CLASS HISTORY In September 1952, the state consolidated the Swan Quarter, Sladesville, and Fairfield High Schools at Swan Quarter, Entering high school were thirty-four Freshmen--seven from Slades- ville.nine from Fairfield, and eighteen from Swan Quarter. Freshmen high lights included the State Fair, initationin FHAand FFA, and class trip to More- head City, North Carolina. Athletics, also, took on a new meaning for the Freshmen. Mary Louise Gibbs and Anna Mae Harris played on the girls’ team, while Buddy Wheeler , Glenn Cutrell, Wayne Berry, Z. B. Midyette, Billy Joe Cutrell and Jim¬ my Brickhouse started on the boys’ team. The Freshmen lost four members: Dorothy Ange who is now Mrs. Ralph Williams, Victor Jennette, Royce Gibbs, Bobby Ray Sanderson, and Tim Berry. Class officers were: Roger Allen Spencer, Treasurer; Elizabeth Sparrow, Presi¬ dent; Polly Berry, Secretary; Wayne Berry, Re¬ porter. Z. B. Midgette honored the Freshmen Class by being chosen Carnival King. When school reopened in September, 1953, the ‘Greenhands” became the silly but yet confident Sophomores. Thirty eager students were now ready to really “aquaint” themselves with the school and teachers. Important activities and people were gaining prominence during the Sophomore year. Polly Berry became a cheerleader, eleven new Beta Club members included: Frankie Baynor, Sybil Swindell, Billy Joe Cutrell, Polly Berry, Dale Sadler, Evalena Gray, Elizabeth Sparrow, Gracie Carawan, Claudia Carawan, Dorothy Gibbs, and Roger Allen Spencer. The Sophomores were hosts to the Seniors at a party, and Alice Cuthrell, Anna Mae Harris , Ruth O ' Neal, and Dor othy Gibbs served as waitresses at the Junior-Senior Ban¬ quet at Mattamuskeet Lodge. The Sophomores attended the State Fair and the Carolina-Mary¬ land football game at UNC. They also had the pleasure of studying in the new classrooms. In athletics, a baseball team was formed which included; Buddy Wheeler, Donald Credle, -Z. B. Midyette, Leslie Simmons, Nelson Watson, Billy Joe Cutrell, Glenn Cutrell, Roger Spencer, and Ed. Roy Cuthrell. Basketball teams included: Mary Louise Gibbs, Sybil Swindell, Anna Mae Harris, Wayne Bell, Wayne Berry, Buddy Wheeler, Z. B. Midyette, and Roger Spencer. Manteo, North Carolina was the spot for the class trip. Dorothy Dawson became Mrs. Alfred Gibbs, Evalena Williams became Mrs. Douglas Gray and Lois Ann Sanderson from Engelhard was admitted to the class. Billy Joe Cutrell moved to Florida. Class officers were: Roger Spencer, President; Billy Joe Cutrell, Vice President; Polly Berry, Secretary; Elizabeth Sparrow, Trea¬ surer; and Gracie Carawan, Reporter. Finally ending Sophomore days, twenty-eight students rose to jolly, competent Juniors in Sept¬ ember 1954. The following class officers were elected: Gracie Carawan, President, Glenn Cutrell Vice President; Dale Sadler, Secretary; Frankie Baynor, Treasurer;and Roger Spencer, Reporter. Athletics was holding its own, while the Sopho¬ more group remained to be victorious. Elizabeth Sparrow was added to the girls’ team. Polly Berry was elected Chief Cheerleader. Highlights in¬ cluded ordering class rings; presenting the class play,“For Pete’s Sake”; editing the school paper, the Reflector; attending the Carolina-Wake Forest football game at UNC, and last, but not least, the Junior-Senior trip to Washington, D. C. Elizabeth Spar row became Mr s. Char lie Keech,and Evalena Gray moved to Norfolk, Virginia. When the twenty-four seniors returned to school in August 1955, their school had been changed from Swan Quarter to West Hyde High School. Wayne Berry, Nelson Watson, enrolled at East Hyde High School at Engelhard while Jim¬ my Brickhouse was sent to Columbia. Three other members were separated from the class-- Donald Credle, Walter Mann, and Dorothy Gibbs. Polly Berry was again elected C hief Cheerleader. Josephine Raburn became Mrs. Z. B. Midyette. Le slie Simmons married Audrey Fisher, and Lois Ann Sander son became Mrs. John Carawan. Art¬ hur Bell Gibbs became a member of the sophisti¬ cated Senior Class. Highlights included editing The Quarterian, receiving class rings, and pre¬ senting the class play, “A Feudin’Over Yonder.” Class officers were: Glenn Cutrell, President; Alice Cuthrell, Vice President; Polly Berry, Sec¬ retary; Anna Mae Harris, Treasurer; and Dale Sadler, Reporter. As these chronicles go to press, the Seniors are looking forward to their goal--graduation. After receiving their diplomas May 22, 1956, each individual will write his own history by his deeds.
