The basic purpose of the Cooperative Business and Vocational Education Program is to prepare students for useful employment in an occupa- tional field of their choice. The Vocational Department is participating in a new curriculum program this year. Com- pentency Based Vocational Education is a new approach to individualized learning. Homemak- ing tasks that have been identified, are tasks that each student should successfully accomplish by the end of their Senior year. Loretta Crowe Tana Aldridge Debbie Duncan Sherry Smith Alice Carroll Randall Hollis Wayne Clark Marion Gill Dwayne Vinson 8 ENGLISH — LANGUAGE ARTS The Language Arts program at West Hopkins offers many opportunities for learn- ing. There are programs of solid basics in French and English and opportunities for fur- ther enrichment and intrinsic reward in other Arts. The French program is two years and fulfills a requirement in the foreign language area for an academic diploma. Classes con- centrate on French grammar and an awarness of the French people and their culture. The English program can be a four year comprehensive one, encompassing grammar, American and British literature, reading and composition. Courses of an artistic nature are not re- quired for any diploma but are interesting and fun. West Hopkins offers Band and Chorus as four year programs and Art as a three year program. There are contests in each of these areas which provide a challenge to the student and allow him to win prizes, scholarships and recommendations for his work. Through its Literature program West Hopkins has made great strides and hopes to enlarge the program in the future. Maribellc Cole Alice Parker Carolyn Ridenour Katherine Simons Debby Hoodcnpyle Linda Bearden R. H. Pruitte MATH SCIENCE The faculty of the math department feels that all students should be taught the basic principles of mathematics. In conjunction, the student must also be prepared to apply these basics to their everyday needs. We feel that a student who is not prepared to adulthood will not be adequately prepared for college or vocational studies involving the application of fundamental mathematics. We try to stimulate students to become ac- tive in mathematics and to apply their skills in a consumer type atmosphere. We feel that once they do initiate their skills, they will soon be rewarded by the respect of their families and peers, thus completing the learn- ing cycle. The earlier this primary reinforcement oc- curs, the sooner the student will begin his next learning experience in mathematics; thus, one successful learning experience leads to another. The Science Program at West Hopkins consists of General Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This pro- gram is designed to meet the needs and in- terests of the students of West Hopkins and to fit the capabilities of the teachers. The science offerings meet the requirements of the State Board of Education and the Southern Association of Schools. Don Clayton Mike Crowe Mike Duncan Jewell Logan David Jessup Sherley Sisk HEALTH P.E. The Health and Physical Education Department strives to contribute to the mental, emotional, and physical development of the individual. Through a variety of ac- tivities, one learns competencies in various group and in- dividual sports in which sportsmanship, cooperation, and a competitive attitude are developed. The Health and Physical Education Department com- bines both work and play in the educating and practicing of habits which contribute to a healthy and physically fit individual. Gayle Davis George Dever Doug Harris SOCIAL STUDIES THE BASIC ROLE OF THE SOCIAL STUDIES The basic role of our social studies program is to provide the motivation, understanding, knowledge, and skills necessary for effective citizenship in the United States. We feel that each individual, regardless of abili- ty, is involved in experiences that are beneficial in learning to live with others. Also it would be ideal if each pupil developed an understanding of the basic principle of democracy to the extent that he she would become a useful, patriotic citizen. The social studies program is intended to offer opportunities for each pupil to develop: 1. An understanding of his responsibility in help- ing to perpetuate our democratic society. 2. Knowledge of how to recognize and successful- ly deal with prejudice and propaganda. 3. Knowledge and understanding of the physical and social conditions that exist in the world. 4. Knowledge and appreciation of the rich social, political, and economic heritage that belongs to the people of the United States. 5. A sense of loyalty or patriotism to the prin- ciples upon which the government of the United States is based. 6. Skills, habits and attitudes that are essential to the social studies and to good citizenship in a democratic republic. 12 THE SPECIALISTS Ruth Martin Guidance Counselor Phillip Noel Resource Room Barbara Hollis Librarian Gee, does anyone know where the cash register is? PRINCIPAL — GARY MORGAN It’s the aim of the administration and faculty of West Hopkins High School to make all students welcome and to assist, guide and inspire them in the development of their full potential as an individual. We hope to provide a school curriculum, along with other school activities, which will meet the needs and desires of all pupils and which will give them an opportunity to live, work, and grow with a feeling of security in a free democratic environment. 14 PERSONNEL Charlotte Ethridge Secretary Hilda Lamb Records Clerk Marsha Adcock Charlotte Lutz Teacher’s Aides 15 17 21 22 23 24 26 mmtE «e.Awe® an® «®«1N «EASBSN Most Valuable Best All-Around Mike Scott and Tressa Johnson Todd Goodakcr and Slcnda Johnston WHO’S WHO SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — L. to R.: Karla Brown, Sec.; Tressa Johnson, Vice-Pres., Shala Lynn, Treas., Tami Mercer, Student Council Rcprc.; Laura Dever, Pres.; Tim Traylor, Sgt. of Arms.
