WITI-II THESE Within these walls a lot goes on. The teachers work hard to prepare for their classes, and on occasion, the students work hard to prepare for their teachers. Academics have carried and always will carry a lot of weight at West - after all, after a week of intense scrutiny, we did win the National Award for Excellence in Education so we must be doing something right! If you think about it, we're pretty lucky to be at a school like West. How many other schools have an English Department that offers courses such as writing workshops, Theater, Mass Media, Shakespeare, Film study and Contemporary Literature, to name a very few? Most schools just have English 9, 10, 11 and 12. Seniors have the most choices as far as course selection goes. They can elect to take advanced business courses or new and different social studies courses such as social psycology, social issues, economics, current world affairs and philosophy. As a result, most students have no problem finding courses of interest to complete their graduation credits. Oh - credits. The class of 1986 was the first to be required to take 22 credits to graduate. Beginning with the class of 1989, students will need more credits of physical education, English, and computing. After filling these requirements, however, they still have many elective options such as auto mechanics, construc- tion, pottery or Allied Arts. There's no denying the classes at West are very diverse, appeal- ing to a wide range of students, many of whom hold different views of the school and its quality of education. It is these varying views that produce West's diverse student body, one which most would agree deserves its award of excellence.
