Merlin Carawan CLASS HISTORY In September 1952, the state consolidated the Swan Quarter, Sladesville, and Fairfield High Schools at Swan Quarter, Entering high school were thirty-four Freshmen--seven from Slades- ville.nine from Fairfield, and eighteen from Swan Quarter. Freshmen high lights included the State Fair, initationin FHAand FFA, and class trip to More- head City, North Carolina. Athletics, also, took on a new meaning for the Freshmen. Mary Louise Gibbs and Anna Mae Harris played on the girls’ team, while Buddy Wheeler , Glenn Cutrell, Wayne Berry, Z. B. Midyette, Billy Joe Cutrell and Jim¬ my Brickhouse started on the boys’ team. The Freshmen lost four members: Dorothy Ange who is now Mrs. Ralph Williams, Victor Jennette, Royce Gibbs, Bobby Ray Sanderson, and Tim Berry. Class officers were: Roger Allen Spencer, Treasurer; Elizabeth Sparrow, Presi¬ dent; Polly Berry, Secretary; Wayne Berry, Re¬ porter. Z. B. Midgette honored the Freshmen Class by being chosen Carnival King. When school reopened in September, 1953, the ‘Greenhands” became the silly but yet confident Sophomores. Thirty eager students were now ready to really “aquaint” themselves with the school and teachers. Important activities and people were gaining prominence during the Sophomore year. Polly Berry became a cheerleader, eleven new Beta Club members included: Frankie Baynor, Sybil Swindell, Billy Joe Cutrell, Polly Berry, Dale Sadler, Evalena Gray, Elizabeth Sparrow, Gracie Carawan, Claudia Carawan, Dorothy Gibbs, and Roger Allen Spencer. The Sophomores were hosts to the Seniors at a party, and Alice Cuthrell, Anna Mae Harris , Ruth O ' Neal, and Dor othy Gibbs served as waitresses at the Junior-Senior Ban¬ quet at Mattamuskeet Lodge. The Sophomores attended the State Fair and the Carolina-Mary¬ land football game at UNC. They also had the pleasure of studying in the new classrooms. In athletics, a baseball team was formed which included; Buddy Wheeler, Donald Credle, -Z. B. Midyette, Leslie Simmons, Nelson Watson, Billy Joe Cutrell, Glenn Cutrell, Roger Spencer, and Ed. Roy Cuthrell. Basketball teams included: Mary Louise Gibbs, Sybil Swindell, Anna Mae Harris, Wayne Bell, Wayne Berry, Buddy Wheeler, Z. B. Midyette, and Roger Spencer. Manteo, North Carolina was the spot for the class trip. Dorothy Dawson became Mrs. Alfred Gibbs, Evalena Williams became Mrs. Douglas Gray and Lois Ann Sanderson from Engelhard was admitted to the class. Billy Joe Cutrell moved to Florida. Class officers were: Roger Spencer, President; Billy Joe Cutrell, Vice President; Polly Berry, Secretary; Elizabeth Sparrow, Trea¬ surer; and Gracie Carawan, Reporter. Finally ending Sophomore days, twenty-eight students rose to jolly, competent Juniors in Sept¬ ember 1954. The following class officers were elected: Gracie Carawan, President, Glenn Cutrell Vice President; Dale Sadler, Secretary; Frankie Baynor, Treasurer;and Roger Spencer, Reporter. Athletics was holding its own, while the Sopho¬ more group remained to be victorious. Elizabeth Sparrow was added to the girls’ team. Polly Berry was elected Chief Cheerleader. Highlights in¬ cluded ordering class rings; presenting the class play,“For Pete’s Sake”; editing the school paper, the Reflector; attending the Carolina-Wake Forest football game at UNC, and last, but not least, the Junior-Senior trip to Washington, D. C. Elizabeth Spar row became Mr s. Char lie Keech, and Evalena Gray moved to Norfolk, Virginia. When the twenty-four seniors returned to school in August 1955, their school had been changed from Swan Quarter to West Hyde High School. Wayne Berry, Nelson Watson, enrolled at East Hyde High School at Engelhard while Jim¬ my Brickhouse was sent to Columbia. Three other members were separated from the class-- Donald Credle, Walter Mann, and Dorothy Gibbs. Polly Berry was again elected C hief Cheerleader. Josephine Raburn became Mrs. Z. B. Midyette. Le slie Simmons married Audrey Fisher, and Lois Ann Sander son became Mrs. John Carawan. Art¬ hur Bell Gibbs became a member of the sophisti¬ cated Senior Class. Highlights included editing The Quarterian, receiving class rings, and pre¬ senting the class play, “A Feudin’Over Yonder.” Class officers were: Glenn Cutrell, President; Alice Cuthrell, Vice President; Polly Berry, Sec¬ retary; Anna Mae Harris, Treasurer; and Dale Sadler, Reporter. As these chronicles go to press, the Seniors are looking forward to their goal--graduation. After receiving their diplomas May 22, 1956, each individual will write his own history by his deeds. Histo rians: Sybil Swindell