That would, of course, be rather discouraging to the chairman of the committe unless, she, also, were too busy to attend. But, I thought, how interesting if on the morning of the reunion eachabsentee sent a telegram in which was stated the sender’s occupation |and reason for absence, and how very interesting if their telegrams were collected in a little book and passed about so that all the class member s might get first-hand information about the others. I became so engrossed in the idea that I even pictured myself the exact wording of the telegrams the various people would send. Would you like to hear them ? Civil engineer. Tunnelling Rockies to shorten trip for Hollywood commuters. Signed: John Brickhouse You nocice John used just ten words and no more. Careful as ever, but I’ll bet it ' s a good tunnel. Own dress shop and design clothes for the best dressed women in country. Having fashion show tonight. Signed: Margaret Baynor I’m sure Margaret is very good at this because she always dressed so well while in high school. As an astronomer, am studying the heavens at seashore with beautiful girl assistant. Star¬ gazing date to-night. Signed: Victor Jennette Still at his old tricks, you see. Am usher in big movie theater. Only way to see all shows. Signed: Barbara Sadler And she probably enjoys the picture the twentieth time she sees it, as wellas the first. There’s a girl who really loves her work. Keeping a pet shop. Specialize in eels, ichneumons, and elephants. Sorry can’t come tonight; expecting new shipment of Japanese beetles. Signed: Patricia Baum Well, at least, she said she was sorry she couldn ' t come. Am a farmer. Raise winter wheat and summer squashes. Can’t come because am busy with harvest. Signed: Frank Fortescue There’s something queer about that, but I ' m not just sure what it is. I suppose Frank is a very scientific farmer and knows all about rotation of crops and everything. I wonder if he raises shorthorns? I never can remember whether they are cows or turnips, but he probably raises them anyway. Am a Chautauqua lecturer on “Beauties of Nature,” and “The Value of a Smile.” So sorry can’t come; the “Smile” due to-night. Signed: Metta Carawan I always knew Metta would do something like that. But where she learned about the beauties of nature I’m sure I don ' t know. When we last saw her, she didn’t know parsley from peppermint or toads from tadpoles. She must have been doing a lot of reading lately. Am a steam riveter. Like the quiet atmosphere. Am putting nuts in new sanitarium, so can’t leave. Signed: Ted Cahoon Ted, always a quiet chap. I am positive he is the most refined steam riveter in the business. Am wire dancer in circus. Have performance tonight. Can ' t come. Sorry. Signed: Marlis Sears Marlis was always a good dancer. I’m sure that she is one of the most clever wire dancers in che world. What a salary she must get ! Being an architect, I am designing filling stations and halls of fame for the government. Working overtime at big pay. Signed: Ben Blake If he works at all, he’s getting big pay. What he receives for overtime is beyond my imagination. The government has my sympathy. Am author of two of the six worst sellers up to date. Must finish a third by the first of the month so have to miss reunion. If any of you carry a spare plot with you, please loan it to me. Need one badly. Signed: Jimmie Spencer I always knew Jimmie would be famous. Didn’t you? Think of two worst sellers and another one on the way! Am happily married. In leisure time, give bridge lessons, Am starting a series of evening dancing classes tonight, so am unable to attend reunion. Signed: Christene Cox Christene always was an industrious person and incidentally she hasn’t changed any. She didn’t tell us what she was doing mornings. Surely she doesn’t waste them. Perhaps she takes in wash¬ ing or gives boxing lessons then. Just joined Navy to see the world through a porthole. Shall think of you. all in every port, as I walk through the slums and see the peculiar people. Signed: M ack Carawan I don’t think he meant that quite as it sounds , but merely that he would be homesick in those queer places and wish to see his friends. Mack is so ambitious he ’ll probably be an admiral by the time the fleet gets to Manila. Am private secretary to the head of a huge corporation. Boss was born crazyand hada relapse. Won’t give me time off to come to reunion. I shall write all his letters backward for a week. Signed: Betty Mann That poor man! What she ' ll do to his correspondence! You remember, she never did let any¬ one impose on her. I wonder if she spells any better than she used to or worse. No, she couldn’t spell worse. Am elementary school teacher in my hometown. Impossible to come because was hit on head by one of my pupils. Signed: Monna Lou Carawan Perhaps Monna Lou should start teaching in high school. Am Home Economics teacher at Swan Quarter High School. Have Open House tonight. Signed Hazel Credle Hazel should make a very good Home Economics teacher, since she has had personal experience in taking care of her family. As for me, I wonder if my telegram would read like this: Am working with FBI, busy tracing down criminal at large. Signed: Audrey Smithwick I always dreamed about working with the FBI, but never thought I would be tracing