BANTAM WATER-POLO This year the bantam water-polo team did well. When the boys played, co-operation and a spirit of good sportsmanship were evident, although the final results were not startling. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Jardine, for coaching and preparing us for our games. He was behind us at all times. Scott Conrad SENIOR A SOCCER W.H.H.S. began the 1955 season by virtually knocking off Mount Royal 3-1, and 2-1 in two exhibition games. In high spirits we defeated Baron Byng 3-2 in our first regular season's game. Then, however, we suffered a close 3-2 loss against Montreal High, who went on to win the championship. In successive games, we ma- naged two wins and three losses and ended the season in fourth place. Top scorers for the Red and Grey were Gene Woerner with ll goals, and John Raudsepp with six. Shipton, spectacular in the nets, earned shutouts against Mount Royal 3-0 and Strathcona 4-0. The play of Captain Lawrence Doczy, Scholtz, Freund, Christiansen was also outstand- ing, while the rest of the squad played well. Our tireless coach, Mr. Wilson, did his best to make footballers out of these here chaps in his first year at West Hill. Employing the European method of no substitutions he succeed- ed in fielding one of the school's better teams in recent years. John Raudsepp, XI-D JUNIOR SOCCER In Junior Soccer this year Mr. Robertson's team led by their captain, Smith, got off to a slow start. They had a poor year, winning an exhibition game only, while the seniors had more luck. The boys practised in good and bad weather under the able coaching of Mr. Robert- son and once almost pulled the upset of the year by nearly defeating Rosemount High, the league leaders. Despite some bad luck, the boys played Well and gave some of the other teams a few anxious moments. Their playing was always fast and furious and even though they didn't win any league games, they enjoyed every moment of it, and their spirits never dimmed. Next year, though, we are looking forward to a better season. Ron Rutherford. SENIOR A HOCKEY This year West Hill had one of the poorest hockey seasons in a long time. The team played six games and came out on the short end of the score five times while tying Loyola 3-3 in the other. We dropped our first game to Verdun 4-0. In the next two games we were beaten 5-0 and 10-3. The team then tied Loyola and went on only to lose to McGee 9-0, Verdun very narrowly beat us 3-2, in what later turned out to be our last game of the season. The early finish was caused by the teachers' strike. Jimmy Ball was excellent in the nets, while Ian Henderson and Lou Duchesnay stood out on defence. Up front the forward lines played good, hard hockey, but neither good enough nor hard enough. On behalf of the members of the team, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Wood for the time and effort he spent with us this year. Kent DeGeer, XI-H JUNIOR HOCKEY The 1956 Edition of West Hill High School's junior hockey team came within an eyelash of winning the league championship, the eyelash consisting of the teachers' strike which forced the stopping of extra-curricular activities. Up to the time the squad was forced to drop out from competition, they had compiled an undefeated record and were firmly entrenched in first place. Standouts for the Red and Grey included Peter Lindsay, Milan Zipay, and Ian Macdonald, to mention but a few. The team wishes to extend its thanks to Mr. Pycock for the time he spent with the members. SENIOR A BASKETBALL Although this was not a successful season as far as the league standings were concerned, we all had an enjoyable year, abbreviated though it was. Led by Dave Silverstone, Lyle Suther- land, Larry Richards, Seymour Golden, and Eric Cohen, we played on even terms with Montreal High during the opening half of our first game only to lose out in the second half of the hard- fought contest. After a similar result in our next encounter, against Catholic High, we suffered a close six point defeat at Baron Byng. These games were followed by successive losses at Catholic High School and High School of Mont- real. Many thanks to Mr. Wood and Joel Richard- son for their attempts to form a winning ball club. JUNIOR BASKETBALL In a brief season of competition, the W.H. H.S. Juniors proved that they would be contend- ers. In the Western section of the league, the team got off to a quick start by defeating Mont- real West 35-19, and preceeded to defeat the remaining three teams Strathcona 41-38, Lachine 58-28, and L.C.C. 43-38, in the first half of a home and home series. Only the Lachine game was played at West Hill. The first half of competi- tion saw the team firmly entrenched in first place. Outstanding players were Dan Abramovitch, Steve Rosenoff, and Marty Blitstein. On behalf of the team I wish to thank our coach, Mr. Doyle, for helping us mould the team into a contender. Dan Abramovitch, Captain INTER-MURAL SPORTS The 1955-56 Inter-Mural sports programme, under the able supervision of Mr. Macfarlane and Mr. Wood, came to an abrupt and pre- mature halt in the middle of the hockey com- petition because of the teachers' strike.