Claudia Carawan LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-six of West Hyde High School, in the County of Hyde, the State of North Carolina, being in per¬ fect mental condition, and realizing our impending departure, do hereby make this, our last will and testament, rendering null and void, any former wills that may be made by us. Lots of words will rhyme, Cecelia. Roger Spencer wills his scholastic ave¬ rage to Bennett Emory. Just a little bit more studying and the Beta Club will have another boy, Bennett. Lupton, our class advisor, as sole executer of this, our last will and testament. In witness whereof, we the Senior Class of 1956 do set seal on this, the twenty-second day of May, in the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty- six. Item 10. Lois S. Carawan leaves her quietness to Christene Sadler. More of that could be used around school. Testator: Roger Allen Spencer CLASS PROPHECY In 1956 the Senior Class stepped from the last rung of the school ladder and entered on another ladder of life’s ambition. It is now the night of the class reunion in 1966. As they all sat around having a jolly time, each one told where he was on the ladder of his ambition and what he had been doing since graduation in 1956. Polly Berry’s greatest desire has come true and she is head nurse at Duke Hospital, Durham, North Carolina. She always was competent. Alice Cuthrell was there with her usual smile. Her hair looked very chic in the latest French style, but it has to be as she is a top hair designer at the Waldorf in New York. The world’s champion typist was with them, too. Mary Louise Gibbs has set a new record of 145 words a minute. She is traveling around the country demonstrating the Royal Electric Type¬ writer. Senorita Armstrong and Lois Ann Carawan were very happy. They had both married and had new modern homes in Hyde County. They told of the ha ppenings at home. The most fashionable lady present was Anna Mae Harris. As dress designer for Marilyn Mon¬ roe, she has kept up with the latest styles. The Notre Dame football team has been un¬ defeated for the past five years, but they should be with Edward Roy Cuthrell as their coach. Zeke and Josephine Raburn Midgett are living at Cherry Point, North Carolina. Zeke is a lieu¬ tenant in the Marine Corps and Josephine is em¬ ployed as a personnel worker at the base. Mechanical Engineering has claimed two of the ‘56 graduates. Arthur Bell Gibbs and Wayne Bell are working in the Diesel Engine Plant in Chicago. Since graduation, Gracie Carawan has taken an accounting course and is a CPA. She is em¬ ployed as a state auditor now. Leslie Simmons has been most successful with his dairy. It is now the largest in the United States. Leslie developed the milklon material everyone is using for sheer summer dresses. One of their most ambitious girls, Elizabeth Sparrow Keech, has traveled all over the world with her Air Force husband doing secretarial work wherever she was. Now she knows ten different languages. Roger Allen Spencer came back to Hyde County after receiving his agricultural degree from State College. He has been very successful with his farm, one of the largest in the county, and has shared his knowledge to help the other farmers. Claudia Carawan was still courteous as she says “number please,’ in her position as a tele¬ phone operator. This is just a part-time job for her as she is an industrious house wife living in Washington, North Carolina. In her very modest way, Ruth O’Neal informed them she was giving a piano concert in New York next month. She did not waste her talent--Good luck, Ruth. Dale was employed by the American Air Lines in Washington, D. C. She worked at any job they gave her, secretary, bookkeeper, or hostess. She enjoys the variety of her work. She was always good at any job. Frankie Baynor, home economcis teacher at East Carolina College, drove down with Sybil Swindell who is head of the history department there. The College President couldn ' t replace these two. The reunion was almost over when Mrs. Frost- ie Lupton arrived. She is busy with her family now and doesn’t have much free time. But her arrival made the reunion complete and she was so happy to see everyone and to know her class had been so successful. Prophetesses: Josephine Raburn Midgett Lois Ann S. Carawan Anna Mae Harris Two late arrivers came in wearing Yankee suits. The famous players were Glenn Cutrell and “Buddy’’ Wheeler. As an architect, Junior Harris’artistic ability has proven useful. He has just finished The Oct¬ agon Building for the President. ■?.
