The Past Shapes the Future The struggles tor freedom which our forefath- ers endured are the concern of students in the American and world history classes ot Miss Kath- ryn Kohler, Mr. Raymond Quant, and Mr. Burton Hable. All three teachers keep busy with other activities at West besides their teaching. Miss Kohl- er is the advisor to the junior class, National Honor Society, and WSC. Mr. Quant is chairman of both the Social Studies department and audi- torium ticket sales. He is also the advisor to ln- ternational Club. Mr. Hable advises the senior class and is the head coach for varsity tootball and hockey. , fill wi iff! , will i i Mr. Quant, Miss Kohler, and Mr. Hable Past events are relived in World and Amer- ican history discussions. Four members ot our history department are Mr. Walter Wartolec, Mr. Michael DiBiase, Mr. James Lackore and Mr. Russell Paugh. Mr. Paugh coaches the baseball team, Mr. Lackore serves as ad- visor toxStudent Senate, and Mr. Wartolec is one ot theiadyisors to High-Times. Mr. Brockmeyer is an assistant coach to the varsity tootball team and head coach of the wrestling team. Mr. Byam, in addition to teach- ing history, is also the golf team coach. Miss Dakin, who teaches sophomores and iuniors, advises ski club. FACULTY 1 1

Vocal Talents Developed in Speech A ,f ii, twgtgw l ews, and Mrs. McCarty Mr. Farrand, Mr, Parker, and Mr. Crook 10 FACULTY Bwwjgtf Teaching how to vocally express ideas is the main concern of the members ot our speech department. Mrs. Ruth McCarty, along with her senior speech classes, also serves on auditorium committee and ad- vises National Thespians. Mrs. Ellyn Bryan is a new speech teacher. Mr. Thomas Tews, in addition to teaching speech, is also the advisor to Class Night, and stage crew. Mr. Tews directs both the Fall and Spring plays and also serves on auditorium commit- tee. The students ot Economics and Sociology classes study the basic structure of our society and the philos- ophies of capitalism, communism, and socialism. Mr. Charles Farrand and Mr. David Parker teach both Economics and Sociology classes. Mr. Richard Crook teaches Sociology and American history. Mr. Parker coaches the debate and forensics clubs and has charge ot the Herefurth speech contest. Mr. Crook is advisor to Student Forum. Lee takes a special interest in studying slides of protozoans

The system ot mathematics becomes more understandable to us through the teachings of Miss Cassie Raasoch, Mr. Neil Smith, and Mr. Orval Yaeger. Miss Raasoch teaches geometry, Mr. Yaeger teaches math l2 and algebra. Mr. Yaeger is also advisor to Math Club and a mem- ber ot the Statistical Committee. K Miss Matteson, Miss Beckerleg, and Mr. McCloskey. The world of numbers, proofs, and theorems presents a real and exciting challenge to the stu- dents ot Mr. Donald Loker, Miss Janet Herzteldt, and Mr. Eugene Leverentz. All three teach geome- try. Mr. Laker and Miss Herzteldt add algebra and trigonometry to their schedule. Mr. Leverentz teaches calculus and coaches our tennis team. 12 FACULTY The Sciences Challenge 4. Mr. Yaeger, Mr. Smith, and Miss Raasoch. Understanding basic concepts and using logical reasoning are important in the science ot mathe- matics. We learn these concepts with help from Miss Fern Beckerleg, Mr. Donald McCloskey, and Miss Janet Matteson. Miss Matteson also teaches physical science, and Mr. McCloskey served as Math Club advisor, lbefore taking a two year leave of absence to Nigerial. Miss Herzfeldt, Mr. Leverentz, and Mr. Loker.
