THIS IS THE HOME OF THE REBELS THE REBEL 1971 VOLUME IX WEST HOPKINS NEBO, KENTUCKY i To us, the Flag symbolizes the same spirit felt by our ancestors. We exhibit this spirit in our daily lives. Our causes may not be as noble as the ones for which our ancestors fought. We still tackle them, however, with the same spirit and the same need for achievement that our ancestors had. This, then, is why we d e d i c a t e the 1970 Rebel to the Rebel Flag. X There is a difference! No matter what shape your tummy is in . . . I use Zest, and I bet I'm cleaner than you. You got more than I did! 4 Look Ma, no hands! Some of us have it and some of us don't. Stingy! Bang, bang! 5 6 Mr. and Miss W.H.H.S. JONATHAN TYLER and JANIE COFFMAN JANIE COFFMAN was cheerleader for four years. Her senior year she served as captain of the cheer- leading squad and also as president of the Student Council and FHA. Janie was a true Rebel. JOHNNY TYLER was on the basketball squad for four years. He was active in many clubs and during his senior year was Vice-President of the Pep Club in which he had a chance to show his true Rebel Spirit. 9 The Wittiest And The Friendliest EDDIE PROW and RAMONA FULLER RITA BLANCHARD and BARRY COX Most School Spirit And Most Athletic TONY WILSON and CAMILA CORN TREMAN DOWNS and BRENDA MESSAMORE I! During 1969-70 a Teens Who Care Organiza- tion was formed at West Hopkins. This organi- zation consisted of about 30 members under the presidency of Janet Carroll. The club had several projects during the year, parties at Outwood, sponsoring a child at Out- wood, Christmas caroling at Nursing home, Christmas party at the hospital, participating in the Health Career Day at the hospital, and other activities. We also attended the state con- vention at Louisville. This year we have 84 members with Diane Wilson as president. At the beginning of the year the club was presented with a Parents Mag- azine award for outstanding work. The club plans to attend the state convention again this year and we are looking forward to a better year in 1971-72. 77 D.A.R. Award Janice Edminston was nominated by her classmates and voted on by the faculty to receive the annual DAR award. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edminston of Nebo, Ky. This award, which is sponsored by the local chapter of DAR, is based upon integrity, honesty and character. Janice and the other recipients from the high schools in this county were presented the award at a tea given by the local chapter of the DAR. Betty Crocker Award Patricia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Larkins, Princeton, Ky., achieved the award by making the highest score on a written knowledge and attitude examination related to homemaking. This examination, given to all the Senior girls in this school, is sponsored by the General Mills, Inc. in their national search for the homemaker of tomorrow. The Betty Crocker search is planned to help achieve the following goals: 1) enhance the dignity and pres- tige of the American home, 2) stimulate interest in homemaking and 3) emphasize the contributions to the home being made by high schools and their teachers. 78 Fall Festival King And Queen Doggies? Cheerleaders are then required to maintain at least a C average each six weeks. Upholding a C average is not always an easy task since many hours are spent in practice, in addi- tion to the time spent backing the Rebel team. These girls proved their practice time was worth- while by winning second place in district cheer- leader competition and advancing to regional competition where they were runners-up among all squads in the second region.
