Each man's joy is joy to me Each mun's grief is my own We need one another. john Dorme This need for one another expresses itself in many ways, but we have chosen to show it in terms of unity- unity of the activities we shared, the sports we enjoyed, the studies we pursued, the friendships we made and the memories we hold. It is not easy to write of things that are actually in being, between a past that is only beginning to lengthen into distances and a future that is still unknown. Events move quickly, and living things change even while they move. However, to us even this movement is unified as we leave a thankful past and embark toward a joyful future. To ble of Contents Administration Faculty Seniors ' VV Sports Activities Underclossmen Q Directory' Mr. Steve Zawyrucha, we gratefully dedicate the 1960 Fore 'n Aft to you. Few people so uniquely combine the qualities of an inspiring teacherg however, as our coach, and teacher you display those qualities which we would like to develop within ourselves. Perhaps the characteristic which draws you so close to us is the spirit of enthusiasm which you bring to all activities. This spirit is reflected in your love for your fellowmen, your respect for each individual and your understanding of our many adolescent perplexities. You shall live with us in deeds, not yearsg in thoughts, not breathg in feelingsg not in figures on a dial. A S ,f rr f 'Uh T, x vv I sf J f l Q h ll Harry Weinstein Charles XV. 'EF J I STEERING COMMITTEE Judy Horton, Joyce Zydowski, Karen Browne, Alexis Vitali Rob Roy, Mike Sichel, Fred Salazar, Frank Perrini D Because we are not complete in ourselves, we depend on memories and experiences shared with others. The endless links and ties which we have forged bind us together as we recall our congregations at jahn's after games, and our gatherings at open-house parties during which we paid visits to Ruppert alias Personality alias Sweetstuff who eats a thinking man's cigarettes. Captroe holds moonlight memories for many of us-who can forget the beach parties, flashing lights on the bridge, the O.B.I., the road under the draw bridge, or the causeway to Parking Field 9 at jones Beach? Our activities have been full and diversified, ranging from the strong political group led by a rabid senior to Civil War debates with a Confederate Rally of bugles, banner and BANTER. We were always overly active on away- from-school jaunts, especially when we dropped the ilashbulbs from the top floor of the Museum of Natural History and when we departed dejectedly from the French cinema. These were vexing moments for our teachers, Mr. Dwyer and Mr. Berzon. But perhaps not as stimulating as the reactions of Dr. Marquadt to the trembling turtle in his desk drawer and the wiggling frog in his briefcase, nor as bold as locking Mr. Ford in the art closet. Other teachers also have con- tributed to our well of memories with: l'm loveable, I'm a crackpot, but l'm a genius. -Mr. Plumer, I may not always be right but l'm never wrong. - Mr. Finng Due to Ferrel's Law and other factors. --Mr. Weisenreider. Mr. Hall and his bear baiters g Mr. Zawyrucha, his Aces g Mr. Plumer, his pogo stickg Mr. Berzon, his little bellg Mr. Backlund, his alligator George and Mr. Edmunds, his occasional nap during rehearsals. A few of our teachers, who shall remain anonymous, will remember the penetrating aroma of the hydrogen sulfide gas, the bourgeois math problems, the dummy on the front porch, the multilation of the flower bulbs, the secret panels in Parkwood School, low water fountain in Secatogue, air-conditioned bathing suits in the high school, appetizingQ?j cafeteria activities and the senior who arrived three hours late for a Biology Regents. Our memories are warm and varied, but they all add up to BO F F O. Two of our highly successful ventures were our class plays. ln our junior year under Miss St. Claire Anderson's capable direction we enthuiastically pro- duced You Can't Take It With You. This initial attempt proved so satis- factory that in our senior year as seasoned thespians we were ready to under- take Jenny Kissed Me. This well-received endeavor guided by Mr. Plumer was rich in off and on stage experiences. Proud are we of our musical seniors, our metal and electrical specialists, our athletic stars, our Betty' Crocker winners, our academic record consisting of 5 Certificates of Recommendation from the National Merit Qualifying Test, 7 Regents Scholarships, 5 alternate scholarships and an Engineering Scholarship which we leave as a torch to those who follow. STANDING: Coach Wille and Coach Brown. The 1959-60 swimming season was the most successful in the history of the water sport here at West Islip. This was accomplished by three years of hard work, determination and skill, on the part of the West Islip Mariners. Records were broken, undefeated teams were defeated, and former champions were dethroned. The over-all record for the year was 13 wins, 2 defeats and 1 tie. In Nassau-Suffolk league competition the Blue and Gold were undefeated. This was climaxed by the winning of The Long Island Swimming and Diving Championships. Outstanding were the performances of George Vehstedt and Ken Campo, undefeated all season, Craig Reubens 400 and 200 yard freestyle champion, Bill Chalich backstroke champion, Norman Horan and Al Geyer in the breast stroke, Vincent Kublin in the butterfly, the speedy performance of Pete Raynor in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, and Captain Ray Campo in the individual medley. The fast freestyle relay of Burt Schwartz, Bob Lehrfeld, Jay Losee and Dave Bradley posted the fast time of 1:43:5 against Pol Pre . yThe Iinedley relay of Bill Chalich, Vincent Kublin, Norman Horan and Tommy