H may -aw M..-ff his .sv Administration To the Class of 1957: , Our school philosophy is based upon the ideal of making it possible for an individual to develop the talents which he possesses to their fullest ex- tent. The general statement of the West High educational policy follows: We, the teachers of the West High School, assert our belief in the inherent worth of the indi- vidual and our faith in the eliicacy, of education to develop citizens who are of value to the whole fabric of human society. We believe that the high- est virtue of a citizen is a pervading concept of social responsibility, which can be strengthened by thorough scholarship and understanding, rooted in the experience of the race. We believe further that each individual should be allowed to work out his own intellectual, social, and spiritual destiny within the framework of our democracy. During the past year many of our graduates and many of you have made significant contribu- tions to the life of the school or to the life of the community. We are always gratified when our boys and girls do well. We are glad for them, and at the same time have a feeling that we have had a small part in their successes. It has been a pleasure working with this class for the past three years. I feel that some of you have a great potential for leadership and that others among you have a good potential for eihcient followership. All in all, you have the essentials needed for a fine democracy. Do not coast on your Jars now that you have finished high school, but realize that if is only the commencement-a begin- ning of your life work. Remember that anything worth doing is worth doing well. Dutton Senior Christmas Memories Are We've got . . . steam heat! Football Half-time First Semester Senior year for the class of '57-a year of fad and fancy, fatigue and frustration, fun and friends. Nine- teen fifty-seven was a year that memory will not ignore. First And of the year was a mock political con- vention. A Coupon Book was nominated for President of class activities. Banners were waved, there was cheering and yelling, and Mr. Book's supporters marched through the aisles. Memories of summer political conventions were not far into the background, when the student body voted in a mock election. Incumbent President Eisenhower was the overwhelming victor! You Can't Take It With Youl' by Hart and Kauf- man was chosen for the fall play. This hilarious comedy had the audience laughing all night. No resume of the year 1957 could be complete without a mention of Elvis Presley, and Ivy Leaguen style clothes. How many dozens of locker doors had pictures of that side-burned, rock n' roll singer? These fads certainly took the fancy of the class of '57. Senior dress-up day preceded the Senior class party, Sleighbells of Snow. With the girls in their new evening dresses and high heels, and the boys in full dress suits, it was suddenly very -easy to realize that these teen-agers were Well on the road to maturity, and adulthood. The beauty of the traditional Christ- mas aud, and the Choir caroling in the halls, will be memories cherished in the hearts of many of the class of l57. The Winter concert closed the activi- ties in the First semester, Final exams, frustrating though they Were, meant that their last high school year was half over. Did she kill the school spirit? Pep Aud M. Archer, I. Frederick, K. Matthews, B. Ru- bin, K. Kcliher, L. Morton, E. Wheeler, M. Church. Made of This A time of religious beauty and quietude. Choir's Christmas Program Second Semester State tournament! Pandemonium reigned, as a wild. loyal West cheering section boosted their team on to a second place victory. After two months of laborious preparation by cast, chorus, and stage crew, Naughty Marietta , the bi- annual operetta. received applause and praise. Measuring for caps and gowns, and the writing of class night skits made the seniors realize that gradua- tion was fast approaching. Twirp Twirl ended the Twirp season in a circus atmosphere. The West Relays, Spring Concert, and the publi- cation of Patterns in Print , signified that the end of the year was near. Awards Day and the Nat'ional Honor Society induc- tion gave credit to those students who had served and honored their school by hard work in extra-curricular activities, and by obtaining high grades. The junior class, by custom, entertained