Foreign Exchange Srudenrs Wesr Hopkins was forrunore ro hove rwo foreign exchange srudenrs rhis year. This is rhe firsr year rhor Wesr Hopkins has become home for srudenrs from rwo counrries, Spain and Norway, or rhe some rime. Joaquin Dringos (or Kin os we Americans know him) is from Mararo, Caralunya in Spain. According ro Kin, rhe people and cusroms in America ore very differenr from Spain. He rhinks high school and educorion in general in America is easier. Time, ro him, is passing quickly and he is having a good rime. Kin is good friends wirh o foreign exchange srudenr from Spain who arrends Norrh Hopkins. Livor Klingsheim is visiring us from Norway. He lives fifreen miles our in rhe counrry beside Sravanger in Norway. He agrees wirh Kin obour differences berween our counrry and his counrry. Livor soys he likes Wesr, bur changing classes, os we do, is very differenr ro him. He finds ir hard ro undersrond some reochers. He enjoys going ro concerrs, parries, and rhe mall He plans ro arrend college in Norway and ro major in engineering. Livor says rhe rhing he hos enjoyed mosr abour America so for was Halloween. :—' Genesis 17 18 Gene$ s Governor's Scholars The Governor's Scholars Program offers our- sranding high school srudenrs inrellecruol and personal challenge. The program brings rogerher many of rhe srare's brightest stu- dents for five weeks of intensive study, dis- cussion, research, and recreation. The sru- denrs, preparing for their senior year in high school, join in inrellecruol give-and-roke with a relented faculty and with some of the nation's most gif red writers, scientists, busi- ness leaders, and orhers. The Governor's Scholors live in dormitories on a college cam- pus with tuition, room and board provided free of charge. Governor Martha Layne Collins sponsors rhe program in partnership with Kenrucky corporations and founda- tions. Rebels In Washington West Hopkins had two srudenrs that mode trips to Washington D.C. this summer. Peggy Carter won on essay contest and recieved an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. hosted by Henderson-Union R.E.C.C.. All en- trants srorred or Frankfort for tour of rhe state capital and then two win- ners from each district were selected. These winners went on to Washing- ton D.C Jeremy Wilcox attended a Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. In Washington D C., Jer- emy heard many speakers such os Sen. Robert Dole, Sheila Cast of ADC News, and several other interesting people. He studied topics such os na- tional defense strategies, foreign poli- cy,and arms control and disarma- ment. Doth students got ro see much of Washington D.C. induding rhe Capi- rol and severol national monuments. The week in Washington D.C. will be one remembered and cherished for a long rime. My experience with rhe Governor's Scholars program was, in some ways, just as educational as all my school years.
