THE REBl EL West Hopkins High School Nebo, Kentucky Volume II FOREWORD The 1964 REBEL invites you to a journey through West Hopkins High School. The staff purposes to give you a picture of our activities, classes, organizations, students, and faculty - a story told in pictures and words of our work, our play, and our goals - a story of a school dedicated to make tomorrow’s accomplishments better than today’s achievements. It is the hope of the graduates that those left behind will gain a thorough knowledge for a worth-while purpose. It may be that a green freshman will be a doctor, a silly sophomore may be a future chemist, or a jolly junior may be a lawyer. Time holds the key to the future achievements of our school. Our school was built for the purpose of obtaining a much-needed education with its first run for this race beginning last year. With the help of the parents, teachers, our community, and the desire for this goal in each student's heart, our race will be a success. This book is the finishing touch to our high school career. To present the cherished memories of our high school days from fading, we proudly present THE REBEL. In years to come, this book will bring back the joyous events and trying mo- ments in the classroom and on the field. With these thoughts in mind we dedicate this edition of THE REBEL to . . . MR. AND MRS. JEWELL LOGAN For their devotion to their vo- cation, and for the interest they have shown in the individual pupil and the entire student body, we, the Rebel Staff of 1964, dedicate this second edition of THE REBEL. Mr. Logan is a science teacher and has served as coach, while Mrs. Logan teaches in the Business De- partment. They have one son, Jim- my, age two. Both Mr. and Mrs. Logan sponsored our class this year and have been of infinite help to us. May their future years of teaching bring immeasurable satisfaction and happiness. ADMINISTRATION A. O. RICHARDS, Principal This has been a very successful and progressive school year for West Hopkins. I have enjoyed it im- CAROLYN JACKSON mensely, and have realized a great amount of satis- School Secretary faction from the accomplishments made. It is to the efforts of our highly professional and dedicated faculty, along with our other efficient school employees, that I attribute much of this success; however, the fine young men and women who compose our student body have, through their initiative, cooperation, loyalty and genuine school spirit, been responsible for many of our accomplishments. Especially do I wish to com- mend the senior class for their courage and worthy conduct in discontinuing the unbecoming sneak day. By so doing, they have established a precedent of be- havior exemplary for future classes. For this and for the many other outstanding accomplishments our students have made, I express to them my sincere gratitude and highest commendation. A. O. Richards FACULTY BUSINESS ESMER WYATT The Business Department offers six busi- ness subjects for vocational and personal use. This year 104 different students were enrolled in business classes. A new electric type- writer and adding machine were purchased during the year for use in the business depart- ment. Today, when such great emphasis is placed on science in the secondary school curriculum, the Science Department of West Hopkins assumes a position of increas- ing importance. Our objectives include the study of the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of life and how they apply to our daily activities. GARY RIDEOUT JEWELL LOGAN SCIENCE ENGLISH The Language Department offers a diversi- fied program for all students. In addition to the regular four years of English, a student may take Dramatics, Speech I and French I. The state Department of Education requires three credits in English for graduation but we maintain that the students’ needs are greater and try to influence everyone to make the most of his opportunities. GARY MORGAN Today, more than any other time in our society, students as well as adults are in need of more physical and recreational acti- vities. We strive to provide for the student exercises, group games, and individual games, that he may carry on when he has finished his stay at West Hopkins. The Physical Fitness Program that has gained great acclaim over the nation is given to students twice each year, with the hope that it’will motivate students to do their best. PHYSICAL EDUCATION SOCIAL STUDIES GEORGE DEVER The purpose of the Social Studies Depart- ment is to help the student leam, think, and plan to live in our local, state, national, and international societies. To accomplish this large but urgent goal, our students are study- ing these subjects: United States history, world history, civics, geography, sociology, economics, and international relations. R. H. PRUITT E The Music Department offers classes in general music, band, and chorus. Its purpose is to give students a contact with and appre- ciation for quality music. Some other ob- jectives are to provide an emotional outlet and to develop personality, poise, leader- ship, desirable social attitudes, self-expres- sion and creative ability. MUSIC MATHEMATICS The Industrial Arts Department offers several fields of interest for students. Draft- ing, woodworking, metalworking and crafts were included in the program this year. Next year, we hope to add more fields of work. Some of the main purposes include ex- ploration of these fields, development of basic skills, and development of good work- ing habits. The most important purpose is to train students to work efficiently, neatly and safe- ly regardless of what the job might be. ALETHEA CAMP The Math Department has two functions: to give to those students who plan college careers or professions the necessary background to do the calculations these professions re- quire, and to provide basic skills to all stu- dents in order that they may more easily con- duct daily business in the adult world in which we thrust them. INDUSTRIAL ARTS HOME ECONOMICS . The library serves as the center of the school curriculum and furnishes a place for students to do independent study in school. An attempt is made to furnish supplementary reading and research materials for every de- partment. Through reading and study the students may gain an insight to all phases of ancient and modern life. Books, magazines, and newspapers are selected from the suggestions of the princi- pal, the teachers and the students with the approval of the librarian. The Vocational Home Economics Depart- ment at West Hopkins has been established with the belief that education for home living is important for all. The curriculum is based on the needs and interests of the pupils and their homes. Helping students to recognize and analyze problems in terms of the values involved is an important purpose of home economics. The ninety-five students enrolled this year are studying all seven areas of homemaking. These areas include child care, foods and nutrition, housing, management, health and safety, clothing, and relationships. The home economics program also included participation in home projects by students, and visits to students' homes by the teachers during the three weeks following the end of school. A DAY AT WEST HOPKINS The school secretary's work is never less than that of the teachers'. Both teachers and students rely upon her for information and tasks which must be performed for school to continue. The bell rings, and students rush to their classes Although there is little time between classes, and find a seat. They must - because the tardy friends find a chance to exchange hellos. bell rings after five minutes and if you're late . . . Well, Mr. Richards will see to that! Keeping a school organized is a big task, and Mr. Richards does it well. Students rush to the concession stand when it's possible. Conces- sions are only sold once during school hours, so before- and after- school openings are always crowded. All students gather in the audi- torium once a week for an assembly program. The “Freshman Initiation provided humorous entertainment for one week. School isn’t all dull moments; there are a lot of fun ones, too. Hard-working students are always hungry when it's time for lunch. The line is long, so everyone hurries to be first. Immediately after the bell rings at 2:30, students begin to load the buses, completing another day of school. The 2:30 bell rings and the hall is cluttered with students rush- ing to their lockers. Here they gather books and coats so they can be on their way home. Many students have to wait for the second The last buses finally arrive at 3:30 to buses because everyone can't ride the first carry all waiting students home, ones. These boys wait and try to pass the time by listening to some music. The day is ended for most students, but not for the coach and his basketball team! These hard-working boys are often found still practicing at 6:00 P.M. After all, practice makes perfect!