the seniors at Grad Dance. Senior Banquet and Class Night with its zany skits and the party at the Club Chanticleer ended the high school careers of the class of '57. Emotions were high as yearbooks were signed, and caps and gowns were donned for graduation. The solemnity and beauty of graduation will never be forgotten, the friends and experiences of the past three years will remain forever as warm memories in the hearts of all. Junior Class Iunior Class members displayed their float-abilityi' at Homecoming again this year by canning their rivals, the Sophomores and Seniors, and sending them to the dogs. Pitching in and doing a good deal of the work on clubs and committees, the Iuniors knew that next year they would be the editors, presidents and chairmen of various activities. Some forty juniors waited anxiously to find out which four of them would be American Field Service candidates. The chosen four waited anxiously to see who would have the privilege of obtaining shots and passports. When tournament time rolled around and West had made it, a few Juniors showed their admiration of lim Rasmussen by reverently placing a bouquet of pom-poms on his doorstep. The class party, CalypsoN, was postponed twice, but was Hnally squeezed in on May 3rd. Fortified with slogans, skits, and songs, candidates for Student Senate oflices tried to assure their election. Working on Grad Dance the Juniors asked themselves if the decorations would EVER he done and if the Seniors would REALLY appreciate it. fThey didlj They viewed Class Night and graduation and suddenly realized, Hey, next year that will be us! They refer L0 themselves as the Class of '59, and have trained their stomachs to wait for the late 12:15 lunch period. They have even be- come accustomed to having juniors and seniors cluttering up study hall. They discovered some disheartening facts when they were eagerly trying to join all the clubs they could. Pep Club wants only juniors and seniorsg Stage Crew wants good rccommendationsg and Spanish Club is for Spanish students only. The sophomores' recipe for victory at the homecoming football game was, Don't Let Y'EAST Rise! They danced an evening away with the cannibals and a Hre-hose snake at their class party, Rockin' In the Congo. The tense moments at the State Basketball tournment, their first real Christmas program, and the evenings spent making Kleenex flowers for May Dance are all re- minders of the past year. Many sophomores now realize why tears stream from the seniors at graduation as t'hey recall the good times of the three years gone by. H.R. 118 L. Allin. B. Breibe. L. Alt, L. Baroness. C. A CAPELLA CHOIR The 1957 West High A Capella Choir, under the direction of Miss Marian Huxtable, presented a varied and enjoyable singing program this year. The Christ'mas Concert was the Choir's first public performance, and it was sung before a crowded West auditorium, filled with congratulating vacationing West grads. The program began with the traditional file of the choir down the aisles of the darkened auditorium. Holding luminous candles, they softly hummed Adeste Fide1es . Continuing on stage, they sang I-lark, the Herald Angels Singf' and Christmas Introitf' which featured soprano soloists. The Girls' Triple Trio then sang Christ of the Snow,', and the Boys, Double Quar- tet followed With To Shepherds Fast Asleepf' The rest of the program consisted of Three Kings , 'AVVhat Strangers Are These? , and Christmas Day. Ioan Her- ried and Vicki Vauck accompanied with their harps for the presentation of Deo Gracias. Cantique de Noel was the last number sung by the choir alone. The audi- ence participated in singing Silent Night at the close of the concert. The annual Christmas pageant which is presented in the Capitol for the public, joined the choirs of West, East, and Central. Traditional Christmas Carols were sung and they had a beautiful spiritual effect as the blended voices echoed off the walls of the huge building. The Winter Concert was given on Ianuary 27, along with performances of the band and orchestra. The choir's numbers were Oh, Rejoice, Ye Christians Loudly, Choir croonin Christmas Carols S' G. Mcliurney, B. Rentschler, M. Beckwith, I. Waln, M. Amphlett, M. Freed, M. Church. Straighten ties, button gown, finish jokes, we're on in lk minutes! D. Thompson, D. Hutchins, F. I-lasler, B. The religious