THERE'S MUSIC IN THE AIR: Choir, orchestra, and band combine to present the winter concert on Ianuary ZS in the aud. Hold out your arm. There it didn't hurt. Sound familiar? Uh-huh, T. B. tests. The American Male Chorus sings for West and the Speech Classes present a play for us-- Murder by Morning -How funny can you be? Highlight of the year starts March 15 when West enters the State Basketball tournament. School ceased at 1:40 for teachers and view students to dash to the field house, team is second to Rapids, but always first to us. School closed for a damp week of spring vacation on Good Friday, March 23. April 6, Delores Trotalli is crowned track queen, with Lois Bakken and Carol Forsberg as at- tendants, to reign over the West Relays on Saturday, April 7, and cheer our team on to first place. Now the halls begin to echo various snatchcs of Gilbert and Sullivan, and out of all the madness comes a fine production of Pirates of Penzancef' April 12 and 14. Posters and clowns announce the Yearbook carnival that is held Saturday, April 21. The hall are con- verted into midways. Clowns, barkers, and booths create that incomparable circus feeling. Slight depres- sion of spirits on April 30-exams again. But next- Moonlight Magic-May Dance, that is, and our own this year. Ed Gesteland and Shirley Lewis ascend a xelvet and star-covered throne. Friday, May 11, thir- teen seniors received honors for their outstanding scholarship during their three years in senior high, and on May 17, twenty-five seniors and twelve juniors are inducted into National Honor Society. It's almost over now-but the best is yet to come. The Spring Concert on May 25, Grad Dance Qwe don'r even have to paylj on Iune 9, right after the Senior Banquet, held at 51 Rue de la Paix, the long-awaited and worked on Class Night, and then the big day itself-Friday, Iune 15, 1951. There will never be another like it or anything quite like this year again-we will never be so young again, nor so quick to friendship and to laughter-. These are the things we will remember with the greatest joy. cyl 4- xy K stmons, Q W zu A 5 ball HR Vice-Prcs. 4 JO , The .S'enio1':' rho cc. Hillis 30 To THE CLASS OF 1951 As I write this message the 1950-51 basketball season has just closed. The spirit of the student body, the band, and the cheerleaders was splendid. Never have I witnessed a greater desire to win, or as niuch raw courage as that exhibited by our team. The operetta is in full production, the Hi-Times has won honors again, and so it goes. The activities mentioned above are but a few of those which we do together as a school. Working, living, playing, rejoicing and sorrowing together have made us a close-knit team. We have learned that best results are the result of hard Work and individual sacrifice. We should dedicate ourselves to the task of making our class exercises the finest ever held, and strive to make commencement the culmination to a happy and fruitful high school career. Your class has high ideals. Cling to them. Face difficulties as problems to be solved and do not be discouraged. lt is with regret that I see you leave, but I will have a treasure chest of memories to remember you by. Good luck. Bill Marshall scored the first touchdown in the first quarter. ln the second quarter Barry and DeLong both tallied six pointers. One extra point was good and the score at the half stood West l9- LaCrosse 0. The Regents continued to dominate play in the second half as Barry and Bill Mansfield both racked up markers to 'make the final score West 3l- LaCrosse 0. WEST vs. RACINE PARK The Regents led off their 1950 Big Eight campaign by beating Park l9 to 6. Bill Marshall started things by going over the middle for 2 yards and a touch- down. The extra point was good and West led 7-0. The next score was set up by a 43-yard pass from Clapp to lack Mansfield which was carried to the Park three. Mansfield then circled his right end for the score. The Regents, last touchdown came on an l8-yard run by Barry. Park's only counter came in the fourth quarter on a 48-yard pass play, but it was not enough and the game ended West l9-Racine Park 6. WEST vs. MADISON CENTRAL The Regents continued to win by dropping Central 22 to 6 in the city series opener for both teams. Westis first 7 points came in the second quarter on a 5-yard run by Barry and Holtis successful conversion. The Maize and Blue tallied again in the third period when lack Mansfield went over left tackle for 5? yards and a touchdown. The last 9 points came in a .hurry as Mansfield took the kickoff, following a Central safety, back 85 yards for the third Regent score. Holt again added the extra point and the final score stood West 22-Central 6. WEST vs. BELOIT The West NComeback Kidsw stayed atop the Big Eight by trouncing Beloit. End Bernard Chortek scored by intercepting a Beloit pass and going 29 yards to tally. Niehus scored by falling on a bad pass from center behind the Beloit goal. Fine defensive play by the West line highlighted the game. VVest scored twice in the first half on runs by Barry. Holt booted the extra point after every touchdown to make the final score West 28-Beloit 6. WEST vs. HORLICK Spurred on by lovely Queen Pat O'Brien and her attendants, Lois Bakken and Pat Iefferson, the Re- gents downed Racine Horlick 25 to 19 for West's first Homecoming victory in three years. The first Regent tally came when Barry went 30 yards around his right end to score. Shortly after this, Fiedler threv. a left-handed pass to Craig in the end Zone for a second 6 points. Holt made the extra point to give the Regents a l3 to 6 half-time lead. The second half had just begun when Horlick recovered a fumble deep in West territory. lt took the Malted Milk boys just seven plays to push over a T.D. The Ionesmen, how- ever, were not to be denied a homecoming victory. Barry again brought the crowd to its feet as he raced 85 yards for the third marker. Sorenson put the game on ice for the Regents when -he drove over left guard for the final VVest score. Horlick completed the scoring in the last four seconds with a 45-yard des- peration pass that made the final score