the so-called West Bank Crown. But hey — who cares about Westbank when there is a state title on the fine? Hey, man, watch it. Buccaneers on the rampage. Playoffs Bucs 14 Jesuit 28 The Superdome was the spot for the first game of the playoffs. The Bucs were stunned by the ini- tial possession of the Blue Jays as they jumped out to a 21 point lead over the Bucs. That 21 point lead was cut to 14 as Phil Ezell picked up a fum- ble (caused by a thunderous hit by Mark Price) and ran 36 yds for a TD. In the third quarter the Bucs, led by Clarence Rodrigue, drove the length of the field for a score. The last scoring threat was halted and the Blue Jays went on to win. Every student in the school has a voice in student affairs through a homeroom representative. Monthly meetings are held with the homeroom representatives to make plans for events, discuss problems between the students and the Adminis- trators, and to give needed information on all stu- dent activities. During the year Student Council organizes the Homecoming festivities, sponsor ' s Beach Night, Student Council Week, and special activities. The Student Council holds elections for student council officers with the use of voting machines and class officers as well. Benefit causes that the student council assists include needy families with the Thanksgiving Baskets, Doll and Toy Fund, Unicef, Muscular Dystrophy, and March of Dimes. Team members have participated in many tour- naments, games, and championships. At these various contests the club has represented West Jefferson very well by winning many awards and much recognition. The competition includes math games called On-Sets and Equations, Eng- lish games called Linguistiks and Propaganda, and Social Studies games called Mr. President and Ameri-EuroCard. Members of the club have to excel in one or all of the fields of English, Math, or Social Studies to make one of the teams. Mem- bers learn a great deal throughout the competi- tion, which lasts from October til April. They learn how to compete well with others. They learn how to win and lose gracefully. They learn how to meet new people and challenges. Also they learn a great deal about Math, English, and Social Studies. It is the goal of the team members to reach the Academic Olympics held at the end of the school year, usually in Kentucky, Tennessee, or Georgia. At the Olympics students compete for national titles. Over the years, West Jeff students have won several titles. Mrs. O ' Brien and Mrs. Delaune serve as head sponsors to this useful organization. 1st Row, Left to Right. FBLA helps stu- dents to become active in student leadership, to meet people their own age from other areas in the state and country, and to participate in various com- petitive events involving business subjects. Home Economics The dynamics of American culture have brought about many changes in the role of the male as related to personal, home, and family life. Home Economics at West Jefferson offers courses geared to motivate the student in per- sonal development, food and nutrition, money management, housing, dating and entertaining — to name a few. The students shown in the pictures are in lab exercises. The young men learn survival skills in class. In one of the pictures they are learning the correct techniques in measuring. In the Foods I class members learned the typi- cal answer to Creole cooking — first you begin with a roux. The young men enrolled in the classes find this study most beneficial and have nothing but praise for the course and their instructor. 258 Physical Education The goal of the physical education program is to provide a varied physical education and recre- ation program that helps build strong, healthy bodies, encourages participation in sports, assist in the attainment of individual athletic profici- ence, and stresses team work and good sports- manship. The physical education program includes physical fitness, volleyball, touch football, health and first aid, basketball, track and field, table ten- nis, softball, golf, tennis and horseshoes. The regulation W.J. High School gym suit must be worn during all classes in physical education. The suit must consist of red gym shorts, white T- shirts, with a red trim, white socks and tennis shoes. 259 Science The Science Department offers a wide variety of science courses suited to the needs and interests of the students at West Jefferson. Physical Science is offered to the ninth grade and Biology to the tenth grade stu- dent. These are the two courses in science required for graduation. After the completion of these two courses Chemistry, Physics and Advanced Place- ment Biology are offered for the college- bound students. Practical Chemistry, Practical Physics, Marine Biology and Oceanography are offered for those students with special inter- ests in the science areas. All of the science courses listed above are laboratory oriented with emphasis on expe- rimentation and participation by the student. 260 Industrial Arts The Industrial Arts department is a vital part of the West Jefferson curriculum. There are three areas of the Industrial Arts program. In the mechanical drawing division, students learn how to draw and to read drawings in the first year of study. In the second year, the stu- dents learn to make and to read blueprints. Woodworking students construct such objects as benches, trophy cases, cedar chests, gun chests, etc. Classes are offered in automobile as well as other motors. Mr. Edward Bischoff, the department coordina- tor, said he was pleased with the outstanding work of the students in the department this year. 261 Resource Program The purpose of the Resource Program is to extend each student ' s skills and knowledge through individual instruction and to facilitate academic adjustment in the regular school cur- riculum. The sixty students participating in the program attend resource classes for a minimum of one hour each day. Remidiation and tutoring activities are provided for each student in a non-competi- tive learning situation to increase over all lan- guage and math skills. 262 Mathematics The Mathematics Department offers an exten- sive choice of courses. All of the traditional sub- jects are taught, such as algebra, geometry, and advanced mathematics, as well as an advanced placement college-level course in calculus. There are also a number of electives available to the students, including Industrial Mathematics, Mathematics for Daily Living, Career Mathemat- ics, and Consumer Mathematics. All of the courses are offered in sequence, with one-half unit of credit being awarded upon suc- cessful completion of each semester ' s work. 263 Resource Center Good News! After many hours of shifting, rear- ranging, and adding book shelves, the library has permanently settled on the second floor of the 400 ' s building. The big move was worthwhile, for we now have working area, with room to expand. Even more good news! The audio-visual department will soon be receiving some new equipment. Cassette player-recorders, projectors have been purchased and should be in use before the end of the school year. 264 Social Studies The Social Studies department offers the stu- dents a varied selection of eleven courses. Three courses — Civics, United States history, and the most recent addition to the curriculum, Free Enterprise — are required for graduation. The eight electives are World History, Geogra- phy, Career Education, Native American Studies, Criminology, Sociology, Psychology and Eco- nomics. The social studies department is staffed by one head, Geraldine Moody, and is the second largest department in the school. The CLOSE-UP program which is sponsored by the department offers an opportunity for the West Jefferson students to visit Washington, D.C., for a closer look at the structure of our national government. 265 Eric Hess Russell Plasczyk ADMINISTRATION Mr. O. As I walk through the halls of West Jefferson for the last time, I begin to remember the many events of the year. Starting with the nerve-racking Miss West Jeff. Pageant and ending with the clos- ing pages of the 1979 Buccaneer yearbook. The yearbook was an experi- ence as well as a lesson in itself. From the opening 16 pages to this final page, I have many people to thank for devoting their time and effort to this yearbook: Mrs. Anite Currault for teaching me these last three years, Mrs. Brignac for giv- ing when needed, Mrs. Bush for assisting us with financial matters, even though she was swamped with her own work; and especially Ms. Johnson for putting up with my own mistakes when there were only hours before a deadline. The staff and I have tried to pic- ture as many different people as we could and hope we have been successful for your enjoyment in years to come. And before closing these pages, I would like to thank all faculty and administration as well as students for their cooperation in complet- ing The Buccaneer. W. R. Holman III editor-in-chief
