They as- sume they were successful - no lost par- ents have been reported yet! Students are selected for NHS by teachers on the ba- sis of grades, extracurricular interests, and leadership abilities. In the spring the current members honor the new mem- bers at the annual Initiation Banquet. Members of Badger Boys' and Girls' State had quite a memorable experience! When they first arrived on campus they were bombarded with rules and regula- tions and a schedule which was to keep them busy every minute for the next sev- en days. After that first two hour orien- tation period, they were all exhausted and wondering what they had gotten themselves into. Not to worry, though - things got better. The first full day was spent nominat- ing, campaigning and electing all city officials. The program was organized such that one floor of the dorm tabout fifty peoplel constituted a city, two floors were a county, and everyone made up the Badger State. The week was planned to teach students more about the different roles of government on city, county and state levels. They learned the duties of different positions such as mayor, alder- man, sheriff, senator, governor and many more. Elections progressed from city and county positions the first couple of days, to the final election of the State governor on the last day. Throughout the week they attended meetings and lectures about government. The real fun came, though, in learning how to get around some of the dull stuff and just have fun with new friends. It was definitely a week they will remember - not only because of all they learned, but because of the friends they made. X NHS-BADGER STATEX17

MATH TEAM CINKS The Varsity Math Team, coached by the infamous Don McCloskey, has an impressive and well deserved reputation. They consistently win local and state meets with astonishingly high scores. Many members, including Steve Shen, Michelle Wang, and team captain john Oghalai, are in calculus at this point or will be taking it in their high school years. However, it is not all work and no play for these young prodigies, as parties are held after every meet - with spirit added from mascots Concrete Chicken and Copper Pig. One may wonder at the farm animal terminology. The root of this custom is easily explained: the oink is said to resemble the grunts made when students encounter a diffi- cult problem. WISCDNSIN STUDE T CAUCUS Under the liberal guidance of Mr. Prugh, the members of Student Caucus meet in room 144 on Thursdays to, in essence, learn the way of the politicking world and to snack on the provided Oreos and carbonated drinks. These hardened cynics spend the majority of No- vember through March debating issues that fall into the categories of National Defense, Education, Economics, Foreign Affairs, Social 8: Welfare, and Law Enforcement 8: justice. During this period, they hope to prepare for the statewide meeting that occurs during April in Oconomowoc. During the meeting they will attempt to persuade the abundant, far right, smooth-talking students of conservative Wisconsin to accept ideas such as the distribu- tion of birth control within the schools and cutting down on defense spending. Three members, Jeremy Pierotti, Becky Sandefur and BJ Allen, have previously attended the Cau- cus. In the future, the club hopes to further the spirit of excellence at West by upstaging even the dreaded team from Stevens Point. PQR PEACE i U Students For Peace, formerly called Students for Nuclear Disarmament, work hard to educate the students at West about peace and to promote an in- terest in the peace related issues of our time. One of the group's major ac- tivities is organizing the Peace Week teach-in. Held in early February, it fea- tured numerous speakers and presenta- tions. In addition to peace Week, the SFP held a bake sale which raised a whole thirteen dollars and had a half price sale I on buttons promoting peace. ISXCAUCUS-SFP Row 1: Joshua Lawrence.