West 25- Horlick l9. NOW WHERE? GOT HIM! PARDON ME! WEST vs. IANESVILLE The Comeback Kidsn from Madison West re- mained in the thick of the championship race with their fifth straight conference victory. Ianesville took the opening kickoff and scoring without giving up the ball. Their lead was short lived, however, as the Regents moved downfield with the following kickoff. Barry went the last 7 yards for the score. Holt added his first of four successful conversions and the Re-- gents went ahead 7 to 6. Barry made a second T.D. to capitalize a 56-yard Maize and Blue march. Ianesville fought back and just before the half ended connected on a 50-yard pass play for their last score, Fiedler and Barry closed the door on Ianesville in the second half when they both scored 6 pointers. The final score stood West 28-Ianesville 12. WEST vs. EAST The fighting spirit of the Comeback Kidsn was not enough to halt the East Purgolders. East's power and weight ground out two first half touchdowns. ln the second half East recovered a fumble on the VVest 4- yard line. Three plays later, a third 6 points was on the books for the Eastsiders. The Regents finally got underway in the fourth quarter moving from their own 7 all the way to score, The educated toe of Holt added the extra point. It was too little and too late. The Maize and Blue dropped their first of the year. The score was East 20-West 7. WEST vs. KENOSHA The red hurricane of Kenosha roared into Madison and roared right on through. The Red Devils com- pletely outclassed the Regents, amassing 45 points in the second half alone. The only glimmer of Maize and Blue in the red torrent was a 95-yard kickoff run-back by lack Mansfield. The Ionesmen gave it all they had but it was not nearly enough as Kenosha waltzed to their eighth straight victory and the Big Eight championship. The score at the end was Ken- osha 57-West 7. SOPHOMORES The Sophomore X's completed their schedule bv heating Central 53-7 at NVest and winning the citv championship in the Moncna League. The X's Ein- ished their season with a record of 5 wins and 1 tie. Don Adams, a transfer from Aurora, Illinois, Bill Mallatt, and, Larry Bernstein did the heavy job of running for the X's, while Bob Niehus, Larry Sliffe and Mike Murphy held up the front line and made it tough to gain on the X's. The Xis had a well bal- anced and powerful squad without an apparent weakness. All through the season the Sophomores played fine ball and displayed a determination to win. The spirit of the squad was excellent and a credit to the 4-Lakes League. IUNIORS The Iunior Four Lakes Football Team, the Dodg- ers, didnit fare too well in the Mendota League in tying for third with the West Bears. The high point of the season was a 6 to Z defeat of the Bears in their last game of the season. Their lone touchdown came on a long pass from Don Hahn to Tom Ragatz. Glen Long and Don Hahn were the mainstays of the back- field while Dick Chapman, Phil Green and Tam Ra- gatz were the bulwarks of the line. Coach Antonie was well satisfied with the season and the way the team worked. SENIORS The Senior 4-Lakes team was unable to win another game after they won their first game from the West Iuniors. The Seniors wound up their season in third place in the Mendota League with a record of one win, tour losses and a tie. The tie was a scoreless game with the East Iuniors. The hard charging Roger Senty and the fine line play of George Ingwell and Buzz Ely highlighted the Seniors' play. The Sen- iors were weakened during the season when several key men were moved up to the Varsity. Nevertheless the Bears gave every team they played a battle and their season was a better one than the record would indicate. Botiom Row: L. Slirfe, W. Sorensen, T. Miller, M. Murphy, F. Rogc-1'S, L. The top twenty-four bowlers out of a field of one hundred and twenty-five girls were asked to participate in the event. The girls were divided equally, as to their skill. into four teams, and then followed a playoff determin- ing the best team. Preceding this tournament the regular bowling season was held. The largest amount of girls ever to turn out for this sport appeared on Tuesday and Thursday nights after school. The team with the highest scoring average was co-captained by Nancy Lee and Nancy Beggs. Outstanding bowlers produced this season were Ianet DeLong, Rita Murray, Ianice VVallace, Darlene Peterson, Sue Giese, and Ellen Stevens all of whom bowled over 118. A fine turnout for basketball provided some thrill- ing games during this season, which was climaxed by the run for the championship. The top team was the Iunior Drooling Dribblers, who won the Intramural Basketball Championship by defeating the Sophomore team, the Doodle Bugs. In the runner-up playoffs the Senior Make-Outs won a decisive victory over the Iunior Fair Set to cop consolation honors. The call for volleyball season brought out ninety- five girls who divided up into ten teams. A clear title for the championship was won by Rhodzfs Rowdies who lost only one game. The girls who played on the championship team were, Iudy Fergen. Sally Williamson, Iune Tucker, Sue Gordon, Betty Newton, and their captain Rhoda Smith. The nevt team in line for the coveted honors was the Court Cows who were lead by Nancy Emmons. Members of this team were Carol Tygum, Pat McKenna, Sue Gicse, Darlene Paulson, Nancy Herrick, Barbara Ricksham, Nancy Dohr, Gwenn Wilson, Nancy Beggs, and Karen Christoffersen. Not just the girls that played on the top two teams were the only excellent players, in addition were a few others such as, Betsy Griem, Bobbie King, Susan Lange. Lucy Roberts, and Cynthia Rhodes. Part of the credit for a very successful Girls' Sports season rests with the newly formed Officials' Club. This club is composed of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are awarded points based on the DUI!!- ber of games at which they have refereed, umpired. or kept score. Another purpose of the club is to help run off the events more smoothly and efficiently. A Spfdfzflllizz' Spike ,llr5. SIr'z'f'l1.f .llighfy Sl'I1i0l',x' Q Hallam Rum: L. Johnson. C. J. D J.