down crimi - nals. These are the telegrams I imagined you would send and you must admit they do sound like you. Here’s hoping you’ll all be as successful as they say you are, ten years from now. Prophetess: Audry Smithwick CLASS HISTORY In September 195 1,Sladesville, Swan Quarter, and Fairfield High School teacher s were in for a big surprise. Entering high school were 22 students with big ideas, not knowing what to expect. But they learned quickly; it only took them two days to find out. Outstanding activities of the Freshman year included going to the State Fair, class parties, FFA and FHA initiation, and class plays. The Sladesville Freshmen attended the Junior-Senior Banquet at Saleeby’s. Barbara Sadler, Patricia Baum, Betty Mann, Dorothy Berry, Marlis Sears and Ben Blake made the Fairfield basketball teams. Christene Cox, Margaret Bay nor , Audrey Smithwick, Monna Lou Carawan, Donald C r e d 1 e , Mack Carawan, and John Brickhouse made the Swan Quarter teams. Hazel Credle made the team at Sladesville, During that year two classmates left. They were Nora Alexander and Dorothy Berry, who later became Mrs. James Midyette. During 1952,the state saw fit to consolidate Fairfield, Sladesville and Swan Quarter schools at Swan Quarter. With the help of the Swan Quarter students and teachers the Fairfield and Sladesville groups readily felt very much at home. Thus began the Sophomore year with 20 members in the class. Again Mack Carawan, Thomas Sherill Harris, Audrey Smithwick, Christene Cox, Metta Carawan, Hazel Credle, Marlis Sears, and Betty Mann made the basketball teams. Two of the cheerleaders were Sophomores, Sandra Potter and Joanne Simmons, chief. In January, the group welcomed Margaret Baynor, who made the bas¬ ketball team, and Shelby Spring. The highlights of this year are, the party entertaining the Seniors after their class night exercises, going to the State Fair, and the class trip to Hatteras, N. C. The class regretted losing four classmates. Thonas Sherill Harris joined the U. S. Army; Joanne Sim¬ mons became Mrs. James Best; Dorothy Sawyer became Mrs. William Equils and thelby Spring. Finally finishing Sophomore studies, sixteen members rose to be sophisticated Junior s. When school reopened in September 1953, the Juniors eagerly awaitedthe chance to enter the new school building. They elected the following class officers: Jimmy Spencer, president; Betty Mann, vice-president; Monna Lou Carawan, secretary; Christene Cox, treasurer; and Margaret Baynor, reporter. After many hours of riotous laughter and struggling practice they finally succeed in giving the Junior play, “Oh, Promise Me! directed by Mrs. Marina Baum. One day quite unexpectedly they had the privilege of selecting class rings. This class had the honor of providing the composers of school song, Metta Carawan, Audrey Smithwick, and Marlis Sears. The Mattamuskeet Lodge was beautifully decorated wita a “Garden of Tomorrow scene for the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The most enjoya ble event wa s the class trip to More head City and Fort Macon. Metta Carawan, Audrey Smithwick-Captain, Christene Cox, Betty Mann, Margaret Baynor, Mack Carawan, John Brick- house, and Victor Jennette made the basketball teams again this year. An outstanding accomplish¬ ment was the sponsoring of the school paper, “Reflector. Two other members left school. Milton Pittman, one of the few boys, left soon after Christmas, and Ola Dodge moved to Norfolk, At the end of the year the entire class found upon the bottom of report card, “Promoted to grade twelve!” So dawned the Senior year destined to be one of the outstanding years of class history. A new member, F rank Fortescue, was added to the class and all seventeen were back to take up their studies. These officers were elected to lead the Seniors: Jimmie Spencer, president; Mack Carawan, “Veep; Christene Cox, Secretary; Margaret Baynor, money squeezer; and Metta Carawan, reporter, Soon after, the annual staff was named with Betty Mann editor-in-chief. About the second week of this school year the Seniors became proud wearers of the school ' s first standard ring. At Hallowe ' en, because of their aggressive campaign their own Ma rgaret was crowned “Carnival Queen. After¬ school hours became the time for many play practices and the class was very happy with the pre¬ sentation of the Senior play “In Again ! Out Again ! directed by Mr s . Carolyn Harris. This year Metta Carawan, Audrey Smithwick, Christene Cox, Margaret Baynor, Hazel Credle, Mack Carawan, and Betty Mann-Captain, made the basketball teams again. Many long hours of hard work were spent on the Quarterian to make it the best year book published. Much consideration was given in the se¬ lecting of invitations, caps and gowns, By a unanimous vote the class decided upon white caps and gowns with red tassels. The social event which will long be remembered is a Junior-Senior Banquet at which the Juniors so graciously entertained with good food and much fun. The two great events the Seniors are looking forward as these chronicles go to press are a trip to Washington, D. C. and graduation. With graduation--the receiving of diplomas --the history of the class of 1955 as a group will end. After May 27, 1955, each member will write his own history by his future deeds.
