West's marching band took to the practice Held early in September and practiced faithfully three mornings a week in addition to regular class periods. These efforts produced half-time shows which added color to the football season. With the football season behind them, under the leadership of Mr. Ernest I. Stanke, conductor, the band set itself to preparing for the forthcoming concerts. The Winter Concert, on Ianuary 26, included the overture to Hltalian Girl in Algiers and Cowboy Reverief, As a solo Barbara Duwe played on the alto saxophone- Beautiful Colorado. Porgy and Bess selections highlighted the Pop Concert on March l4. Other numbers included La Rougetten which featured the harp of Vicki Vauk, Marianna, Waltzing VVinds, Agnew, and Flight of the Bumblebee, ' featuring the clarinets, flutes, and saxophones. The audience was enthusiastic over a novelty number-HMy Buddy played by Mr. McCloskey on a Water hose. The last appearance of the band of '58, the Spring Concert, was a great success. The band played Polka and Fugue from l'Schwanda , l'Fanfare and Allegro, and featured Concertino, a trio of the first three clarinets-Dave Peterson, Bill Dietrich, and Iim Nafziger. As the year came to a close, band members looked back on nine months of musical memories. Few would forget their experiences in playing in the pep bandn, at basketball games, and in pep auds. Kuescl. y ORCHESTRA Orchestra set to work immediately and began pre- paring for the October Pop Concert and the Decem- ber Winter Concert. They were prepared under the direction of Mr. Ernest I. Stanke. Gieg's Triumphal March from 'Sigerd Iorsalfar Suite' led off the Winter Concert program on Ian- uary 26. Also included in the concert were Matinees Musicalesi' and Belle of the Ball . Pianist Marcia Haville, a soloist, played the diflicult Concerto in G Minoru by Mendelssohn. This spring the orchestra went on tour to Nicolet High School in Milwaukee on April l. They had t'he following repertoire: First Movement of the Petite Suitev, Songs from South Pacific , Perpetual 22 CLUB Motion , Procession of the Sardar , and Tempta tion . While in Milwaukee, the orchestra toured the art gallery, a newspaper, and Nicolet High School. The Spring Concert-the final performance for the orchestra of '58-featured The Schuman Piano Con- certo in A Minor Qfirst movementj played by Ca- milla Haugeng a French horn solo, Morceau de Con- cert , played by Iohn Rafothg and Serenade , spotlighting the flute and string orchestra. Ianet Morton played as a flute soloist in this number. The concerts are not the only performances of the orchestra. They were asked to perform during intermissions of the fall and spring plays and to furnish music for the T-House of P.T.A. They also participated in the All-City music festival. Paddock. 24 CLUB W CLUB WU Club was established to promote a high stand- ard oli sportsmanship and to be of service in main- taining the efficiency and quality of the athletic program at West High. The club is responsible for such projects as sell- ing candy at basketball games, helping conduct the West Relays, and accommodating visiting athletic teams. The oihcers of W Club were Dick Yates, presi- dent, George Oosterhaus, vice president, and Iim Bakken, secretary. Mr. Iones advises the club. 4-F CLUB 4-F-Fun, Feather, Fin and Forestry-explains and instructs its members on conservation practice, game management, outdoor sportsmanship, and outdoor safety. Programs this year have emphasized phases of conservation and outdoor activities -- especially hunting, fishing, and gun safety. Highlighting the programs was a talk by a VVisconsin game warden, and several very colorful movies on Wisconsin Wild- life and outdoor sports. This year's ofiicers of 4-F were Craig Washa, presi- dent, Stuart Gordon, vice-presidentg and Victor Gal- lina, secretary. Advising are Mr. Christoffersen and Mr. Dowling. GIRL'S RIFLE CLUB Giriis RiHe Club was formed in order to teach girls how to use and care for guns correctly. The girls compete in marksmanship Within the membership and with other clubs. Target practice is held every Saturday morning at the University Rifle Range. Through these regu- lar practices club members are able to improve their ability in handling and firing firearms. Officers were Ian Bruhn, president, Margy Pin- ther, secretaryg Ioanne Paddock and Sue Baird, treas- urers. Mr. Tews is the adviser to this club.