Emmitte Spirituum Timm opened the program, followed by Soon Ah Will Be Done, a Negro spiritual, and Now is the Month of Mayi'ng. Triple Trio sang My Heart and Lute. The choir closed the program with A'Great Dayl' and Song of Victoryf' The traditional Emrnitte Spirituumn provided an appropriate background for the National Honor Society induction ceremony, held in t'he late spring. Currie, D. Yates Hustle Russell R. Russell WEST 20 - CENTRAL 7 West exploded for three long touchdown bursts to whip Central 20-7 in a non-conference, season-opening game. Two long runs by Ron Russell and a 44 yard pass play from Iim Bakken to Don Quarn were the determining factors in the Regents' victory. A 63 yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the first half and a 62 yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half were Ron Russell's contributions to the victory. Iim Bakken converted on the First two extra point attempts but missed on the third try. WEST 7 - KENOSI-IA 26 The Regents lost their Hrst conference game to QOXV- erful Kenosha, the eventual champion, at Breese Stevens field, 26-7. ln a game much closer than the score indicated, the Regents displayed unexpected poise as they kept up with the rugged visitors. West was handicapped both by having regular quarterback Iim Bakken only for conver- sions and by the leg injury to halfback lim Currie. Dick Yates went seven yards early in the second half for the Regents' only touchdown. Better Punt I. Bakken, I. Fox, R. Russell WEST 9 - PARK 0 The first game of the season away from home was successful as West defeated Racine Park 9-0. A safety, a touchdown, and an extra point accounted for the game's scoring. Tackle Phil Parker blocked a punt at- tempt in the end zone for West's first two points. Then West covered 34 yards in 8 plays, culminating in a two yard plunge by Gary Corbett. lim Bakken converted for the Hnal tally. The Regents failed on many fine scoring opportunities as they lost the ball Hve times on fumbles inside the Racine 50 yard line. WEST 47 - BELOIT 7 West displayed its greatest power shown of the season piling up 47 points in the first half and then coasting to a 47-7 win over Beloit. Dick Yates was the Regents' high scorer with three touchdowns of 48, 28, and l yards. The other West scorers were Ron Russell, on a l7 yard run off tackle, Iim Currie, on a l7 yard pass play, and Don Ouam, after a short Pass. running 35 yards for the scoreg Gary Corbett scored the hnal Regent points with a seven yard smash. Iirn Bakken converted after Hve of the touchdowns. Get away, Gary G. Corbett WEST 35 - HORLICK 19 The raging Regents knocked Racine Horlick from the ranks of the undefeated and into a tie for second place with a 35-19 win at Breese Stevens Field. The game was featured by long scoring plays for both teams. All of Racine's scores were on long gains, and all but one of West's touchdowns were on long plays. The first touchdown of the game came on a 37 yard pass from Iim Bakken to Don Quam. Other Regent scorers were Iim Currie, with runs of 22 and one yardsg Ron Russell, on a run of 55 yardsg and lim Bakken, with a 38 yard run and live conversions. WEST 29 - CENTRAL 19 West kept on the heels of front running Kenosha by tripping Madison Central 29-19 in a surprisingly close and hard-fought conflict. The crippled Downtowners gave their West-side opponents a rugged fight and matched the Regents touchdown for touchdown in the Hrst half. Don Quam and lim Currie scored two touch- downs apiece, leading the Regents to victory. The first two West touchdowns were made on passes from Iim Bakken to Don Quam. Currie scored his touchdowns on line runs of six and four yards. The Regents scored two points on a safety. Bakken converted three times. WEST 27 - IANESVILLE 6 A The Regents clinched second place in the Big Eight with an easy 27-6 victory over lowly Ianesville. The whole West traveling squad saw action as the Regents scored in every period. West's four touchdowns were made by Dick Yates, Ron Russell, and Jim Currie, who scored two. The First touchdown was scored on a 56 yard sprint by Yates. The only score of the second quar- ter was on a one yard smash by Russell. Currie's twelve points were scored by runs of six and ten yards apiece. lim Bakken continued his Fine place kicking as he made three out of four attempts. WEST 20 - EAST 26 East ruined