HOME - VISITOR Darlene Martin Sponsors: Mr. Bcshear Miss Gill Mr. Noel The West Hopkins Rebels and Rebeletts experienced a banner year in 1978. At the beginning of the calendar year, “the year of the Rebels and Rebeletts” was heard through- out Hopkins County. The Cry prevailed as the Rebels were champions of the Three Rivers Conference the first time in the school’s history. The Rebeletts were the Three Rivers Conference Tournament Champions, 7th District Champi- ons, and the 2nd Regional Champions which marked there first trip to the State Tournament as well as the school’s first. Needless-to-say, as with all great teams one must have great support, as the West Hopkins Pep Club provided so many times during the year. The Pep Club with the aid of so many loyal supporters truly exemplified the spirit and dedi- cation which followed the “Champions” in 1977-78. At the end of the season the Rebel cheerleaders and Pep Club was awarded the Pat Dooley Pep Award for the most school spirit from among all the second region participants. Such trips are excellent ways to learn the culture of a country and improve foreign language skills. Two such trips have been made within the last five years with four West Hopkins students participating. These two- to five-week summer trips are sponsored by educational travel agencies and include visits to four, five, or six countries per trip: France, Eng- land, Italy, and Switzerland, and, also, the Netherlands and Ger- many. Mrs. Ridenour (French instructor) and her husband make all arrangements and chaperone the group. Students usually stay in high school and college dormitories where they obtain a real-to-life view of European life. Class ses- sions are held in each country to further inform students of the customs, government, etc. of the respective countries; sometimes high school or college credit can be received for such trips. What a great way to study history, culture, geography, government and languages.