David posted the fastest time in the cham- vionshi as. I Thlis great team was well supported by the swimming of Dick Berman, Chuck Reimer, Bob Schumacher and Dan Zawyrucha, Bob Matherson, team manager, greatly assisted Coach Brown in keeping detailed records of the Lion Speedsters. Next year West Islip will lose the services of Captain Ray Campo, Pete Raynor, Craig Reubens, Jay Losee, Dave Bradley, Rod Rose, Al Geyer, Tom David and Burt Schwartz. .4 C Ken 4 BOYS SWIMMING 'K' Bert Tommy Da e Al Dlck Pete 1 Ill Ill! 1 fu. This feat was anticipated as the team had won the two previous meets with Brentwood. Uniondale had been defeated once and tied once by West Islip's accomplished swimmers. Hard work and spirited determination under Miss Virginia XVunsch's competent supervision plus the interest and advice of Miss Dora Metrelis were responsible for the team's success. To close a rewarding season a team dinner was held in the school cafeteria at which Coach Brown spoke about the aspects of swimming as a career. In two non-league games West Islip lost one game and tied one. The Lions fought for and won the first League game with Brentwoodg how- ever, our second encounter was with Port Jefferson whose powerful machine proved to us that it was superior. Although we won our third League game, our opponent, Northport, certainly pushed us around. When the next game was played with South Huntington this team definitely caught us napping. A win over Linden- hurst renewed our morale, which slid back when we lost the last League game to Huntington. The two non-league games record a loss to Bay Shore in a fumble recovery in the last minutes of play, and a tie with West Babylon. Bob jones he 1 .-e. In League Two competition the Lions placed second with a 7 win-3 loss record. To offset the loss of six graduated lettermen, Coach Zawyrucha and the boys worked feverishly to get the team in shape for our first league encounter with Amityville. Our victory over Amityville was hard won in a very close game 4-5. The next game we dropped to Bay Shore 3-1. However, after that defeat we went on to win 5 league matches in a rowg Copiague, West Babylon, Northport, Sayville and South Huntington went down before the West Islip Booters. The Brentwood game was the season's climax as a victory over the strong Brentwood team would tie the Lions for the league championship. A large crowd assembled at the Brentwood field to witness the battle for the championship. The game was well-played as well as hard-fought, but the Brentwood Booters were too fast for the Lions. The final score stood Brentwood -5, West Islip -2. Capturing third place in the county proved the prowess of the spike shoe brigade. New school records were set in each event except the broad jump and the high jump. Out- standing were the following performances: Bob Millen's mile 4 :30g Wayne Neilsen's 2:07 half mileg john Factora's hurdling and sprintingg Al Synder's 220 yard run: 23.93 Al Bahlert's shot-put 50'3 , disc 148, Frank Balajadia's 440 yards: 53.5g and sprinting, Al Synder's 220 yard run: 23.9g Al Bohlert's new hurdle records and Ed Squire's mile was close behind Bob Millen's. In the A2 League, West Islip captured fifth place, and in the A Meet, fourth place. The Cross Country team had a disappointing season be- cause of a poor turnout. With only six boys on Varsity and no jayvee team the barriers were at a decided disadvantage running against schools with varsity teams of twenty or more members. The lone victory was scored against Brentwood, the only school having a team similar in numbers. With the savvy attained this year and hopes for a larger team enroll- ment in the fall, Coach Dwyer can look forward to a more eventful season in 1960. Its record of eleven wins and nine losses is a good one in lieu of the inexperience on the part of many of the boys. Sixty-live lads turned out for varsity and junior varsity wrestling, some of them for the lirst time. However, as the season wore on, many of these boys became first-rate grapplers. The top men on the team during the regular season were: Briant Notine, beaten only once and Bob Factora, beaten twice. In the A-1 League Tournament, the Lions came in seventh. It is in- teresting to note that many of the deciding matches were very close and could have gone either way. Briant Notine and Bob Factora finished second in the Tournament Meet. In the Suffolk County Tournament West Islip fared better when the team placed seventh out of twenty-four competing schools. Briant Notine won his class and Bob Factora fin- ished third. Congratulations are due Coaches Duart and Holborow who again expertly and enthusiastically guided another successful wrestling team. but ,qv -,if ..V GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Two teams from each of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades were chosen to participate in the girls' volleyball intra-mural. A team composed of senior girls won the championship. At the South Hunting- ton Playday a West Islip honor team reached the semi- finals. Having won the first two games the gals enter- tained high hopes. Unfortunately they lost the third game to Babylon. Doris Petri was the unanimous choice for the most outstanding player. Top row left to right: Richard Briggs, Ray Lanning, Bob Sanacora, George Krenkel 2nd row: Bob Butts, Royce Waterman, Noel Perry 3rd row: jim Specht As of March 1, 1960 the Bowling Team was in first place, with three matches and a tournament remaining for March competition. Under Coach Mario Vitali's supervision the team practices every Monday at the Captree Lanes. Led by Roy Bloomquist, the team members expect to continue their winning pace and go on to first place. Led by George Stanton, the golf