West's homecoming as they upset the Regents 26-20 in the Hnal game of the 1956 season. This game was extremely close throughout. West held a 20- 19 lead until late in the Hnal period, after coming back from a 19-7 clelicit at halftime. The Regents lost the chance to retire the traveling city trophy as they lost the ball game. The trophy, which has been traveling since 1937, will be retired when one team wins the city cham- pionship three years in a row. Regent scorers were Ray Denson, Ron Russell, and Iim Bakken. Harriers Win City Crown I The West Cross-Country team won the city crown for the second year in a row. If the team wins the city next year, they will retain the traveling trophy. The co-captains for the year were Bob Bing and Rich Wilson, both out- standing runners for the last three years. The Harriers competed in eleven meets. The first four meets saw the Regents defeat Monona Grove, East, and Cent'ral, and bow to Ianesville. West placed third in the Invitationals, with Ianesville winning. West then ran in the Midwest at Ianesville. Later the Harriers swept the City Meet. The following week the Regents placed fourth in the Big Eight. The Regents finished up their season by placing high in the state meet. The largest Cross-Country squad ever out at West be- gan Coach Orville Evans' tenth season as Harrier coach. During those ten years Coach Evans had two state cham- pionships, the latest in 1955. The team was somewhat hampered by the loss of five of last year's state cham- pionship squad. Top performer of the year was junior, Tim Harring- ton, who had a very Hne season, running well all year. Tim finished up the season by placing third in the state meet at Hartford. Others running well for the Regents were seniors Bob Bing and Rich Wilson, juniors Roger Wiebe and Dave Gill, and sophomore Hugh Bell. The B team, composed of sophomores and juniors, proved to be one of the best in the state. They won most of the meets they competed in. The sophomores, for the third year in a row, walked off with the sophomore crown. With last year's championship sophomore and B teams moving up to fill varsity positions, Coach Evans' Harriers are looking forward to a Hne season in 1957. ' Ready-Set-Go C B. Bing, R. Wiebc, R. Rasmussen OUR OWN CHAMPS Shawano tops West 66-61 For State Title , the papers said, but the people of Madison had their own 'Kchampsf' the Regents from West High. West was not too highly regarded by most sports writers as the team entered the Regional and Sectional c'lashes. Even after West reached the State Tournament few people expected much from the Regents. No one, that is, except the loyal West High rooters. Those experts should have been forewarned of things to come after West's stunning 62-52 win over Ianesville's Big Eight champs. The victory over Ianes- ville was the high spot of a very successful conference season that saw the Regents gain second place in t'he tough Big Eight. West beat every team in the league at least once except Kenosha which took an early season game 73-60 and an overtime game later in the season 76-73. The two scoring highs of the season were 80-68 and 82-42 wins over Edgerton and Central. Throughout most of the season the Regents were paced by six men: Iim Rasmussen, Iim I-Iorney, Don Quam, Iohn Braun, Iim Bakken and Tom Brunette. Later in the year and down the tournament trail the Regents were known as the five Iron Men who played almost continuously except for brief periods. They were Horney, Quam, Rasmussen, Braun and Bakken. According to the experts the Regents were psy- chologically ready for the tournaments after a shocking loss to Racine Park following their triumph over lanes- ville. For once the experts were right. The Regents were sufficiently steamed-up as they cut down all tour- nament foes until they met defending state champion Shawano. In the Middleton Regional Tournament West won all three games easily. They first defeated Portage 69-54 quite handily and then took the second game from Mid- dleton iust as easily, 64-54. The championship of the regional tournament was Won over a tough Reedsburg teamg a game that Coach Don Page called one of the season's highlights. VVest mowed down undefeated Patch Grove and Ran- dolph to clinch a berth in the state tournament with- out much trouble. In the state, the Regents knocked off Milwaukee North before coming to