ENGLISH — LANGUAGE ARTS The Language Arts program at West Hopkins offers many opportunities for learn- ing. There are programs of solid basics in French and English and opportunities for fur- ther enrichment and intrinsic reward in other Arts. The French program is two years and fulfills a requirement in the foreign language area for an academic diploma. Classes con- centrate on French grammar and an awarness of the French people and their culture. The English program can be a four year comprehensive one, encompassing grammar, American and British literature, reading and composition. Courses of an artistic nature are not re- quired for any diploma but are interesting and fun. West Hopkins offers Band and Chorus as four year programs and Art as a three year program. There are contests in each of these areas which provide a challenge to the student and allow him to win prizes, scholarships and recommendations for his work. Through its Literature program West Hopkins has made great strides and hopes to enlarge the program in the future. BUSINESS VOCATION AL The term “Cooperative Business and Voca- tional Education Programs” refers to a program of vocational education for persons, who through a cooperative arrangement between the school and employers, receive instruction, including re- quired academic courses and related vocational instruction by alternation of study in school and on-the-job training in a related occupational field. The basic purpose of the Cooperative Business and Vocational Education Program is to prepare students for useful employment in an occupa- tional field of their choice. The Vocational Department is participating in a new curriculum program this year. Com- pentency Based Vocational Education is a new approach to individualized learning. Homemak- ing tasks that have been identified, are tasks that each student should successfully accomplish by the end of their Senior year. MATH SCIENCE The faculty of the math department feels that all students should be taught the basic principles of mathematics. In conjunction, the student must also be prepared to apply these basics to their everyday needs. We feel that a student who is not prepared to adulthood will not be adequately prepared for college or vocational studies involving the application of fundamental mathematics. We try to stimulate students to become ac- tive in mathematics and to apply their skills in a consumer type atmosphere. We feel that once they do initiate their skills, they will soon be rewarded by the respect of their families and peers, thus completing the learn- ing cycle. The earlier this primary reinforcement oc- curs, the sooner the student will begin his next learning experience in mathematics; thus, one successful learning experience leads to another. The Science Program at West Hopkins consists of General Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This pro- gram is designed to meet the needs and in- terests of the students of West Hopkins and to fit the capabilities of the teachers.
