A very warm and hearty thank-you We each say to you, and We pray the good Lord up above Will guide you by His Hand. Zhe Cog Of Zhe Class Of 1958 In September, 1954, thirty-one travellers, called Freshmen, set out on a four-year journey that has almost come to an end. The first lap was spent getting the feel of the road. Their leaders were Bobby Dunbar, head, Leah Williams, Betty Sears, Margaret Credle, and Evelyn Wheeler with Mrs. Pauline Berry, advisor. Realizing they would pass this way but once and wanting to get the most out of their high school journey, the Freshmen joined several travellers clubs in¬ cluding FFA, FHA, and the Glee Club. Christine Sadler, Betty Simmons, Patricia Swindell, Evelyn Wheeler, Leah Williams, Lynn Roberts, Dorothy Ann Cuthrell, Bobby Dunbar, and Charles Jarvis spent their extra time playing basketball; while Betty Sears, Sally Ann Harris, Nathan Sears, and Bill Griffin spent hours practicing and leading yells. During the Freshmen year, Sally Ann, Delbert Cahoon, Edna Earle Pittman, and Joseph Spring took side roads and left the group completely. Thus, in September, 1955, there were only twenty-five traveller s to begin the Sophomore lap of the journey. Their leaders were Betty Simmons, head, Myla Baum, Thomas J one s , Rena Sparrow, Patricia, and Bill with Mrs. Sarah Campbell, advisor. Thomas, Patricia, and Bill joined the Beta Club and sidetracked for a four-days detour to the Beta Convention in Asheville. Perhaps the most en¬ joyable stop for all was the Sophomore-Senior party. Linda Gibbs and Christine took side roads to matrimony and did not continue the journey with the Class of ' 58. In 1956, the travellers were separated at a road block in the main highway. At Engelhard, Myla and Patty Carawan played basketball; Myla was the class treasurer; Myla, Woodley, Thomas, Betty, and Patty were in the class play J uke Box. They really enjoyed the short stop to plan and decorate for the Fairyland Junior-Senior. Lynn, at Belhaven, was in the Beta Club and FTA and played basketball. At Swan Quarter, Doris, head, Dorothy Ann, Margaret, Patricia, Sandra, and Bobby were the leaders; and Mrs. Iberia Tunnell, con¬ ductor. Evelyn joined the Beta Club. Highlights included editing the Reflector , attending the State Fair, presenting Good Gracious, Grandma, taking a four- days detour to Washington, D.C., and giving the Seniors a Garden Party. Shelby Sawyer and Leah took the side road to matrimony. In September, 1957, nineteen of the original travellers reunited and set out on the fourth, last, and busiest lap of the four-year trip. The leaders were Lynn, head, Myla, Margaret, Patricia, Bobby, Evelyn, and Bill. Mrs. Carolyn Harris was along to give much needed advice. They stopped to select their class rings, to edit The Quarterian , and to present Hot Ice. On October 25, they stopped in at the Halloween Carnival and saw Thomas Jones and Doris Raburn, crowned King and Queen. The Seniors held their own in basketball; while Sandra, Doris, Myla, and Frances led the yells. The Senior s are now looking forward to reaching their destination. Graduation. At this great intersection they will leave the caravan, and each will go his separate way on life ' s wonderful journey. Historians: Bill Griffin Betty Simmons Thomas Jones 15 Prophecy Of Class Of 1958 News flash ! The Seniors of West Hyde will be the first people to use Dr. Sputnick ' s new wonder machine--an amazing device which has the power to search into the future, reveal the hidden, and make known the secret. Naturally excitement is high as the Seniors await the arrival of Dr. Sputnick and his futuristic machine. However, a hush falls over the group when he arrives and sets up the machine, and they become spellbound at the scenes revealed by the Sputnick mechanism. First, a classroom appears and the faces of little children show that they are very much interested in what the teacher, Myla Baum, is saying. She always did have a way with children. We see Margaret Credle in Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount, and we know that she is the best loved nurse by many of her patients. Appearing next is a scene of a busy telephone office in the Pentagon building. There, Dorothy Ann Cuthrell, looking happy and satisfied, is supervisor over twenty-five operators. In the next scene we see a throng of people gazing at a plane that has just landed. From the cockpit step Leland Harris and Charles Jarvis. They have just completed testing another of the new jet planes. Then we see Dewey Sawyer, who is head mechanic in charge of school buses at Hackney Bus Co. in Wilson. For Dewey, there ' s no other job like it. Next we see a lovely room of socialites where several young wives are to¬ gether for bridge. Two of them are Frances Ann Williams and Patty Carawan. As again the scene changes,we see an interior decorator redecorating the Empire State Building. She is almost covered in material. Look again, it ' s Patricia Swindell. And thenworking in the fourth dimension, as it were, we find ourselves in a Chinese classroom where Doris Raburn is teaching English to the Chinese children. A country church comes into view. At the door we recognize Bill Griffin shaking hands with each per s on and accepting humbly, That was a fine sermon, Preacher. Suddenly, excitement fills the air as the winning car races over the finish line at the Indianapolis Speedway. Who could the driver be but David Mason! Another scene in Washington, D. C. This time in the FBI building where Thomas Jones, head of fingerprinting, engages Betty Simmons, secretary, in dis cus sion. Nextwe see Evelyn Wheeler briskly typing manuscripts for a famous writer. Close by is her Coast Guard husband. In Hollywood we discover Lynn Roberts with Oh, no, it can ' t be, Elvis Presley! Butitis.and with him are his children. We see it. Lynn is a tutor. As the future unfolds,we see Dr. Robert Dunbar, M.D., coming out of the examining room at Walter Reid Hospital. Following him is the President of the U. S. Viewing further we see Sandra Jennettee busy in a conference with some of the leading designers of the world. Sandra is introducing a new style in fashions. Next we see what appears to be a village. But, no, it ' s only a tourist court. It must be Woodley Sadler ' s since the name is The W . Sadler Court . Will Dr. Sputnick ' s invention be a success: Read this prophecy again in ten years to find out.