team had its finest season. Con- sistent fine playing by veteran Richy Briggs and freshman Bob Lehr- feld were responsible for winning the first ten matches. Dependable performances by Dick Berman, Richy Christianson contributed great- ly to the team's success. In the county tournament the team placed third and George Stanton was runner up. With the loss of George Stanton by graduation, a veteran team will take to the links this year. When the Lions lost their final game to Port jefferson, an optimistic attitude, Wait till next year, was evident. Throughout the season the team fought hard to overcome handicaps. With the return of only one letterman and few players who had some jayvee experience, Coaches Ward and Zawyrucka quickly had to develop the available talent. This green team played opponents strong with veterans who provided tough competition. The two wins over West Babylon and the victory over La Salle Military Academy did boost morale, but the Lions lacked the strength and the height necessary for success. Because all sports programs are initiated to teach players how to lose as well as how to win, the Lions profited philosophically when they learned that Circumstances are the rulers of the weak, they are but the instruments of the wise. rx' l 4 1 X -3.6 fx 5, M. ,453 'iv 2. Schedules were drawn up for weekly games and each class was represented by two teams. So high did enthu- siasm run that the girls made blue and gold numbered pinnies as a surprise for the coaches. A blue and gold basketball was used for warm-ups. An honor team, captained by Marcia Root, was selected for playday at Northport. Unfor- tunately we drew the championship team as our opponent. With the cooperation of the athletic department and the work of the officers, the Council was able to offer a G. O. card with all the advantages of last year's card at only half the previous price. The Council in conjunction with the junior High Council sponsored two concerts featuring the Babylon Chorale. The proceeds of these concerts have been used to form the nucleus of a Student Aid Fund to help needy students of our school. During the football season the Council initiated a system of chartering buses for away athletic events. Because of the popularity of this program, we were able to provide transportation to every away football game. Popular demand fostered the purchase of a mascot lion suit which is expected to liven up all athletic events, and contin- ued enthusiasm sparked the purchase of an elegant blue and gold ban- ner to decorate the gymnasium. The Council was also able to organize an effective system of chartering and advertising clubs. Regularly projects, such as awarding pins to student having 90070 averages and donating food baskets to needy families, have been con- tinued on a larger scale than in previous years. The officers and representatives are proud of the council's enroll- ment in the United Schools of Western Suffolk, a group which dis- cusses and tries to solve common school problems. To our patient advisor, Mr. Huettl and Messrs. Coulter, O'Donnell and Beck we are grateful for their generous cooperation and needed advice in making this a successful year. Most of our problems and successes this year ran parallel to pre- vious ones, however, the staff of 1959-60 instituted several changes. More profit-raising events QWe remember The Long Gray Line, the concession stands, and the spring play, Kind Ladyuj helped the treasury this term. Faced with the possibility of only six issues, the staff was determined to earn money for an extra issue, and we did achieve this end through much hard work and cooperation. Experimenting with a new idea, The Rudder reduced the flag on the front page for more news space and a better looking page. Mixed attitudes met the change, but eventually the different front page format was accepted with pleasing comments. The Editorial Board of The Rudder believes that experimentation is the key to forward move- ment towards a continually improving high school paper. fWe only hold our breath and say a little prayer each time something new is tried., The presses roll each year and as graduating staff members vacate their positions, upcoming reporters and editors turn out an improved finished product . . . and as each year merges into another, The Rud- der becomes firmly embedded in the life of West Islip School. In December, playing the traditional holiday songs and carols, the band presents its annual Christmas Concert. In April the band again offers concert music for the much appreciated Spring Festival. Thus the members practice diligently in order to make West Islip's Second Aquacade as successful as the initial show in '59 which was such a notable performance that Coach Brown took the show on the road. At the Southward Ho and Centereach Country Clubs the show was enthusiastically received. This year's stars are expecting to play to two full house audiences in our own pool. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Plumer a strong foundation was laid for the dramatics program at our school. The basic yearly program will consist of two full-length plays for public presentation, two short plays to be presented to the school body at an assembly program each semester, participation in the Shakespeare Festival at Hofstra College, and various field trips to attend community and school productions on the Island. Through working together with other members, each member of the club has fully enjoyed himself whether he was being smeared with grease paint, rehearsing on the stage, or constructing scenery in the catacombs. As part of the program, special workshops are conducted by Mr. Plumer in directing, make-up and scenery design and construction.