the emotional highlight of the season-the thrilling one point yvin over Fort Atkinson. Behind by twelve points at half-time, West went ahead with but 13 seconds remaining and held t'he lead to reach the final game with Shawano. FOUR LAKES AND REGIONNAIRES Row 1: I. Miller, B. All seven of the matches the wrestlers dropped could have gone the other way if West had had one more individual victory. Coach Hable felt the best performance of the season was the Big Eight meet where the grapplers took third place. Dave Neal and Manfred Iankow- ski took titles of 167 and 130 pounds, respectively, while Steve Martin took second at 114 pounds. The Regents took third in the First Annual City meet and copped fourth in the Sectionals held at Beloit. At the sectionals, Dave Neal and Manfred Iankowski qualified for the State meet. RIEMAN RINK TOPS AT WEST Hard sweeping and close calls were the ear- marks of the curling squad this year. However, the returning rinks from the previous year weren't quite able to bring home the big prize. At Wausau, the four boys on the Gary Rieman rink were stopped in the semi-finals. But they Finished strong at the' Madison Invitational, and took. second event honors. Again, stiff competition was the undoing of the Fritz Kubly rink in the finals of the second event at Portage. In the city round robin tournament, in which 13 teams participated, the Rieman rink tied for second place with a 9-3 record. Ela's rink took fifth with an 8-3 score. The Kubly and Gill rinks placed sev- enth and eighth, respectively, while the three sophomore rinks skipped by Shipe, Mickow, and Panek finished last in that order. 'L.laxn PUCKMEN WIN SOUTHERN STATE TITLE West's 1956-57 hockey team, under new coach, Don Mc- Closkey, compiled a line seven and one record as they took the City Championship. The Regent puckmen opened the season by nipping Central in the Hnal minute of play, 8-7. They then gained ,, two more Cities Series victories by downing East, 6-3 and 4-2. lnvading the Wisconsin Valley Conference, the Hockey Team sneaked past Stevens Point with a 4-3 victory, but then returned home where it suffered its first loss of the season, losing to East, 2-1. That Gangway cane, weekend West overcame a stubborn Wausau six as they D' Pctcrsonfi-gwmvyer beat the Lumberjacks in an overtime, 3-2. The Regents then ended the City Series by whipping Central in two games, 5-2 and 5-4. Graduating players are Co-Captains, Tom I-Iammill and Andy Herriottg Bob Hillner, I-Iank Ellis, Kent Mon- tague, and Randy Conners. How-ever, the future looks bright because there are eight returning veterans. They include juniors George Oosterhaus-wing, Ierry Wittwer Schwenker-defense, Iohn Lorrimer-goalie, Bill Butch- er-wing, and sophomore Bob Hilliard-center and wing. Coach McCloskey is looking forward to next year for he is expecting several new hockey teams to be started in Southern Wisconsin. -wing, Iim Fowler-center, Eric Wedell-defense, Iim E And away they go! COACH IONES LOOKS FOR IMPROVEMENT As Coach Iones reviewed the still young 1957 track season and glanced at the schedule he said that he felt the highlights of the season came early in the year. The team started out the season with Hying colors, taking first place in the 640 yard state high school relay. Boys running on that team were Rich Wilson, Bob Glass, George Oosterhaus and Ron Russell. High point number two was the West Relays, the cindermen took fourth place in this rugged track classic. Leading the team was the sprint medley team which took first place in the meet. Sophomore Iohn Fox also starred for the Regents, taking a second place in the shot put. Looking to the future meets, the track mentor said that the 880 yard relayteam had the best chance to do Well in future competition. As for the city meet which the Regents have won since 1950, Mr. Iones said that he hoped they could take it again. Willing NVorkcrs D. O'Connor, I. Reynolds, Coach Willis Iones, D. Peterson, B. REGENTS COP FIRST THREE GAMES Coach Russ Paugh's 1957 Regent baseball team has high hopes of taking the Big Eight title and is rated by many txperts as one of the teams to beat. Ranked with West as some of the better conference teams are Kenosha, Beloit and Ianesville. As Westward Ho is printed in early May, we are limited to review only the Hrst five ball games, three conference and two non-conference