SOCIAL STUDIES THE BASIC ROLE OF THE SOCIAL STUDIES The basic role of our social studies program is to provide the motivation, understanding, knowledge, and skills necessary for effective citizenship in the United States. We feel that each individual, regardless of abili- ty, is involved in experiences that are beneficial in learning to live with others. Also it would be ideal if each pupil developed an understanding of the basic principle of democracy to the extent that he she would become a useful, patriotic citizen. The social studies program is intended to offer opportunities for each pupil to develop: 1. An understanding of his responsibility in help- ing to perpetuate our democratic society. 2. Knowledge of how to recognize and successful- ly deal with prejudice and propaganda. 3. Knowledge and understanding of the physical and social conditions that exist in the world. 4. Knowledge and appreciation of the rich social, political, and economic heritage that belongs to the people of the United States. 5. A sense of loyalty or patriotism to the prin- ciples upon which the government of the United States is based. 6. Skills, habits and attitudes that are essential to the social studies and to good citizenship in a democratic republic. 12