clashes. The Regents started the season fast by getting three quick victories. The first one was at home and over Mazomanie, 4-2. This was a game in which pitchers Iohn Braun and Iim Wiebe allowed Mazomanie only three hits. West then played host to Belleville and tram- pled them by a 5-1 score. In the first Big Eight game of the year the baseball team blasted East, 7-2. The Regents were shut out in their second Big Eight game by Kenosha. In the 6-0 contest Gordie Kraut got t'he only base hit, a single, off the Kenosha pitcher. During spring vacation the East Purgolders crushed West, 16-4g a contest which saw West pitchers allow fourteen walks. The starting team is built around twelve boys. Return- ing lettermen are lim Fowler, Iohn Braun, Iim Horney, George Oosterhaus, Iirn Bakken and Ray Densen. The other starters are lim Wiebe, Ron Haessig, Howie Lip- pincott, Paul Hathaway, Gordie Kraut, Iim Olson. IN THE SPRING YOUNG MEN TURN TO THOUGHTS OF . . . BASEBALL It's a bird. T. With Don Quam and Don Christen- son, lettermen and number one and two men from last year's state championship team, and Dennis Pearson, a junior letterman, plus seven other equally fine golfers on the squad, the team should Hnish with a good record. The team got off to a slow start by dropping the Beloit Quadrangular. But it came through to win the lanes- ville Quadrangular the next week. This was followed up lay defeating Wisconsin High 15M to 122 with Don Christenson taking medalist honors with a one over par 73. On May 4, the team is angling to avenge its Hrst de- feat when it plays Beloit in a return match. W'ith a team with more potential than last year's state cham- pionship team, West is predicted to retain the champion- ship on May 31 and Iune 1. D. Quam STRONG TENNIS TEAM EXPECTED As the 1957 tennis season opened, the Regents looked like one of the strongest teams in the state. Coach Don Page stated that he hoped the netmen would capture both the city and the Big Eight championships. He ex- pected the team to finish as high or higher than the basketball team in the state meet. With live regulars returning from last year, Lon Ruedisili, Iohn Walsh, Bob Rodenfels, Bill Lewis and Stuart Gordon, the Regents got off to a strong start beat- ing Wisconsin High twice, whipping East and Central in dual meets, and winning in a quadrangular over East, Central and Ianesville. Ahead of the Regents are six dual meets, the city meet, Big Eight meet, sectional, and Finally the state meet from May 31 through Iune 1. Row 1: I. Schwcnkcr, I. McLeod, D. Thompsc-n, P. Mcrmin, T. Margo, knocking down the most pins during the season, was named BASKETBALL Seventy-two girls participated in this year's G.A.A. basketball season which extended from December 4 through February 12. Symptoms of tournament fevern were first visible at West when Coach Page, in a pre-regional pep aud, vowed that his boys could and would go all the wayf, The fever mounted after three exciting games with Portage, Middleton, and a tough, rugged Reedsburg team. One week later, at Wisconsin Dells, West High proved that it had the coach, team, pep and steam to trounce Patch Grove and battle its way into the state tourna- ment by beating Randolph. Tournament fever began when paper crowns were made, and worn at school as well as the tournament. Back your team! buttons and posters were pinned and hung. Banners were drawn, cars were painted. Tour- nament fever' was at its highest pitch. Paper crowns were made, and worn atschool as well Basket, Basket, Basket Boys! You make the baskets. We,ll make the noise! as the tournament. Back your team! buttons and post- ers were pinned and hung. Banners were drawn, cars were painted. 'ATournament fever was at its highest pitch. The Regents won the first game against Milwaukee North, and braced themselves for the biggest battle-that of beating the number one rated team, undefeated Fort Atkinson. Although West lost to a very strong Shawano team by Hve points, it should be remembered that West High scored one more field goal than the opposition, and that they had played the entire third quarter wit'hout their starting center. In many Ways, that second place trophy meant more to the team and the student body behind that team than any championship ever meant to anyone, no matter how hard it had been fought for. l We Want another one, just like the other ones.
